This is a little of out the blue, and yes, another movie idea thread... but I recently/randomly had what I think could be a potentially interesting idea for an "original" Star Wars movie, one I haven't been able to stop thinking about for a couple of weeks now. It wouldn't be for a big saga movie or even a spinoff, it'd be something a little smaller, something a little different - like a one-off movie that could play on Disney+. And if it's worth pursuing, I might even try to write it on spec, in the background, while I work on other things, as I think it'd be a fun exercise, if not something I could have handy should the opportunity ever arise. At the very least, an outline/pitch deck would be the base-level aim.

That said, I'll of course be doing my own research, but it'd help immensely if I had some places to start or resources I might not otherwise find on my own, considering how many insanely knowledgeable Star Wars fans post on this board.

So here's what I'm looking for...

I need to read everything I can about the Force.

Any resources that point to how it works, what we know about it, what we don't know, the dark side, the light side, Lucas' thoughts on it, etc. Then, based on what I read, if this idea is even plausible - which I think it is regardless - and before I break it down here (if I break it down here), I just need to do some basic research first, as I'd want to (potentially) present it with a little more ammo. So, any online resources, books, excerpts, etc, I'm just trying to see how this idea might work (or not) in terms of what is currently known and/or universally accepted, re: the nature/"science" of the Force.

Thanks!

The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.

I just starting doing some very preliminary research, and the basic dilemma/concept I've come up with *has* been discussed a bit here and there in a couple of corners of the online Star Wars community, but it's encouraging in that what little discussion/debate I'm seeing about it is playing right into why I think it could make for such a compelling story. In other words, this gets me even more excited...

Not to be an a*hole (like usual) and believe me I would love to waste 2 days writing everything I've ever read about the Force, but my current workload forbids it. I would suggest hitting up the legends part of the EU on Wookiepedia and going piece by piece seeing what is said. That's a ****load of work, but that's how you can best see what's been covered and what hasn't.

I was hoping that Rian Johnson or D&D's now dead movies would be "The First Jedi" and show who the first Jedi were, how the first lightsabers were made, building the first temple on Ach-to, etc. Interested in what TC's idea is.

No worries. That's a great resource and good strategy. The more I'm reading, though, the more I'm seeing that the research doesn't need to be that extensive. I just need the basic tenets and that's about it. I'm busy as well, so it might be a while before I can really explain and break down the idea, but will try to when I can.

I think there are a couple of books "written" by Luke and by Sheev that explain it in a lot of detail. The Luke book is probably out right now, we talked about it here a couple of mnths ago.

Tomorrow I have to get back to real work, but I gave myself the day to do a little research on this idea, and I think I've at least got the bare bones premise and potentially even the time period figured out (though that might change). There's still a ton to do before I even attempt to run it by you guys, but man, I have to say, I think I might actually be on to something. At least something that interests me, personally, enough to pursue.

In the meantime, though, I have a new question...

Outside of Episode III, are there any books, Clone Wars episodes, etc that dive further into / expand on Order 66?

This idea can technically take place at any time in the relatively modern Star Wars age - again, it's not really tied to any specific events, lore, or prominent characters - but setting it just before Order 66 (with Order 66 serving as the climax) might be the way to go. If so, I think act one would be on Coruscant, but if there are any further details on a potential planet (or two) where I could set the rest of the story after that point - one that was affected by Order 66 - that information could potentially help. I can probably just invent a planet/situation that was affected by Order 66, and that might honestly be best, but before I go that route I wanted to see what's out there currently in terms of canon.

Several times in the Star Wars movies the words describing the force have been, "a energy field that binds all living things together" or something to that extent....

So if it deals with all living things in the universe....as the number of living things grows....does the power of the force grow with those that are sensitive to it as the number of living things throughout the universe grows?????

The Star Wars video games might be a good reference for force powers. For example, you can find all the powers you can use in one of the most popular games, Knights of the Old Republic, in this walkthrough. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/xbox/556553-star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic/faqs/25029
You can find a ton of gameplay videos online for visual reference.

I think just the last season of the Clone Wars cartoon features Order 66, so you wouldn't have to fully commit to that show if you don't want to. However, it's really good and I suggest the whole thing.

The most recent game that came out, Star Wars: The Fallen Order, features a Padawan who escapes Order 66 and goes into hiding. You can find most of the gameplay online.

I always thought the force was a 6th sense that certain people could tap into like ESP and telekinesis.

I've often wondered if there's a limited amount of dark and light side force power in the galaxy at any one time, and so as Luke shut himself off, Rey became the only light side user and thus became way more powerful than she normally would've been.

Although that wouldn't quite square up with how midichlorians work. TC, what's your position on midichlorians as far as this script?

they're cannon so they have to be a factor

However, midichlorians only deal with force sensitivity. Not necessarily knowledge or power.

Some Order 66 stuff:

Watch TCW Season 6, episodes 2 - 4. Side note, these were written by Katie Lucas.

There is a flashback sort of vignette in the novel Ahsoka that details what happened between Ahsoka and Rex during Order 66 at the siege of Mandalore. This was based on the unproduced story from TCW and will be undoubtedly be told in the upcoming season 7 on Disney+.

Midichlorians will definitely be mentioned, and factor in, but not just because they're canon. They actually play directly to the crux of the story, yet because of the nature of the core concept of the movie, they'll ultimately be dismissed somewhat as well. In other words, the concept checks the midichlorian box, but those who hate midichlorians (and who doesn't?) will be happy in the end.

Thanks, and bookmarked. Good to know.

And yeah, I'll probably stay away from Mandalore regardless.

Sweet, thanks. I'm less concerned with Force powers - though they'll definitely factor in - and more with the nature/science of the Force. Either way, I feel like I read enough today to know what I need to know to move forward a step. But that clip/game will come in handy for sure. Also, I can't believe how incredible some of that cutscene stuff looks.
