Season 4 is considered the best by many. If not best, second best to 3. This is a highly controversial opinion.

S4 was tolerable for me. I put it under 3 and 1.

Here are some prior threads on The Wire (including one started by me!). I really like reading through all of them.

S4 was..."the worst"..."tolerable"...WTF?

That's a top 2 season based on the scene of Michael slapping up Kenard alone.

I think the Wire used technology in a way that doesn't make it dated. It was never just about pagers, burners and text messages. They always used technology to make the point that criminals can stay one step ahead of cops because of bureaucracy.

I've said this before and I pump this show as much as I can because I truly believe its the best cop show ever created and lotsa people haven't seen it but if you like the Wire, you will like NYPD BLUE. It's not dated at all even thoughits a few years old. And yes, I believe its superior to The Wire. (My personal opinion) Especially the Jimmy Smits years.

Exactly. The way they used technology was in a disposable fashion -- so having expensive new high tech stuff wouldn't have actually made a ton of sense.

Saul and Walter White were using burner flip-phones 10 years later.

I may give it a shot. It was one of my Dad's favorites back in the day... It's just hard for me to fathom an old network cop show being gritty enough after the caliber of shows we saw the last 20 years.

Guess everyone kinda has their own definition of gritty. Is it Netflix or HBO gritty? No, probably not. Is it more realistic than some of the Netflix or HBO shows? Yes, absolutely.

Although Caruso was solid in that first season, power through him, and get to Smits and you will be binging.

As someone who has seen The Wire twice, and Blue 4 times through now (as of 2 days ago) my own personal opinion is that Blue is the superior cop show.

I agree NYPD Blue is worth a watch, for a network TV cop show it was solid. I've watched it a couple of time through over the years. The Smits era is definitely the high water mark for the show.

I am also finally getting through the series. I watched season 1 awhile back and have just gotten through season 4. I think Barksdale/Bell are more compelling bad guys vs Marlo & crew. Maybe because I think Snoop is horrible. I know she is basically playing herself (although I laugh at the enforcer bit), but she is terrible in a cloud of good acting and stories. I keep waiting for someone to snap her neck or at least take the gun away every time she puts it 6 inches from someone whose hands are right there.

Snoop isn't a great actress, but she's definitely authentic. She's from Baltimore, was a crack baby, and is a convicted drug felon and murderer.

And I agree Barksdale and Bell were better and more compelling, but Chris Partlow was a pretty scary dude.

Some of the bit actors were real street kids (Snoop for example).

Prop Joe is a Baltimore native that runs/teaches an acting/drama program.

Marlo was more menacing the second or third time I watched it through than he was the first. During the first one I couldn't get past the fact that he looks about 16. Stringer looked way older so it made sense that he'd be helping run a territory. Weebay looked old enough to be a top enforcer.

Marlo and his crew (with the exception of Chris) all looked like they were in HS.

I believe i read that the priest in the series was an ex-drug lord that had been convicted and served time.

I agree that NYPD Blue is a great, if not the greatest Cop drama.
However, I would submit that The Wire is not a cop show.

The Deacon is the real life character that Avon Barksdale was based on. He's the church guy that helps Bunny Colvin a few times, helps the ex con look for a job and eventually get the boxing gym, etc.

There's a BPD cop character on the show named Jay Landsman (played by a giant fat actor). The character is based on a real BPD cop named Jay Landsman who is also an actor on the show playing a minor role BPD cop not named Jay Lamdsman.

I thought the guy playing the preacher was the real life version of prop Joe, not real life avon barksdale but I dunno.

Order of best shows all time imo are:

1. The Wire
2. Breaking Bad
3. The Shield

I've been contemplating recently going back and watching The Shield in its entirety again. So great and I feel it doesn't get the credit it deserves. Or maybe it's just that a ton of people I know have never watched it.
