The fact that it's primarily non-"conservatives" tearing it down gives me hope that maybe the political humor may actually be innocuous and/or digestible.

Alan Sepinwall is the only reviewer I recognized and respect the opinion of, and he indicated it wasn't very good.

That said, comedy is about as subjective as it gets.

That's an interesting point. Go hard left, the critics might applaud but the country won't watch. Go innocuous, and the country might watch, provided the critics don't pan it.

In an odd analogy, it's kind of like Kanye West. He had already started to change his political tone by the time Ye came out, and I think that played a lot into how hard some of the critic publications reviewed it compared to his earlier albums. From Consequence of Sound on the idea of a political "grammy snub":

Quote:

Kanye's ye is hardly the best in his catalog, yet it's still surprising to see the Chicago rapper absent from literally every single category except for Producer of the Year (non-classical). Sure, he's managed to go his whole career without a Grammy in any of the major categories (only the rap and R&B ones), but one has to wonder whether the lack of even a nomination has to do partially with the MC's especially divisive nature in 2018.

Bottom line, it wouldn't surprise me at all for people to go into it looking for Trump slams and come away disappointed with the project as a whole if it's relatively middle of the road.

Alan has some good takes. He also likes shows I don't like and he also doesn't like shows I like.

I'll give Space Force a shot, but if I'm not into by episode 2 or 3, I will move on.

I just couldn't imagine having my enjoyment of a tv show or movie being ruined by political opinions.
This show very well could suck, but it won't be because they make fun of Trump (if they even do)

i don't care if anyone makes fun of trump or any other politician or public figure. i didn't vote for him and funny is funny. the problem is, it is seldom funny or unique at this point. twitter/social media is now basically a platform to attack trump/conservatives. same with network and cable news, same with newspapers, same with day time shows (which i don't watch), same with late night talk shows which seem to be more political commentary than entertainment at this point (also don't watch). even the commercials for those shows are full of political commentary.

for me, i don't take offense or care if people take political shots because i don't define myself in political terms. but it is hard not to notice all those jokes go only one way these days, they are usually mean-spirited (thus not very funny), recycled over and over, and used to beat the audience over the head with a certain ideology. it's everywhere you look, all day everyday.

to me it's all just...very boring and redundant.

This was my thought as well after watching the trailer. Sadly, it looks and sounds like Avenue 5 may be better than this show. And Avenue 5 was not good.

Weeds is one that comes to mind. It started in the middle of the Iraq war and early one there were comments/jokes about Bush which fit the context of the show. If it fits and is well written, it doesn't bother me.

It's when they started shoehorning Bush comments into situations that didn't make any sense other than to say something negative about Bush that it started to detract from the show.

I guess I am referring to how another poster put it. The mean-spirited vitriol of everyone makes it not funny, to me.

I never once minded the Clinton and Bush years on SNL. Those were some of the funniest sketches and always had me laughing. As a comedian, if you cannot find something ridiculous with every politician on the hill, then you really just have an agenda and it shows.

Again, I really don't care because I will just watch what I enjoy and go about my day.

I also agree with what's been posted about leftists ruining comedy. Dave Chappelle's latest special was so on point. Thank God South Park is still an equal opportunist insulting machine and doesn't care about political correctness.

I just really dislike the double-standard and wish it were different. We are normalizing 6'5'' dudes walking around in dresses and ostracize people who laugh at the absurdity in that, yet make fun of a new branch of the government that completely makes sense, to me. What a world we live in...

An organization charged with managing our satellites and monitoring threats? Consolidating the brain power and man power responsible for everything above our sky, and relieving the Air Force from double duty so they can focus on what they are best at?

You thought this was about setting up a star fleet type of program didn't you?

This is how I feel and I voted for Trump. I'll be the first to point out that he constantly says dumb **** and I wish my buddy who is a high up engineer with Twitter would delete that sucker. I didn't mind when people made fun of his comments.

But after nearly 5 years, its on every platform. Social media, news channels, sports channels. Every form of media seems to constantly have a thing going after him to the point that its so redundant.

i completely left out how even espn, a freaking sports network, is unwatchable now in large part due to politics.

i want to escape from that crap, not continue to bath in it from every outlet possible.

i miss the days when i absolutely loved keith olberman and would watch sportscenter re-runs every morning for 3 hours straight in the summers as a kid.

So you admit it is just pulling duties from other parts of the DoD? I thought it was the place where we make "super duper missiles" because that is a 100% accurate quote straight from POTUS (and making up a military branch is right out of 3rd world dictator 101, just like his desire for military parades on the first of may).

I very briefly met an officer who was moving into Space Force at a hotel bar. It came up that I didn't see much point or the big difference from the existing Air Force Space Command. He defended the Space Force with two sentences that were full of meaningless corporate buzz words like integrate, strategize, and consolidate. I don't remember exactly what he said because we were in a bar and I was too amused by his corporate buzz word speak. Even the military can't escape pointless corporate buzz words to explain their mission.

that does not surprise me. for the last 30-40 years, we've been steadily migrating jobs to bureaucracy management across all gov and business. so, in turn, entire industries have been created to teach people how to live within those bureaucracies. not thrive or innovate, just live.

Pretty sure there were folks in the 1940s who thought there was no need to separate the Army from the Army Air Corps.

I really don't have enough knowledge to know if this is a good idea or not.

Watched the first episode over lunch. It was... not good.

I wish after the very first scene the director would have pulled over Carell and simply asked him this.

The Space Force pretty much copied the Air Force Space Command logo in use since 1982, and the Air Force claims the vector logo was used in the context of space operations as early as 1961.

Watched episode 1. It was ok, nothing great. Will see if it gets better.
I figured with the subtle digs in the show that it would be polarizing here, but it's not anything that bad. Just wish the first episode was funnier.
Amazing cast though, even if some of them were one offs.

After one and three quarters of an episode, I am tapping out. This isn't completely devoid of comedy since I chuckled a couple of times, but it is just not good.

Carrell's character doesn't really make sense because hes the only one taking anything seriously. Carrell is funny when he is being absurd and this character just seems so out of place. That and whatever voice/accent he is going for is borderline unwatchable.

What is Space Force? I was expecting the Office/Parks and Rec documentary formula. Looks like it's trying to be a serious drama with a miscalculated bit of comedy sprinkled in.

It took a few episodes to understand the humor of the Office. Maybe Space Force is a slow burn that takes time to appreciate?
