This one comes to mind because it's so fresh, but John David Washington in Tenet. Oof he can not act and it killed that movie. I mean plenty other stuff made it not Nolan's best but he was really bad as the lead.

After the train wreck on the new trilogy, I have a weird soft spot for Hayden. But he was one of the most miscast of all time. Not intimidating at all. Never likable so you don't care about his fall.
Wonder who would have made a good Anakin looking back. Ledger and Leo were both interested in the role. I think Jake Gyllenhaal would have been great but he has really developed as an actor in the past 20 years.
The ginger priest in Gran Torino. That was some of the worst acting I've seen in a major studio movie.

Hughes doesn't do face-jock, athletic, prom king or queen heroes, he wants you to root for the little, different guy to win. Farmer Ted / Samantha, Annie / Duckie, Keith / Watts, Uncle Buck, Del Griffith, Brian Johnson, Gary and Wyatt.

Compare his casting to Alan Rickman or Maggie Smith. I mean, you basically name the adult actor in that film, and I would say it was perfectly cast. I give them a pass on Dumbledore because their original actor was great, and he passed away.
Also JK Rowling insisted in the casting of the movie that Harry and his mother have the same eye color.

i loved hostiles and i just couldn't get past him being magua the whole time.

I'd also like to submit Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce. Donald Sutherland was great in the movie role. Alda became this unlikeable know it all who always has to be right it seemed. It may be an unpopular opinion, but it's mine.

I think there are two types of "miscast" being discussed here. Those that don't fit what you view they should be from the book, Cruise and Ford. And those that don't come across correct based on the story presented. People that have never read Patriot Games or Jack Reacher don't feel the same way. I think Harrison is the best Jack Ryan because I like his acting in those.
Agree on that. I liked his acting just fine, but having read the books multiple times meant I went in with a pre-set notion of who Jack Ryan was. Harrison Ford was not that. Alec Baldwin actually fit the role far better.Baron Von Flag Smasher said:

You may not have liked what the character became 8 years into the role but that doesn't mean he was "miscast". Alda was phenomenal in that role.
