I can't believe nobody has mentioned Mark Wahlberg being cast as a Texan in both Lone Survivor and those Transformers movies.

I think there are two types of "miscast" being discussed here. Those that don't fit what you view they should be from the book, Cruise and Ford. And those that don't come across correct based on the story presented. People that have never read Patriot Games or Jack Reacher don't feel the same way. I think Harrison is the best Jack Ryan because I like his acting in those.
I don't disagree. Jack Nicholson is nothing like the book version of Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest, but I wouldn't call that a miscast role because he made it his own. On the other hand, Tom Cruise is almost laughable as Jack Reacher. He doesn't have the frame or power to pull that off - it would be like casting him as the Mountain in Game of Thrones.

The Duke as Ghengis Khan is a good call.

I'd also like to submit Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce. Donald Sutherland was great in the movie role. Alda became this unlikeable know it all who always has to be right it seemed. It may be an unpopular opinion, but it's mine.

You may not have liked what the character became 8 years into the role but that doesn't mean he was "miscast". Alda was phenomenal in that role.
It's just my opinion. And yes, I do think he was miscast (even though Alda did redefine and turn the character into his own). The Hawkeye of the books was a jock. He didn't try to impart his holier than thou social morality on everyone around him. I think that was very much Alda's views that he brought to the character. It became overbearing. I readily admit it's one of the greatest sitcoms, and still enjoy watching episodes. Who knows what it would have been like without Alda as Hawkeye. Not sure who else during that timeframe could have played the part. Maybe Christopher Lloyd could have pulled it off. Or really stepping out there, a young Tom Selleck (27 in 1972). Hawkeye was 28 in the books.

That's why I immediately dismissed that new Michael B Jordan movie. The trailer shows his commander as a female Navy SEAL (who also happens to be black). Too woke and ridiculous for my taste.

Russell Crowe - Les Mis

Add hugh Jackman.

Their singing was terrible...but because they are A list...

However Hathaway killed singing I dreamed a dream as Fantine. Tangential I hated Uma Thurman in the nonmusical version with liam Neeson and Geoffrey rush.

I would add Uma to the list of miscasts.
Russell Crowe was an actor trying to sing, and was out of his depth yes.

Hugh Jackman performs on Broadway, and was not terrible.

Don't know if it's been posted....but child actor who played Anikan in Phantom Menace....not sure how much was Lucas' fault with the script but he sticks out in that film

That's a special category, child and young adult miscast. I didn't really find the old adult dying scene very convincing in ROTJ, so can we say Anakin gets the trifecta?!?!

Better than Keaton.
Keaton did a much better job than I was expecting, for what it's worth.

Bale is still the best one so far. (Affleck was a better Bruce Wayne, but not Batman).

Agree on that. I liked his acting just fine, but having read the books multiple times meant I went in with a pre-set notion of who Jack Ryan was. Harrison Ford was not that. Alec Baldwin actually fit the role far better.
And Michael B. Jordan absolutely does NOT fit John Clark. But Willem Dafoe didn't either.

Quite true. Maybe the guy who portrayed Clark in The Sum of All Fears, but I don't recall much from that movie.

On a similar note, Anthony Hopkins as Don Diego de la Vega. Nothing Spanish about him.

Everytime HJ sang the word "Javert" I wanted to ice pick my ears. I dont care if he is on Broadway or has a stack of Tony's, it was super cringe.

So, giving my age away here, we read ****oo's Nest in high school before the movie was made. At that time the teacher thought that George C. Scott would be a good McMurphy. So, that's who I had envisioned in that role, and took me a little time to wrap my head around Nicholson.

I've had this argument many times, but I absolutely loved Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Better than Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka, but I know I'm not going to convince you.

People love the original with most things, and they can't accept it done differently. Depp and the story follow the book more closely too btw.

Kristen Stewart as Snow White

I saw that movie in theaters and gave a hearty guffaw when the mirror claimed she was fairer than Charlize Theron. Side note, having never seen Twilight, that movie was my first introduction to Kristen Stewart's front teeth, which I feel should be given top billing right beside her considering how much screen time they get.
No kidding. I mean, Kristen Stewart is hot, but Theron is top shelf.

Can't watch the Depp version. It's just so odd, uncomfortable, and creepy and not in an entertaining way. Their Wonka brought out the worst tendencies of both Depp and Burton. Their top games are among the best out there, but they also can produce performances/films that seem designed to repel half the audience. I actually suspect they are ok with that in many ways.

Yeah, I know the Wonka argument is almost a waste of time. I've had this argument multiple times, b/c we show it at my school and have done a play with the theme.

It's probably my favorite acting role for Depp.

Based on the discussion in the Few Good Men thread, this should be good.

A few off the top of my head

Demi Moore - Jo Galloway in A Few Good Men
Topher Grace- Eddie Brock in Spider-Man 3
Mark Wahlberg- science teacher in the Happening
Lily James - friend zoned best friend in Yesterday
Nicholas Cage in most roles
Jesse Eisenberg - Lex Luther in BVS
Jared Leto - Joker in Suicide Squad
Colin Farrell - Alexander
Liv Tyler - LOTR

You identified some great examples for recent movies. Most notably Eisenberg (an abomination, frankly) and Leto as the Joker.

However, your opinions on Nic Cage are hilariously wrong. He's never been miscast and is always perfect for whatever role it might be he's playing. The movie might be laughably terrible but he's perfect.

And Liv Tyler was great in LOTR. Her freaking voice just "sounds" elven. And she's beautiful.

Someone else mentioned Maggie Gylenhall in Batman. Agreed. Talking about her in that movie as if she is some beautiful woman. Absolutely insulting to beautiful women everywhere.
