He isn't the only person that has caught a ban from this board this week, although for completely different reasons.

Per the director:

"'Set in the world of Toy Story' is kind of weird. Another way to get at it, it's a straightforward sci-fi action film about the Buzz Lightyear character," MacLane, who co-directed Finding Dory and multiple Toy Story shorts for Pixar, tells EW over Zoom. "In the Toy Story universe, it would be like a movie that maybe Andy would have seen, that would have made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure."
So it is literally a commercial for a toy.

No. It's literally a movie that they made a toy from. The same way we have Star Wars action figures, Transformer action figures, and millions of other toys and action figures based on movies.

So your contention is that this is a movie based on the Buzz toy that Andy got as a child instead of the original toy being made to represent a movie character? So basically just a chicken/egg argument?

Either way makes sense to me. Having Andy make a cameo either as a child or an adult would really be the only way to make that distinction obvious right?

No. I think the toy Buzz is based on a show or movie from Andy's childhood, and the movie is a live action reboot of the show or movie. It would follow with the recent trend, especially at Disney, of doing live action reboots of classics from the 80' and 90's to appeal to millennial nostalgia. Think Transformers, GI Joe, X-Men, and all of the recent Disney live action remakes. They all started with kids' shows/movies and had associated toy lines, and now we're seeing remakes and reboots of those in a more adult medium.

ETA That would also easily explain the difference in voices. In universe, there could have been an original voice actor for Buzz that was used for the toy as well. In the live action version they have a different actor.

Will Buzz come out of the closet as a minority LGBTQ space ranger?

If not this will be racist/exclusionary/prejudiced/discriminatory/etc.

the craziest thing about this thread is that while we havent ventured into 2016 ghostbusters territory, we are starting to lean that way.....and that's worrisome

It' s just a pretty 'meta" chain of events for a kids movie.

Movie where toys come to life introduces Buzz Lightyear
Buzz Lightyear then becomes a toy in the real world
Over the next 25 years, we get 3 more movies featuring Buzz Lightyear and 50 shorts and rides at amusement parks.
Then there's a movie about Buzz Lightyear, but not the toy, the "person" that the toy is based on, even though it's also just another movie from the same company with a guy who looks just like Buzz Lightyear, but is going to have a different voice to tell them apart.

I'm sure it will be great, it just seems like a weird logic flow. Like, why didn't they just make a Buzz Lightyear movie with Tim Allen that's a stand-alone?

And to steal from the Pitch Meeting guy on YouTube, if Buzz Lightyear thinks he's a real space ranger in the original Toy Story, why does he "play dead" with the other toys when humans come in the room?

It's strange that a toy doesn't have the same voice as the movie character it is based off of?

We still have our Buzz Lightyear toy back from when it was considered one of the loudest toys of all time. Two more kids later and its still loud as hell but at least well made and fun. (We got rid of the Dora guitar that was even louder because even our daughter thought it was over the top)

Was Christian Bale was doing the voices for Batman toys? This still checks out. And Tim Allen being the voice for the toys and Chris Evan's being the voice for the movies makes even more sense.

Similar to Chris Pratt being cast as Mario. You cast a big name actor to voice the movie voice, but cast a professional no name voice actor to voice the toy, cartoon, video game, etc.
So in the Pixar universe Chris Evans is the big star cast in the movie and Tim Allen is the voice actor doing all the other work. Could be a cool, meta moment in the movie if Andy takes his kid to the Buzz movie premier and Chris Evans is there as himself.

First two games are a lot of fun. Third gets repetitive, but is still pretty good.

It is my personal favorite game series but I have a lot of connections to Disney and Final Fantasy to stomach it. And I would say has some of the most fun gameplay out of anything else out there.

I literally saw a clip of Mickey talking about avenging Goofy's death while he died in Donald's arms. How that gets repetitive must be a trip

No. He's supposed to look like the toy since he's the character the toy is based off of.

Wait, hold the phone. I made the above post before reading the thread. So some of y'all think this is a movie about a movie? I've always thought from Chris Evans tweet last year it was about a real human person in the Toy Story world that the toy Buzz Lighthear is based on. Not a movie that the toy is based on.

Might want to let the director know that he doesn't know what his movie is about.

The Buzz Lightyear movie is clearly way in the future. Yet the Toy Story movies look to be in modern times if not in the 90s or sometime earlier. It makes no sense for the toy to be based on a real person in the Toy Story universe.

This thread! Oh my word it's hilarious.

Put me in the "Buzz Lightyear is a movie character in Andy's universe camp."

As for the trailer, looks good, can't wait!

Still just not buying it. What the director says is " Another way to get at it…"

If that's another way, what's the first way he's indirectly referencing? To me it's as though he's saying since people don't seem to be following think of it this way instead. Almost like he doesn't really give a crap how people justify this movie's existence. The whole point of that entire conversation seems to be he just wanted to make an epic sci-fi movie. However you need to think about it to make it work for you is fine with him.

I really don't care what Buzz Lightyear this is about. This movie is going to be badass, and hit every emotion possible in true Pixar fashion. They will continue to print money, and I won't care because I will throw more at them as they continue to raise the bar.

It's almost like the quotes by the actor and director pretty much contradict each other. Not to mention the director's comments being pretty vague as well.

As well as kotaku leaving off the actual important quote from their ****ty article. (Have I mentioned kotaku sucks?)

he read lines in a sound booth for a few days. Doubt he really knows all that much about the movie.
