I watched the Euphoria pilot back when it debuted in 2019, didn't care for it all that much, and hadn't revisited the show since, despite the following it gathered over the course of its first season. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, though, when HBO released the season two trailer (below), I randomly clicked on it, and, to my surprise, found it to be one of the best trailers for a season of TV I can remember (there's just something about the remix of Gerry Rafferty's "Right Down the Line" I can't get enough of). In fact, I thought the trailer was so good that I decided to give the show itself another chance, and I'm glad I did.

First of all, as a disclaimer, Euphoria doesn't take place on planet Earth. It's not only ridiculously hyper-stylized (sometimes in cool ways, sometimes not so much), but these kids don't operate or talk or date in any way that resembles reality, even by today's teen standards. That, and what few football scenes/discussions there are will drive you nuts in terms of accuracy, if you grew up playing high school or college ball. And yes, there's a ton of nudity - but, like, a ton of d*ck as well. In other words, it's all so ridiculously over-the-top, and I honestly almost gave up again after episode two, but once it hooks you - like a drug - it really hooks you, and I *had* to know how it was all going to go down. So I binged all eight episodes over the past week+, and now I kind of can't wait for season two.

They also released two bonus episodes, in late 2020 and early 2021, filmed during the height of the pandemic, that bridge the gap between seasons one and two, one episode of which, the one focusing on Zendaya's lead character, is seriously one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen. It's basically just an hour-long conversation between two characters at a diner (again, for Covid reasons), but it's so incredibly riveting, and one of the most profound conversations about addiction I've ever heard.

Anyway, I couldn't find a thread for season one, so I wouldn't be surprised if hardly anyone else has watched, but it's totally worth a shot if any of this looks/sounds even remotely interesting to you...

Another note: one of the reasons I've found this show so addicting is that there's a character who I've come to hate more than even Joffrey from Game of Thrones - not in an annoying/poorly-written way, but in a pure evil kind of way - and there comes a point where all you want to do is see his downfall, preferably in agonizing, torturous fashion. I seriously haven't had such a visceral reaction to a TV character in a long time.

I liked season 1 as well and know exactly which character you hate. He is legit terrible.

I feel in love with the show's music and I appreciate the over-the-top style in both visuals and story weaving. It's like if high school was actually as crazy as late night news made it out to be

I caught the show early last year to see what the hype was about and liked it. Like you said TCTTS there are some over the top stuff but still entertaining. I also know as well what character you are both talking about to see his demise go down.

Zendaya is great and you don't see her Disney or Spider-Man character in this. A complete 180. The cinematography and score this series is also great. The season one finale ending was phenomenal how they put it together.

I loved the part 1 special during covid. Great dialogue and can see and feel the characters pain.

Excited to watch and did I mention how great Zendaya is.

Zendaya was whatever to me before this. Didn't really have an opinion of her, good or bad. Now? I think she's absolutely incredible.

It's been so long... I can't even remember what happened in season 1. This is why I miss out so much on future seasons of TV shows. I either have to rewatch the entire show, or I just never go back to them.

I find that rewatching even just the finale of the previous is usually enough to jog my memory.

Super weird show that definitely wont be for a lot of people but I'm hooked on it. Just watched the Rue special episode (havent watched part 2 yet) and agree that it was great. Zendaya is excellent in this show.

The Jules/Part 2 episode isn't quite as good, IMO, but scattered throughout, they go back in a cool way and fill in some little gaps here and there in season one and show some of the same events from her perspective, show that she was dealing with a storyline we weren't previously privy to, etc. It's pretty insightful, and an inventive structure I wish more series could utilize.

As over-the-top as season one can be at times, the two special episodes feature some of best, most grounded, most character-driven dialogue/conversations I've ever heard on TV. They're obviously not as exciting and drama-filled as regular episodes, but they make me wish the other characters/drama/dynamics could be as a considered and grounded. I wouldn't want the show to lose its style or its vibe, but these two episodes just feel like they're made by a slightly more mature/seasoned filmmaker, and know how to better-use the hyper-stylization in moderation, to greater effect. If anything, they have me hoping creator/showrunner/director Sam Levinson is evolving and potentially on an even higher level for season two.

I get annoyed by Colman Domingo's delivery and mannerisms on Fear the Walking Dead, but he is amazing as Rue's sponsor. That episode in the diner is so perfectly acted.

Oh, wow, I didn't know was in Fear the Walking Dead. I'd seen him in a couple minor roles prior to this, but yeah, he's next level here. Almost like a younger, edgier, more raw Morgan Freeman. There's just something about his voice and his delivery that's so captivating. Dude is incredible. He should have won all the Emmys for the diner episode alone.

Enjoyed the first season, especially the carnival episode which I watched several times. For HBO shows is this Girls of the 2020s or will it flame out early?...though in hindsight Girls flamed out after 3-4 seasons. Girls was about showcasing young 20somethings in Brooklyn by an old 20something Lena Dunham...Euphoria is showcasing high school kids in LA by a middle aged Barry Levinson's kid so it's not as authentic

FANTASTIC first episode to season 2. Loved every minute especially the last scene.

What an incredible start to the season.

I didn't know a party could be that tense or that edge-of-your-seat.

And of course, the final scene was about as therapeutic as I imagined that event could be. Fez is the man, and I love that it looks like he's going to play a bigger role this season. (Also, just a guess, but I'm wondering if, after that, Nate gets hooked on pain killers/becomes somewhat of an addict himself.)

Cinematography-wise, it looked to me like the aesthetic of the two special episodes had evolved from season one, and Levinson and the DP confirmed in the making-of at the end of this episode that they did indeed switch to film (which Kodak made specifically for them), and it shows. Man, did this episode look amazing.

So, so glad I decided to give this show another shot. Can't wait to see where everything goes from here.

Btw, I don't think there's an actor on the planet having a run quite like Zendaya is right now…

10.21 - Dune
12.21 - Spider-Man: No Way Home
01.22 - Euphoria S2

Two massive, critically acclaimed blockbusters and probably the most buzzed about TV series currently airing, all in the past two-and-a-half-months. Crazy.

Really liked season 1 and plan to watch season 2 soon or at least get caught up. I'm behind on so much.

Definitely not the type of fare I usually sample, but I like it because it's pretty dark and unique.

TCTTS, I'm interested in which character you hate like Joffrey. I haven't seen season 1 since it aired so it's been awhile, but I'm assuming the dad who basically anal rapes the transgender kid is who you're referring to?

I have to remind myself how unrealistic this show is, because it makes me never want to let my daughters leave the house when they get older. The "kids" in this show are some of the worst/dumbest people in a show I've seen.

While McSteamy definitely has his own horrible issues, no, for me it's Nate. I hate Nate with the fire of a thousands suns. Nate suuuuuuuuuucks.

Funny you mention Girls, because Maude Apatow played a high schooler in season four of that show as well. In 2015. Seven years ago.

Rewatched the season two premiere and I have a prediction...

At the female drug dealer's apartment, she asks Fez if he trusts Rue (the "high school girl" he brought to a drug deal). His response? "With my life," as the camera holds on him an extra beat.

This episode, the filmmakers, etc are all highlighting Fez's apparent larger role this season, but in that moment I wondered if it's all to set up his eventual death, in heartbreaking fashion, due in some way to Rue f/cking something up.

It just feels like a line that could be slyly telegraphing events, in one of those ways where something massive happens late in the season and the filmmakers then winkingly point back and say, "See, we told what was going to happen all the way back in episode one." That, and I could also see Fez's death being a rock bottom of sorts that either sends Rue over the ledge - or - finally sobers her up, at least to a degree.

I don't know, I'm probably way off, but just wanted to throw that out there...

Is it me or is Rue one of the most annoying/least redeemable characters on the show? She comes off as clingy and whiney and seems to make every situation she's in worse for people around her.

Fez is still the most under appreciated person on the show.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

It's not you at all - that's exactly who she is - but that's also the entire point of the show. She's a drug addict whose actions aren't only affecting her, they're beginning to affect more and more people around her. So I'm afraid she's only going to get worse, and make things worse for those around her, before finally getting better/clean, in whatever season that might be. Which is why I'm thinking all of this might somehow be leading to Fez's death, with her being responsible to an extent.

So-so episode until the end, when, for the first time, I actually felt the slightest bit of… pride (?)… in Nate for so frankly telling his dad what's up in exactly the way he did. Such a great moment.

In the behind-the-scenes piece after, I was shocked to discover that, in real life, the actor who plays Nate speaks somewhat softly and with a thick, proper accent. At first I thought he was British, but he's actually Australian. Dude really does pull off a phenomenal American accent.

Anyway, next week looks like a return to legit drama/shenanigans, as opposed to what, tonight, felt like more of a reflective epilogue to the pilot (though still pretty good, all things considered).

Agree about it being so-so this episode. It's good to know I wasn't the only one. The end was good. Nate telling his dad it was all because of him. Is it just me, but I don't care about Kat.

I feel like I will always be interested in Fezco story.

I may have set up in my seat when Minka Kelly asked her to unzip her dress. I thought it might finally be the day I've waited for since the first episode of FNL, but it was not to be.

Overall I thought it was pretty good.
