I haven't read the book, but a number of reactions have essentially said that the movie is more of a companion piece to the book than a straight adaptation. As in, it's the same, basic story, but where the book has [X] as the main plot, the movie has [Y] as the main plot. I may not have this 100% right, but apparently it was initially more of a straight adaptation, and DiCaprio was originally meant to play the Plemons character. But he was ultimately drawn more to the character he ended up playing, and all I know for sure is that the script was then rewritten numerous times to accommodate the change. That said, apparently Plemons' role is still quite significant.

So another white man bad movie?

The role switch by Leo is what made me ask the question initially.

I'm sure the movie is good, but I think I might have to forget a lot of the book to enjoy it. I like Plemons though, he's good. I think Leo is a good cast for Burkhart. Not sure about De Niro. We'll see.

There are a lot of bad white men, sure. It's a complex novel.

Murder
Theft
Lies

Ymmv on that being bad if you think the Osage deserved what happened at the hands of those people

Probably based on the reasonable assumption that you're being intentionally contrarian in this thread.

I'm as conservative as they come. I've read the book. This is story that needs to be told. It demonstrates what greed can make people do. Greed can make all people do bad things. It's a little more complex than just "whitey bad".

Looks good. Like a combination of 'There Will Be Blood', 'Legends of the Fall', and '1923' with elements of your typical Scorsese mob film.

Having just watched '1923' definitely has me more intrigued for a film like this.

Move to Florida if you're offended by this movie. All the bad stuff white people did in history doesn't exist there anymore. It's a safe space for snowflakes that can't handle reality.

This sucks that people are able to see this now on the film festival circuit, but official release isn't until 5 months from now. I mean c'mon.
TCTTS

I wouldn't really call it a "circuit." There was what sounded like a private screening for select VIPs/filmmakers a couple weeks ago, *one* screening at Cannes this past Saturday, and then I seriously doubt it screens again until the festivals start up again in September. At which point it'll only be a month away from public release on October 6.

To be fair contrarian was the intuitive way to go after playing the "I'm the real victim here" card about a movie based on historical Indian killings.

The Hollywood liberal echo chamber bubble has a lot of people perpetually on edge at the thought that some people may find their overwhelming bias, which permeates so many of their movies, annoying or abrasive. People become more reasonable as you hit the Huntington Beach area and further south. Or head east an hour or so. But Hollywood and places like Silicon Valley and the Bay Area are terminally infected with the woke mind virus.

If you are sick of the deceitful leftist narratives pushed in the entertainment industry, they literally get offended and turn into little "tough guys" lol. If you are sick of actors or athletes injecting one-sided politics into entertainment, they accuse YOU of tainting this board with politics.

Oh like Indians raping women and children and making the husband/father watch in horror, before they light them on fire and make them continue to watch? Indians stringing up white babies to horses and running them back and forth through cactus, making their mothers watch as they scream and cry in agony while they get torn to shreds? Could go on and on describing unimaginable horrors carried out by literal savages with zero concept of morality or right vs wrong against women and children.

But they are almost always portrayed as noble and enlightened and super generous...with the white man being hateful, violent, greedy and reckless.

Is this movie not based on a true story?

So we are now getting offended at depiction of factual events?

Unless the movie adds commentary like "every representative of XYZ skin color/gender/nationality/etc always does this bad thing!" then why are we labeling it as the stupid buzz word everyone feels cool using?

Often times these "based on a true story" pieces are super exaggerated. Maybe this is the rare exception...I am not familiar with this story, and the movie looks very interesting and well made. But just going based on decades of experience and observation, I would bet $$$ that it is not entirely honest or accurate.

LOL...Loyal watcher of CNN and/or MSNBC I see. Maybe Young Turks.

Bet you think the "don't say gay" law that simply says 2nd and 3rd grade teachers can't talk about sex and gender with 7 and 8 year olds behind their parents backs is a complete travesty. An affront to free speech and extremely bigoted.

My nephew does community theater in Central Texas. He went up to Oklahoma to be an extra in this movie. I can't wait to watch it and scream "That's my uncredited nephew!"

Your point is often true, they aren't making dry documentaries but films to entertain so liberties can be taken. The book itself isn't all provable fact but some theories from the author.

It should be noted that courts, probably nearly entirely staffed by white men, officially granted the Osage the proceeds from the oil discoveries and once crimes were being committed against the Osage the "hero" investigators in the book are also.....white men. And yes. the main alleged corrupt power figure trying to exploit the Osage's wealth is also....a white man. I hope an intelligent person can navigate these difficult waters.

Explain your post and how you got brainwashed into believing such loony drivel then. What did Florida do aside from say you can't teach harmful divisive CRT and gender/sexual stuff to small children 3rd grade and below?

Yep, hopefully it's somewhat honest and accurate...looks amazing and I look fwd to seeing it. Just been tainted by years of bias (that always seems to go one way) I guess.

I've heard nothing but good things about the book from anyone who has read it, from all ranges of political or social beliefs. Mostly white Texan men who like to hunt and fish. I plan to read the book before watching, and would think anyone will be fully on board with the movie if you do as well.
