Have DiCaprio and Deniro ever been in a movie together?
Deniro played his dad in a movie in the 90's

There are people on this board who haven't seen This Boy's Life?

I'd imagine most people haven't seen it

The new trailer dropped, and it's getting some criticism online. My major beef is that for a movie based on a mystery novel where the reader is trying to figure out who is behind the murders, the trailer gives away nearly every single plot twist, including the biggest one. Don't quite understand.

WARNING: Spoilers in the trailer

The movie is based on a novel which is based on historical events. To me that's not really the same as a mystery, unless the film's major plot points wildly deviate from what actually happened. Not to get into another derailment but I don't see that from what previews I've seen.

The whole point of the book's style is that you don't know who is behind the murders until the last third of the novel. Even then, there's a very late twist that's pretty wild. It even introduces characters as friend or foe, only for later twists to make it not so. Those twists are spoiled all over the trailer.

The first trailer stuck with that style of "can you find the wolves in this picture." Now it seems to make this out like there's no mystery at all in a book about one of the great mysteries of the early 20th century.

As a non-book reader I just watched the trailer, and no disrespect, but I genuinely don't know what you're referring to. As someone who knows nothing of the story, there was nothing at all that felt spoiled here. It just seemed like a very standard setup of the story/conflict. Also, to be clear, they're not telling the exact same story as the book. It's apparently from a different perspective, or covers part of the story not covered in the book. Something along those lines.

As for the trailer itself, I thought it was incredible, and honestly more compelling than the last one.

I'm all in on this movie.

Scorsese in IMAX in October, Villeneuve in IMAX in November...

Seriously, hats off to Apple for their approach to theatrical. They're not just releasing their movies to their own platform (like Netflix), nor are they placing their theatrical efforts in limited release (like most other streamers). They recently made a pledge to team with studios to release their movies *wide* in theaters, and now they're even releasing one of their movies in IMAX, which I don't think a streamer has ever done before. Add in how great their shows have been the past year or two, and they've quickly become one of my favorite streamers.

Well I know how I'm seeing it.

So it is releasing exclusively in IMAX, or is it a wide release?

That's the only thing I can think of it being. Some of the main mysteries of the book are shredded in the trailer. Maybe if you haven't read the book, the lack of reveals and sleuthing won't be a big deal. I have to think Scorsese is moving it from a mystery to a straight narrative where you know who is on what side early on, or else there is no reason for that type of trailer. I'm just a bit disappointed in that, because it would be a helluva way to construct a historical film. Kudos to Grann for being willing to take that chance on the book. I'm sure the movie will still be great. I hope it doesn't eliminate all the mystery the book dives into so deeply.

I do like that the trailer is playing it close to the vest with the main character from the book, the FBI Agent played by Plemons. This is a great role for him.

I'm also fascinated that this film appears revolve around two characters that play important, but supporting roles in the book. Plemons' character is the main guy in the books.

"It felt too much like an investigation into detective work," said the actor, who was originally slated to play FBI agent Tom White. White is a prominent figure in Grann's book, and his story is fairly cut and dried. "We tried to do more research, hoping to go deeper on Tom White. Does he have difficulties? Maybe he's drinking?" Scorsese recalled. "I finally said, 'What are we making? A film about Tom White, who comes in and saves everybody?'"

The film began to coalesce once DiCaprio took on the role of Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of William Hale (Robert De Niro). "Marty and Leo's idea to focus on the relationship between Bill and Ernest made sense to me," De Niro added. "They wanted to focus more on that dynamic instead of Tom White coming in and saving the day."
...
It was DiCaprio who suggested focusing on the morally complex Ernest and his marriage to Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone), an Osage woman. "The love story [changed everything]," Scorsese admitted. "I said, 'How do we do the love story?' We couldn't figure it out. And then Leo said, 'What if I play Ernest?'"

Well, crap. The Tom White angle was the best part of the book. Sounds like the investigative aspect is going to take a backseat, which explains why the trailer gave away all the twists and turns of the book, because it's not going to have them in the film.

Agree. I liked that part of the book too. But it seems like Scorsese and DiCaprio are more interested in telling a love story in the middle of an investigation instead of an investigation story that contains some love. They definitely know more about making movies than I do so we'll wait and see what story the find to tell.

Poor Plemons. The focus was always going to be on DiCaprio, it was just a question of which character it was going to be.

Too funny they couldn't figure out the love story angle until Leo suggested that he play the love interest. Then it all started to make sense.

Scorcese talks about it here at the end of this video, I'm still certain this movie is going to be amazing. But this does kind of sound like BS to me, haha

I thought it was good, if a bit long. You could probably lose a good 25 minutes.

My one main complaint is how it wraps up. I think we really needed a longer scene with Ernest and Mollie once she learned the truth. Plus, it was never made 100% clear if he was purposely trying to kill Mollie, or was ignorant to what he was injecting her with.

I had the same thought. Thought it was a good movie, but absolutely hated the wrap up. Just cheapened it. You made me watch 3.5 hours of character development to wrap it up like it's some kind of joke? Come on, I was bought in. Have no desire to ever see this film again.
