Saw it Friday night, and overall it was enjoyable. Especially compared to most of the other new movie releases (I am NOT a Marvel fan, and even after seeing the previews twice now, I have absolutely no idea what the upcoming movie "The Marvels" is about).
With that said, I do tend to pick movies apart, and I have done that with this one. But the stuff that bothers me about this one is different.
The ending would have typically bothered me because of the absolute suspension of reality that it requires (I realize all the IJ movies are fantasy, but IMO, this was a step beyond that). But, as soon as they went diving, I knew the bad guys were going to show back up and at some point IJ would have to defeat them. Rather than just having IJ "kill the bad guys" (or lead them to their deaths), I liked the alternative way they met their demise. The ending was an unexpected twist for me. I also really enjoyed the opening scene. Chase scene in Tangier was clever (I liked the jilted fiance getting in on the action) but dragged on just a little too long.
I also liked the fact that Helena wasn't exactly a "good guy". She was a con artist who just wanted to sell history for her own benefit, and I thought this was a nice foil to IJ.
The problems - I'll start with a really small one that probably most people wouldn't even notice. I actually worked at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, so "Alabama University" just made me cringe. It's all history, so why not at least use the correct name of the school?
The timeline of the movie made it seem like IJ left NYC for Morocco the night of the parade/subway escape (unless I missed something) and he and Helena were in the air at the same time. If that's the case he and Helena would have had to have been on the same flight. Why not just confront her there? I realize I just have to ignore this in order to accept the rest of the movie, but it my brain can't help it.
The CIA part of the story was very confusing (I initially did not even realize there were CIA agents involved, and once I did, I was confused as to who was who) and hard to believe. And it wasn't resolved very well, IMO. Basically that whole story line just dropped away after the agent was killed on the helicopter.
Too many bad guy goons (see my point above about the confusion with the CIA). And the one with the silly little mustache and bad southern accent was annoying AF.
I did, however, enjoy the plane scene at the end. All those goons saluting the bad guy like he was Hitler was creepy.
The kid was also super annoying for a lot of reasons, but his worst offense was his awful accent. What the heck even was that?
And as much as I think Mads Mikkelsen makes a great movie villain, my first thought in his early moments on screen was "he looks like a Bond villain". ~Facepalm~ (can you tell I'm not a huge movie buff?).
I even whispered this to my BF, who replied "He looks like the guy whose face melted." Which also happens to be true.
So, I spent a good 10-15 min trying to figure out where this guy fit in with the previous movies, thinking there was some connection I was supposed to make. Nope, he just kinda looked like Arnold Toht (at least to someone who hasn't seen ROTLA in a long time) and was familiar from Casino Royale.
Also, I felt like Voller/Schmidt should have had some major scars/disfigurement from that smash in the face that knocked him off the train.
