Agree with RHCP, they seem to get left out a lot for some reason when this discussion comes up.

Nirvana is tough just because they so influential but were around for such a short period of time in the grand scheme of things.

Good list OP. I'd add Foo Fighters before Nirvana or Chili Peppers.

The Beatles or the Stones. If you include some pop, then I'd go with ABBA.
What you say, Paper Champion? I'm gonna beat you like a dog, a dog, you hear me!

Beatles or the Stones aren't American

If going off hits, popularity, and longevity…my gut tells me Foo Fighters. Maybe Aerosmith.

Shockingly enough, going off number 1 hits, I think the top 2 that everyone has listed here are The Beach Boys at the top, then Bon Jovi, then the Eagles.
Dimebag Darrell

Metallica
Pantera (If we're counting Metallica as "rock" and not "metal")
Alice In Chains
Skynyrd

In no order. Those are my favorites, so they are the greatest

Are we not including Springsteen because he is not a "band". He could be argued to be the biggest American Rock and Roll star ever. Springsteen and the E Street band sells out stadiums still like nobody else on these lists.

Van Halen behind Aerosmith
The Eagles greatest American band; not greatest "rock" band
Metallica maybe, if metal is "rock"
Aerosmith used to be my #1
The Grateful Dead LOL
The Black Crowes nope
Pearl Jam I seriously don't know anything they've done since 1999
Lynyrd Skynyrd maybe, had most of them not died
Guns N Roses too dysfunctional, not enough quality work
The Allman Brothers don't know their catalog well enough
The Doors not large enough body of work, and not enough "rock"
The Beach Boys could be biased; was never a huge fan. surf rockers

Who ya got?
An egregious oversight, I would probably put Credence Clearwater Revival over all of the above.

But I put Foo Fighters #1 due to longevity, staying power, and consistently good music.
Maybe RHCP #2.

I probably like Nirvana and Alice in Chains the most, but not when discussing "best career." They fall under "what could have been."

Are in a class by themselves, in terms of hits, longevity, public recognition, popularity across pop/rock fans, etc.

I would add Boston to the list others have come up with.
