Pearl Jam and I can't accept any other answer.
Sure, they are grunge legends (distantly behind Nirvana and Alice in Chains), and while they got a head start on Foo Fighters, what have they done since 2000?

6 albums, sold out global tours.

Thst says more about you than them.

They're not even grunge. They are a rock and roll band that came up in the grunge era.

I'll give Foo Fighters might be more popular, but Taylor Swift is more popular but not necessarily better.

And nothing you can say can change my mind so I'm bailing on this convo.

They may have been but a 3 year period doesn't make a great rock band.

There is no way in a million years they'd still be touring in 2023.

Am I the only one that will change the channel any time a Pearl Jam song comes on.

Eddie's voice is just nails on a chalkboard to me.

In terms of notoriety/popularity, I think Aerosmith, The Eagles, and Metallica are the top 3 in some fashion.

Ten is the best grunge album.

Nope. You have no taste.

You didn't say "my favorite grunge album is Ten" which would be accurate.

I see. Since you're not using your opinion, please tell me what metric you're using to determine that Dirt is better than Ten.

The fact that it took about 20 posts to even mention Tom Petty makes me sad.
But on the subject of CCR, I think they actually outsold the Beatles in '69 and '70. Their level of success has been largely forgotten.
Personally though I think the answer is the eagles, and it's not really close. Even beyond the insane number of albums they sold (200 million), they basically created country rock, and when they got bored with that they redefined what rock could be with Hotel California. Their music has also stood up to time the way few have, even today with a completely revamped lineup they sell out worldwide.
No one really has their resume.

My opinion is always correct when it comes to music. That's all you need to know. Are you new here?

Well I mean everything the Stones have done has been ripped from American music. So…

Chicago
Fleetwood Mac

Boston only has one album most people really care about. As great as it was, you need more than that to be the greatest. Longevity has to matter.

I'm not really a huge fan, but I'd think The Eagles and RHCP could be considered the greatest American rock bands. Possibly Metallica? Hard to say.

You want to talk about American gaudiness, arrogance, over-the-top-ness? If I'm sending a band out to represent America in the rock-n-roll Olympics...

So out of OP's list I said Aerosmith over the Eagles exactly because of what you just wrote. The Eagles are a better band, Aerosmith is a better rock band.
