It seems like a lot of people are wanting to turn this into a "my favorite rock band is" instead of greatest. One metric of greatest is surely staying power, and a lot of the bands mentioned by people had a couple of popular albums or were a popular band during the span of one decade. Bands in the conversation of greatest need to have remained relevant for more than a decade, I'd think. That's why I included RHCP.

When talking about "the greatest American rock band of all time", the only answer is Aerosmith. I know it's hard to do with art, but when talking about the greatest, facts should be more important than opinions. They're the second best selling American rock band of all time behind the Eagles (unless you're counting Bruce Springsteen as a rock band). The problem with the Eagles is that they were only relevant for one decade. Unless I'm forgetting another band, Aerosmith is the only band to have top 10 hits in 4 different decades. They've been hugely influential to the history of rock music, and have more music video awards than any other rock band. They also have the classic American comeback story. They had a couple of huge albums in the 70s, drugs killed their career, they broke up and were left for dead, completely forgotten for 10 years and then came back and were monsters for 15 years.

Skynyrd most talented. Probably have to go w Aerosmith for longevity.

Yeah, you're probably correct on that. Don't care for but a few of their songs, but hard to argue with their popularity and longevity.

Just because a band might not have lasted for more than a decade doesn't mean they lost relevance. Zeppelin is still relevant today and they haven't been a band in 40+ years.

If aliens came to earths said show is America's best rock band I think it would have to be Aerosmith. Not my favorite but I think it's what the aliens would need to hear.

To be honest I'm not sure Zeppelin is relevant to very many people under the age of 40.

Zeppelin had a pretty productive run from last 60's through the 70's. I'd say any band even being mentioned as "greatest" should have at least 3-4 solid albums over a 15+ year timespan. A lot of people have brought up bands that were really good for a short time and left us one or two really good albums.

I think they fall into a group of acts with Prince & Bowie where younger millennials and zoomers wouldn't think they know them and if you'd played them their top 10 songs they'd be like ooohhhh that's them? I love them!

Bowie and Prince wouldn't have 10 recognizable songs between the two of them, among gen z. IMO.

some folks would say that their 1976 album saved rock & roll in the U.S.A.

as Disco was taking over everything

For the record, I tend to agree they the timespan is kind of irrelevant. Nobody in their right mind has The Beatles or Led Zeppelin outside of the top 5 greatest bands of all time, and both were only around for a single decade.

Nirvana made a massive impact on music and pop culture, and is still relevant 30 years later. The fact that they were around so few years shouldn't be a hindrance, it should make them even more impressive.

I would think Gen Z knows wayyyyyy more Prince than Zeppelin. Bowie, probably not.

Very few in this generation are listening to rock music. Hell is there actually any new rock music being made? I honestly don't know.

Outside of stairway to heaven (which is a terrible beating of a song) I can't imagine any twenty year old knowing a zep song. But they can all sing 1999, ***** control, little red corvette, and let's go crazy.

In general you're right but if you mean people under the age of 40 who listen to rock music I'd say you are very wrong. But I don't think there's really a way for either of us to prove that we are right.

Yeah I'm gonna disagree on that. Zoomers would at the very least know Stairway, Immigrant Song (thanks Thor), Whole Lotta Love, maybe Kashmir, and maybe a few others.

And I think you're WAY overestimating Prince.

Just checked Spotify...

Zeppelin songs with over 500M plays: 3 (The ones mentioned above.)

Prince songs with over 500M plays: 0 (Purple Rain got closest with 409M.)

Honestly tell me some. Not trying to be difficult. I think I stopped listening to "rock" when I went to college.

A quick perusal of the top 40 rock songs on iTunes includes way more old stuff than new stuff. Okay I stopped at the top twenty and it looks like 10 of those are at least 25 years old, and several are like 40 years old. The only new artist I know is Brandi Carlile and I wouldn't consider her rock.

Enjoying the discussion.

I meant in general. Rock seems dead.
Your top billboard 100 seems to be all pop, hip hop, or snap track bro country.

Everyone of those prince songs is played at every wedding / mixer they attend (maybe not ***** control at the wedding) and they're all singing along. I've never heard a zeppelin song played at either of those. Just my anecdotal thoughts.

Check this out, I found some new stuff to listen to that I enjoy! Rick has great insight here, and it's the most optimistic he's ever sounded about current music, ha!

Well yeah. None of the bands discussed on this thread are relevant to your average 20-30 year old in that case.

Rival Sons is amazing, especially their new album Darkfighter
Dirty Honey
Mammoth WVH (Wolfgang Van Halen)
Crobot
Airbourne
Clutch
Royal Blood

And obviously they're not a new band by any stretch but the new Foos album is really ****ing good and that hasn't been the case with them in many years.

One badass kid does not prove me wrong. Most young kids listen to Taylor, Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, etc…..

They just aren't interested in zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin was release in 1969, that's 54 years ago.
I was a high school senior in 1998, so that would mean 1944 (gonna do some research……). The most popular song that year was "swinging on a star" by bing crosby. Which I've never heard, and certainly wouldnt have been caught dead listening to in 98.
