The Beatles aren't a good example as far as longevity. Despite their short timeframe they popped out 12 studio albums and five live ones. That's more than many of the bands mentioned here, including my Eagles pick.
I agree with this. They have a ton of good songs, but they've never elevated to great status for me.Diggity said:
Foo Fighters belong nowhere on this list.
They've stayed together for a long time but their peak output never approached "greatest" anything IMHO.
Many folks seem to want to give them credit simply for surviving the death of rock in popular culture. That is respectable for sure, but doesn't elevate them to "greatest"

No, we don't.
Right about everyone except for Bowie, though I could be biased coming from a (mostly) gay/queer circle. He endures because he was one of the first to understand that being a performer had become just as, if not more, important than being a musician.Ol_Ag_02 said:Brian Earl Spilner said:
Bowie and Prince wouldn't have 10 recognizable songs between the two of them, among gen z. IMO.
I would think Gen Z knows wayyyyyy more Prince than Zeppelin. Bowie, probably not.
Very few in this generation are listening to rock music. Hell is there actually any new rock music being made? I honestly don't know.
Outside of stairway to heaven (which is a terrible beating of a song) I can't imagine any twenty year old knowing a zep song. But they can all sing 1999, ***** control, little red corvette, and let's go crazy.
And with the best American rock album with Rocks.rooftop18403 said:
If aliens came to earths said show is America's best rock band I think it would have to be Aerosmith. Not my favorite but I think it's what the aliens would need to hear.
$324 million in worldwide tour ticket sales and 80 million albums sales. For a band that wasnt known for "hit singles". Hell of a run, much to Diggitys dismay.90 bull said:
I am surprised Van Halen isn't getting more run here. Not saying top 3, but top 10 easily. Close to 20 years of success

Where does Pixies rank for everyone?

Personal ranking is top 10, but I wouldn't have them that high on the greatest of all time list though. Probably in the 20s.

I went though the entire thread to see if anyone rejected this into the tenth row…
Oh my lord, talk about a band that seems to have been lost to people's memories since they broke up. Go back to the first two albums and tell me they aren't nearly perfect rock albums. Especially Murmur, holy sh*t, for a debut album, I say holy sh*t again. And the highs they achieved in the early 90's…they were as big as anyone for a stretch.
I'm sure many remember them only by the radio hits, some of which suffered from massive overplaying. But they had an amazing run from 1983 to 1996, and still some quality in the post-Bill Berry years.
They are worth a revisit by anyone and I love the recent attention they've gotten from being featured on The Bear.

A lot I love on here, a lot amaze me to even be mentioned. For example, even though I personally like REM a lot, no way do I think they deserve mention in this context. (Hell, Talking Heads surpass them, imo.)

Van Halen behind Aerosmith
The Eagles greatest American band; not greatest "rock" band
Metallica maybe, if metal is "rock"
Aerosmith used to be my #1
The Grateful Dead LOL
The Black Crowes nope
Pearl Jam I seriously don't know anything they've done since 1999
Lynyrd Skynyrd maybe, had most of them not died
Guns N Roses too dysfunctional, not enough quality work
The Allman Brothers don't know their catalog well enough
The Doors not large enough body of work, and not enough "rock"
The Beach Boys could be biased; was never a huge fan. surf rockers
Who ya got?
But I put Foo Fighters #1 due to longevity, staying power, and consistently good music.
Maybe RHCP #2.
I probably like Nirvana and Alice in Chains the most, but not when discussing "best career." They fall under "what could have been."

I think Talking Heads and REM are on the same tier. And that tier is nowhere near the Aerosmith/Van Halen/Eagles tier.
Really, it's gotta be one of those 3. I don't see a strong enough argument from any other American band to be on the same tier as all 3 of these.
