I'm a few days late to this spirited discussion but it is relevant to me as I sit here in my Iron Maiden T shirt browsing Texags.

For the topic I would submit the following in no particular order.
Tom Petty
Aerosmith
Van Halen
KISS
Metallica
ZZ Top
Eagles

All of these had success that passed through decades. That is impressive in music period.

Out of USA bands Rush and Iron Maiden are my two biggies. 40+ years of relative consistency and still putting out decent stuff. Maiden has become too proggy for me in the last 10 years but their 2000-2010 stuff was great. I think Clockwork Angels may be one of Rush's best it is outstanding.

For new rock there is a TON of great stuff out there you just have to look for it. Oddly enough most of it is coming out of Sweden. Search for some of the following bands to get started : Eclipse, Dorothy, Pretty Maids, The Pretty Reckless, H.E.A.T, W.E.T., Crazy Lixx, Chez Kane.

I love Rush, obviously, but I'm continuously amazed at any Rush fan who thinks Clockwork Angels is near the top of their work. It's good, but imo it doesn't come near the brilliamce of Rush circa 1976 - 1986.

And Rush is definitely greater than any American rock band.

After all, they kicked By-Tor's ass, saved the land of the overworld, and made it possible for any rock band to exist.

Just catching up on this. There are distinct tiers here...

Tier 1 (in no particular order)- these are influencers, cultural icons, groundbreakers, universal draw, household Americana names
Bruce
Eagles
Aerosmith
Beach Boys

Tier 2
Pearl Jam
Black Crowes
Nirvana
Petty
Metallica
Foo Fighters

I need to think about how this level gets defined, but each one of these is one or two traits short of the above group- whether it's narrower audience (Metallica), longevity (nirvana), not sonicly unique (foo fighters, crowes)...

Lots to think about...
(Edit: Rush is Canadian!)

Like them or not I think The Grateful Dead are tier 1. They are one of the biggest live bands of all time, and a cultural icon. You go to Target and look at their "vintage" shirts and you will always see Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Grateful Dead. They are at that level of universal name recognition.

I agree early 80s Rush is outstanding much like Maiden in that time but Rush is one of the few classic rock bands that made amazing music as their closing piece.

Agreed.

Clockwork Angels is an excellent album. I find Seven Cities and Wish Them Well to be my least favorite on the disc but the rest are so good.

You seem pretty upset about this. You also paint with a pretty broad brush. Metallica is in your OP list, and they are well-known "Rush geeks". Same can be said for Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, KISS, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, Tool, Eddie Van Halen. The list could go on, but I'll stop there.

I'm happy to be lumped into such "geeks".

You missed the point entirely. I've said over & over that I love Rush. Some dingus was trying to say Clockwork Angels was up there with their best stuff ever or something stupid like that. The truth is that most people who love Rush don't know anything past the 80's but the superfans get butt hurt when you say stuff like that. They think everything Rush ever released is genius. The CrossFit analogy is good. I liken it to soccer fans. They're so easy to get riled up. It's hilarious to me.

Threads like this (and the Canadian one) remind me of Fast Fred.

His wealth of knowledge and experiences were awesome.

He's somewhere on the other side, playing bass in a great band, I hope.

Since individual front men (Bruce and Petty) of bands were considered, then Prince can be in there too and is definitely Tier 1.

There's a lot of good new rock music being put out IMO.

What's some good current bands? I could use some new work music.

Rival Sons is amazing, especially their new album Darkfighter
Dirty Honey
Mammoth WVH (Wolfgang Van Halen)
Crobot
Airbourne
Clutch
Royal Blood

And obviously they're not a new band by any stretch but the new Foos album is really ****ing good and that hasn't been the case with them in many years.

Rival Sons is definitely one of the best new bands. I think you can easily add in Greta Van Fleet, Wolfmother, and any Dan Auerbach project (Black Keys, The Arcs, and his solo work). The Allah-Las are great throwback surf rock, plus it wouldn't hurt to include Citizen Cope and The Heavy. Agree on the FFs, I always wonder if they'd be as great had Grohl not spent half a decade beating the skins for Nirvana.

I think the correct answer is Aerosmith. But ZZ Top is my emotional choice since they were huge in two decades and are the longest running American band with the same members in history. And I like them better so there is that.
