You put quotes around "racist" as if the daughter wasn't racist. Yet she clearly was. How can one tell? Because if a white character said, "I don't trust black people", then the entire country would have been up in arms about their racism. Racism is racism. It doesn't matter what race it is directed towards. And saying so isn't anti-woke vigilance, it's common sense.

And of course Obama has an agenda making this movie. Everybody has an agenda on everything we do. You had an agenda when you made your post. I have an agenda responding to it.

It's been a while, and the movie was quite forgettable, so I don't remember the reconciliation you are referring to. You talking about when they went looking for Julia Roberts's daughter? When she yelled at the deer? I don't consider any of that a "reconciliation", but a lame attempt to make the movie "scary". The black girl never said, "you know I was wrong about you people. White people are pretty awesome!" or anything like that.

And at first, I was entertained.. but mostly because I was looking forward to a clever explanation that never came. Sorta like how the ending of Game of Thrones pissed everybody off.

AMANDA
"We f/ck every living thing on this planet over and think it'll be fine because we use paper straws and order the free range chicken. And the sick thing is, I think deep down we know we're not fooling anyone. I think we know we're living a lie. An agreed upon mass delusion to help us ignore and keep ignoring how awful we really are."

RUTH
"I'm not down with most of the things that you do and say, but… this is the part of the Venn diagram where we overlap.I agree with everything you just said. But as awful as people might be... nothing's gonna change the fact that we are all we've got."

If you read that dialogue as anything other than a reconciliation, I don't know what else to say. Amanda is calling out her own liberal bullsh*t, and Ruth is saying that despite their differences, she not only understands where Amanda is coming from, but that they're all each other has now. Is Ruth saying, "White people are pretty awesome!" No, because that would be idiotic. But she finally has EMPATHY for Amanda, which is well on the road to "Maybe these white people aren't as bad as I thought."

The movie required that the characters be isolated at all times, which came across as incredibly artificial.

If all of these strange events happened around a community, imagine just how much open communication there would have been between hundreds of neighbors trying to figure it all out. People would be lining the streets looking for answers.

Imagine all of the people trying to escape the city by heading out to the country.

Just a silly premise from start to finish.
This was actually done MUCH better in "Greenland"

with the incredible Morena Baccarin and Gerard Butler

which was a hell of a lot more realistic than this movie.

you did actually see what would REALLY happen in local communities when the SHTF.

speaking of which, isn't Morena Baccarin just a better looking version of Gal Gadot? It's amazing she wasn't cast as wonder woman since she also has a foreign accent.

did not realize obama was involved, so went into it without realizing i was supposed to vehemently hate it and **** all over it.

i thought it was a very interesting premise that was poorly executed. disappointed that so much potential was wasted, but definitely didn't dislike it as much as everyone here. a fairly mindless popcorn flick with some entertaining moments here and there.
This is where I am at.

I enjoy "end of days' / doomsday movies that are realistic

NOT the bs "oh look there is a 900 foot tidal wave demolishing Manhattan" or godzillas

but realistic- "what happens when the lights go out"

Do you have a short list of these kinds of movies? This one was OK. I didn't hate it but I watch these more for "what if" and "am I missing anything if the lights go out." They are more for thinking exercises so I didn't get bent out of shape by the white guilt or overt racism…that's just noise to me.

I enjoy stuff like "One Second After" or "Patriots"…do you have any good movies that are realistic that you can recommend?

I should have read this thread before watching. This was horrible. And the ending was beyond unsatisfyingly flat. I was trying to figure out how they were gonna wrap it up in 10 minutes and then the credits rolled w 8 remaining. I feel tricked. I am deeply disappointed annd unimpressed with everyone involved in the creation of this movie. Except for Bacon, I'll give him a pass- the only logical part of the whole thing. I hope he got paid- a lot.

I'm trying to find where it was mentioned, but I just read The Jakarta Pandemic. Glad I didn't read it prior to covid, would have made me paranoid af.

Personally, I liked it. It's apocalyptic. The bad news is that when, not if, but when this scenario plays out in the US, it will not be "resolved" in a few hours, days, or weeks. It will feel exactly the same way as you did with the ending as you grapple with lack of info, duration, and closure….except obviously it will be far worse.

interestingly- WALKING DEAD is a pretty good example of what will happen once the SHTF.

Castaway with Tom Hanks on a personal human level.
