Yeah why did two planes crash in the exact same spot? And the oil tanker maybe lost its gps but was it unaware of Long Island and just ran into it?

I also never understood why the daughter (other than just blindly hating white people) was so rude and angry the entire movie. Also if they were so wealthy, I dont think they'd be renting their house on Airbnb.

I saw the comment that the animals were meant to represent all of nature. It is fighting back against us, warning us whatever. And we either ignore it or yell back at it mindlessly.
come on man!! rich people on Long Island always rent out their mansions to the city folk!!

There a trilogy book series called "1 Second After" that explores this very topic. It's terrifying.

So, the consensus is that Muy is the only one who liked the movie!?
it's bad for the reasons enunciated by the crew here..

but I still enjoyed the movie for the good acting and the overall theme of:

"the USA is @#$@#$ so hard if our high tech goes down"

is it a good set of books?

they should make a movie of THAT

because in reality an EMP from Russia/Iran/North Korea/China

is a hell of a lot more likely and realistic than a Cali and Texas team up versus the other 48 states civil war.

It's An amazing series and a pretty quick read. The author is a professor who studies and game plans this kind of events. He's lectured on what a complete breakdown of civilization would look like.

Makes me want to re-read it again.

I read about half of "One Second After" before losing it in the moving process but I was glued to that book. It would make a truly horrific (but insightful) movie if done right. I need to buy it used and resume reading.

Great book and probably about as realistic of a SHTF fiction as I have ever seen. If done right, I think they could fit it into one long movie, but mini-series may be the best way to go.

People think they are ok if they have a few guns and good amt of ammo. No, in that scenario you are going to wish you lived DEEP out in the sticks, or had family or close friends that did and would let you stay in exchange for providing additional defense and manpower.

This. It could have been so much better, but I feel like numerous opportunities were missed.

Can the urbanite elites who make and finance these movies maybe hire a guy like Mike Glover or some other survivalist/former spec ops as a consultant any time they are going to inject a fake counterfeit redneck "prepper" into their movies? I feel like they always swing and miss and the characters never pass as the real deal. There were so many things about Kevin Bacon's character that I would have changed. They could still make him come off as the bad guy, but I kept alternating between eye-roll and chuckle at how he was depicted. They make the "crazy/mean redneck" look the exact same in all these movies too.

I read One Second After years ago, and recommended it to friends. It is the reason I own the whole Foxfire series of books.

I'd recommend reading Black Autumn, it has an even more realistic depiction of how precarious everything is, and how easily the house of cards comes tumbling down.

Did anyone else find it weird that the kid pulled out not one, not two, but several teeth? If I "accidentally" pulled out a tooth, and then another one, I think I might pause.

Ha kind of what I was getting at. They risked their lives, put their entire families at risk, and almost got in a gun battle for meds that don't seem to address the medical issue in any real helpful way. I guess it might temporarily keep his liquifying mouth from getting infected?

But back to the teeth falling out thing, that is probably my most terrifying occasionally recurring nightmare. That scene creeped me out for sure.

The movie required that the characters be isolated at all times, which came across as incredibly artificial.

If all of these strange events happened around a community, imagine just how much open communication there would have been between hundreds of neighbors trying to figure it all out. People would be lining the streets looking for answers.

Imagine all of the people trying to escape the city by heading out to the country.

Just a silly premise from start to finish.

There is not an eye roll gif big enough to describe this movie.

It was laughably bad and predictable.

I called the ending as soon as they focused on the frozen tablet.

This review kind of nailed it:

Quote:

Leave the World Behind is a dumb movie disguised as a smart movie, a middling thriller whose decorated cast and tricky camerawork can't compensate for its undercooked, overwritten script.
Quote:

The bones of a decent disaster flick are here, but they're buried under two hours of shapeless, pretentious character drama. Esmail (working from the novel by Rumaan Alam) continually shuffles the six characters into new permutations as if to explore new facets of their psyches or to move their stories forward, but these episodes don't add up to anything; They're merely opportunities for characters to spout cryptic, faux-profound observations.

This is where I am at.

I enjoy "end of days' / doomsday movies that are realistic

NOT the bs "oh look there is a 900 foot tidal wave demolishing Manhattan" or godzillas

but realistic- "what happens when the lights go out"

Same here. Most doomsday movies are over the top bs or they yada, yada, we are now 10 years in the future and everyone has accepted this new life. I wish more movies or shows would spend more time in the confused, attempting to make sense of what is going on state. Which is kinda where this one was, but would be much better as a series where you do get slow payoff figuring out what the hell happened.

At the insistence of my dad, who wanted to see this because A) Julia Roberts is in it, and B) he thought the oil tanker scene on the Netflix homepage looked cool, I finally watched it tonight with my parents

Yes, the dialogue at times is on-the-nose and overwritten.

Yes, the camera movements get a little old and the soundtrack is super random.

And sure, the ending is abrupt (though I thought it was hilarious and kind of perfect).

But good gosh, a number of you had me expecting the worst piece of sh*t known to man, when it's not even close. Like, not even in the same ballpark. In fact, though I agree with the more legit criticisms, overall I actually liked it and thought it got better as it went along.

I'd read nearly every post in this thread over the past couple of weeks, thinking it was going to be some agenda-driven woke-fest Obama conspiracy theory of a movie, and warned my ultra-conservative dad as much, but by the end we were both wondering what the hell some of you have been going on about for four pages now.

You realize that the b*tchy white Karen and the bratty black daughter found common ground in the end, right? And both literally admitted their mistakes/that they had each rushed to judgment? The entire movie - and their relationship, especially - is an exercise in empathy, as heavily underlined by their final conversation in the shed. Same with goes for Ethan Hawke's and Mahershala Ali's characters. They're clearly in this together now, have each other's backs, and by the end, both families are making their way to the bunker in the mansion, having finally learned to trust each other and co-exist, which, morally and thematically speaking, will be the key to their survival.

Coming from someone who can admittedly be far too passionate about movies… seriously, some of you need help with how angry you get over "bad," barely "woke" movies. And how much you can let your anger blind you to the point. I'm not at all saying you have to like the movie - again, I totally the more level-headed criticisms - but some of the reactions here are so batsh*t over-the-top, it'd be funny if it weren't so damn weird.

Your diatribe is the first post on this entire thread to utter the word "woke".

You are so desperate to defend/downplay wokeness in Hollywood that you pulled your hair trigger of anger on an entire thread that didn't mention "wokeness" at all.

We criticize this movie because it is boring, too full of itself, has crappy dialogue, and a freaking stupid ending. In short: because it sucks.

That doesn't mean Hollywood, in general, isn't WAY too woke. It absolutely is.

That doesn't mean Hollywood, in general, isn't WAY too woke. It absolutely is.

There are multiple people in this thread...

A) Complaining that the black daughter is "racists"/speaks ill of white people, and that "the movie was clearly trying to paint her as in the right," while also "pandering to black audiences."

B) Complaining that Obama had an agenda in producing this movie, that it's an "Obama flick," "proof he hates America," etc.

Any way you slice it, those are complaints of wokeness, even if the word "woke" wasn't actually used. To argue anything else is disingenuous at best, gaslighting at worst.

Also, if I were "so desperate to defend/downplay wokeness in Hollywood," I would be defending the black daughter's critiques of white people, and I would be defending Obama, yet I've done neither of those things.

Instead, I'm simply pointing out the fact that the characters RECONCILED in the end and ADMITTED their wrongs/preconceived notions, i.e. the OPPOSITE of what certain people here are complaining about. The entire point is that they all finally came together in the end and are on the same page. In other words, they were ALL in the wrong, which their character arcs very clearly showed, thus the movie is in no way racist, pandering to black audiences, proof that Obama hates America, etc, etc, etc.

Like I said, I totally get a number of the other complaints, I just don't agree that they added up to the abomination so many here claim the movie to be. There is, objectively, a lot of anger in this thread, over a Netflix movie at that, to the point where I was expecting one of the worst movies to ever be discussed on TexAgs. When, instead, what my family and I watched was nothing of sort, and honestly quite entertaining at times (even though, again, I understand why certain plot points rubbed people the wrong way).
