Have you read The Expanse? If so, how does Sun Eater compare?

No, I haven't and it's a huge blindspot for me! For whatever reason, my reading diet definitely tilts towards Fantasy over Sci Fi, and The Expanse is 100% a casualty of that. Something I hope to remedy soon (that and Malazan's Book of the Fallen are mocking me for not having read them).

Expanse may be set in space, but its scope and story are reminiscent of high fantasy imo. Hope you enjoy when you pick it up

Just finished Stephen King's "Fairy Tale". I'd probably give it 4 out of 5 stars today. I'll have to let it ruminate to see if it stays there and not down a notch.

The first 1/3 of the book were EXTREMELY good (The part of the book on Earth) It dealt with losing a parent, alcoholism, an old dog, an enigmatic crotchety old man and a high school kid. This part is 5 stars.

When the book turned into the "Fairy Tale" part, to me the quality dropped. The relationships in the first 1/3 of the book were developed completely, the ones in the last 2/3 were not. Perhaps there were too many characters to do so properly.

I'm glad I read it, but of the King books I've read this year (Salem's Lot, The Shining and Pet Semetary) it is a distant 4th.

agreed. kind of the point of the book....but I didn't love it.
I remember feeling the same way about the middle third when I read it, but I thought the last third was very entertaining.

Read it earlier this year. Really don't remember it well which tells me I thought just ok.

Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut

Re-read of one of my favorite novels by one of my favorite authors.

I just finished Slaughterhouse Five. I'd like to hear anyone else's thoughts on it.

If you're not familiar with the book, the next few paragraphs are going to be really confusing, if not interest piquing.

It seemed more like a long, stream-of-conciousness essay than a novel. I don't think there was a plot. I'd guess that the aliens represented something, but I'm not sure what. There was some serious references to Christianity, one of which seemed very pro, which is surprising. While reading as an anti-war essay, there is also the strong ideat that time doesn't exist in the way humans see it. I'm still pondering that.

At the end of the audiobook, there is a snippet from an interview where Kurt Vonnegut is talking to an old war buddy. They're talking about the horrors of war, destruction, POWs, and death like it was a football game from 20 years ago. Kurt Vonnegut was a POW, and this book was somewhat autobiographical. They laughed! I think that's incredible and a great statement to end the book with. Sometimes life really sucks, like World War II sucks, but eventually, life does go on and there are good things in it.

It is a postmodernist novel, which seems like a fancy way of saying what you just said. Not really a typical plot.

That's a pretty short explanation. I spent a few minutes rabbit-holing (just made that word up, get your mind out of the gutter), and you're pretty much dead-on correct. Thanks.

I'm jealous you haven't read this yet. It's incredible. I read the entire series one after the other. Took me 2 years.

Funny, I bought Suneater yesterday and Red Rising 2 trips ago so after I finish The Licanius Trilogy then I'm going to be picking between Red Rising and Suneater. Probably going with latter.

It's a fun and quick read. I like to use the shorter books to jumpstart myself after a heavy read like a biography or longer sci-fi/fantasy type book. It keeps me from stopping too much between books.

I liked the show. I hope it doesn't ruin the show.

It's not bad. Better than the his book about the moon turning to cheese.

I got through it and I won't read books that I don't like.

Thanks. I'm in the first third of the second Sun Eater book, but I have picked up both the new Old Man's War book and the latest Dan Brown Robert Langdon book. I'm not sure which one to read next.

It's definitely a fun read. I'm a Scalzi fan, so far. However, I've only read three of his books.

I read the first one and really couldn't get into the 2nd. I much more prefer single perspective books.

I ended up liking Kaiju the least out of the Kaiju, Starter Villain, and the Moon cheese book. But I thought all three were a tier below his previous work.

Haha I will 100% read it and I've heard it's amazing! I think the sheer size of Malazan is what has me 'scared' to start it because I know it will dominate my reading library. It's on the list for sure!!

Licanius rules too. I love an epic trilogy (feel like they're hard to find these days) and Islington knows how to stick the landing. You'll enjoy it!

And whether you go with RR or SE, both are superb. RR is more action packed with a cast of characters you fall in love with. SE is a beautifully written slow burn that consumed my imagination. I'm jealous you get to read these for the first time!

I'd go Starter Villian, one of the first books of his I really liked, Kaiju, and Moon cheese.

Have you read Red Shirt? I think that is my favorite Scalzi novel. I need to re-read Old Man's War to see if that one was better.

Yeah. There was something about it I felt off. It was ok. Wasn't as good as hyped.

November will be a busy reading month for me with Strength of the Few and the last Suneater book releasing in consecutive weeks.

Just finished this spy thriller by Kathleen Kent... Black Wolf. Was a good read ... has been many years since last read this genre.

Just started S. King's The Eyes of the Dragon.

I remember Eyes of the Dragon being pretty solid. It was essentially a fantasy story King wrote for his daughter, Naomi. It reads like a bedtime story that he decided to publish on a lark.

Pretty minor spoiler on The Eyes of the Dragon: It has a tie into The Dark Tower, like so many other of his books from this era.

Not done quite yet but wanted to recommend this book for any dinosaur fans. As a new dad, I felt I needed to brush up (no pun intended) on my fossil and Dino knowledge.

Fun book!

People on here love this series and I get a bunch of my Recs from here but I absolutely have not been able to get into this series no matter how hard I try. I have book 3 waiting in the wings but just can't bring myself to bite the bullet and try again. There are so many moving parts I have to do research on the chapters to explain what is going on and how it ties in. Not to mention, every time I get to like a character they get killed off.

I wasn't a fan of Doctor Sleep personally. It's leans even heavier into the alcoholism than The Shining did, if I recall. The book was forgettable.
