I miss reading

Maybe one day this baby will sleep and I can get back to it.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying living vicariously through you guys. See you on the other side.

Hmmm. Not sure why a baby stops you from reading but to each their own.

Work all day
3 week old + 3 year old
"Sleeping" in a few 1-2 hour spurts throughout the night

Not much mental capacity left in the few free minutes I may or may not get throughout a given day

I would read my books aloud to my infants.

^THIS. When they're that little, 'bedtime reading' is easily 'dadtime reading.'

I'm a big fan of what I've seen called the "Techno-thriller" genre.

Love Tom Clancy. I enjoyed all of the books that took place in the 80's (red October, patriot games, clear and present danger..) but I particularly like the 90's (sum of all fears, executive orders, debt of honor, the bear and the dragon.

Michael Crichton- The Andromeda strain, Congo, Jurassic park/ the lost world, sphere, timeline.

Stephen King- 11/22/63. I highly recommend it. My first Stephen king book.

Might want to try Matthew Mather, read a few of his techno thrillers and pretty good.

Did this too. My 9 month old and I also watched Archer.

For real, my son has been an unexpected blessing in that I get a ton of time to read now. It's easy to do with one hand and overall it's a good thing for him to see me doing.

Love techno thrillers but I love the even more niche version of them. The macro geopolitical ones, not the ones that focus on an individual or small team. Truly global stories. It's a guilty pleasure. Larry Bond had a slew of series I read years ago, Red Phoenix, Cauldron, Vortex, etc for example. Loved them. No true central protagonist. Just a series of events and characters to lay out a geopolitical mess that ultimately has armies clashing on open fields kinda books. Books about modern wars that focus on said wars. Getting harder to find for me. Tom Clancy edges this field from time to time but still remains true to his Jack Ryan/John Clark arcs.

Indie authors still permeate this field somewhat but haven't seen an established author take a good shot at it in a while. Anyone know of any?

The Boys in the Boat

Finally got around to this one. What a great book. Deserves the accolades easily IMO. Another one of those I had bouncing around for years and kinda forgot about unfortunately.

I'm through the first two Foundation books by Asimov. I can't decide how I feel about the style yet but I'm into the story enough to keep going.

There is no blue.
There is the state.
And there is you.”

I'm doing the Bible in a year and I'm currently a little over 2/3 through. I was just talking to my son about it and mentioned that I hadn't realized Daniel was thrown in the lion pit on 2 separate occasions.

That sounds about right in terms of how long it can take to get through the Old Testament.

I just looked at these. Never heard of them. Adding to list. FYI - you are likely aware but it looks like he wrote a sequel to Red Phoenix in 2016.

They are good, though admittedly pretty dated now. I think they were all written in the '90s. The one glaring problem with techno thrillers. They don't age very well.

And I did read his sequel but it was pretty bad, ngl. It was honestly weird. It felt like someone else had written it. Completely different flow and vibe to it. The first one is the first I read by him and probably still my favorite so I was pretty deflated by the second. Waited a loooong time for it.

Well, it actually looks like there is a co-author so might not have written it.

Hmmm. I've read most of his Battlefield series and it was fairly hit or miss to me tbh. Their writing just didn't always click for me for some reason. But FE seems to be on KU so eh, I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

Numbers, where all Bible reading plans go to die.

This is the first time I've ever stayed on track, I've missed some days but I'll catch myself up. What helped is:

1) I'm doing the Bible Recap, the host recaps each day, that helps immensely. They catch what I don't.
2) my wife and I have done it together so the ol' peer pressure helped.

In the end, it doesn't matter the speed at which you do it. Just getting in daily, at whatever pace, is awesome.

Finished the last book of the old man's war series that just came out -A Shattered Peace. I enjoyed it. But there was nothing particularly special about it. A solid B if you are a fan of the series and author and worth the time.

Have decided his dialogue and main characters are always pretty much the same. He obviously has a sarcastic, sharp and somewhat flippant wit. Those traits seem to be prominently present in all of his main characters in all of his books, both the one offs and the series. They all pretty much have the same tone.

I tend to enjoy his style and wit, so I'm a fan and generally like his work. I would say the first 3 of the OMW series are his best work and should be sampled. But if his style on any book turned you off, you probably won't like any of his stuff.

Did you do a reread of the previous books before reading the new one? If not, did you have any problems with picking up the story?
This is my next read after I finish book 2 of the Sun Eater series.

Listening to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

I'm curious how much different is for me middle aged versus a teenager.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is my most re-read book. I've probably read it 5 times. I just re-read Restaurant at the end of the Universe last year for maybe the third time. I started as a teenage, also. I remember going to Waldenbooks and seeing that silly cover for a long time before I decided to actually read it. It looked fun, but it was in the big kids' section of Sci-Fi. I wasn't sure I could get into it.

There have been a lot of attempts with other books and series to capture the magic of that book, and some of them are pretty good (Space Team series by Barry J. Hutchison), but the Guide is the original and the best.

Don't Panic.

Well, first time I caught the computer singing You'll never Walk Alone.

I actually did a reread earlier this year not knowing this book was coming. The first three are some of my favorites, so I comfort read those occasionally. I hadn't made it through the second 3, I think because when they first came out he did that weird chapter by chapter release thing and it was too much trouble to keep up with. So I read them straight through.

Honestly, very little about this book ties strongly into the previous, other than the state of war/peace in the universe. Nor does it neatly completely tie a ribbon on the OMW universe to prevent future stories. Basically a story about a character you will recognize but who hasn't been prominent in the the universe.

I'm still wading through the classics. Just finished Candide.

Wondering if satirical farce written before the Declaration of Independence holds up? It sure does.

Really funny throughout. Absurd situations, biting commentary. Nearly 300 years later and tons of it still ring true.

I'm about halfway through the book "It" and it's already messing with my dreams lol. It really stinks when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep due to the thoughts and images from the book lol.

I started reading It when it was first published in the summer of 86. Got to roughly the part where he described the kid being chased through a park at night by the creature from the black lagoon, where I had to put the book down because of my class work at A&M that fall semester. For some reason that sequence stuck with me that entire semester. Picked the book back up during Christmas break, and read the majority of it on Christmas Eve/night. That was a truly freakish book that haunted my nights for a long time after.

Lots of great recommendations in here. I just finished Dark Matter and Recurrsion by Blake Crouch based off recommendations here. Great books although Sci-Fi is not the genre I regularly enjoy.
