I finished "A Night in the Lonesome October" by Roger Zelazny on Halloween night. It's a 31 chapter book, divided by the days, and peope read one chapter per day during October. It has Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, Sherlock Holmes, Jack the Ripper, and a portal opening to the evil elder gods during the full moon.

I challange anyone to suggest a better book for the season.

I've been listening to the audio book of King Sorrow by Joe Hill, and I've been enjoying it so far.

From Goodreads:
Quote:

Arthur Oakes is a reader, a dreamer, and a student at Rackham College, Maine, renowned for its frosty winters, exceptional library, and beautiful buildings. But his idylland burgeoning romance with Gwen Underfootis shattered when a local drug dealer and her partner corner him into one of the worst crimes he can imagine: stealing rare books from the college library.

Trapped and desperate, Arthur turns to his closest friends for comfort and help. Together they dream up a wild, fantastical scheme to free Arthur from the cruel trap in which he finds himself. Wealthy, irrepressible Colin Wren suggests using the unnerving Crane journal (bound in the skin of its author) to summon a dragon to do their bidding. The othersbrave, beautiful Alison Shiner; the battling twins Donna and Donovan McBride; and brainy, bold Gwendon't hesitate to join Colin in an effort to smash reality and bring a creature of the impossible into our world.

But there's nothing simple about dealing with dragons, and their pact to save Arthur becomes a terrifying bargain in which the six must choose a new sacrifice for King Sorrow every yearor become his next meal.

The Dragonbone Chair(Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Book 1) by Tad Williams. Excellent classic fantasy novel. Influenced by LOTR and then in turn heavily inspired ASOIAF. Can't wait to finish the trilogy.

Suneater Book 1 - a little slow but I liked it. Good buildup of the main character and surrounding cast. Fairly isolated in scope. I like that he's earning his backstory and there is heavy foreshadowing of what he becomes. (kind of like Flynn Rider - Eugene - narrating his story of Rapunzel in Tangled). It's a good approach.

I can tell this is just the beginning of an Epoch and Hadrian is just going through his growth cycles in the first book and first part of the 2nd book so far.

I enjoyed the two books I read, had to take a break after book. I will pick it up again before the end of the year though.

This popped up on my audible app. Not sure if it has been mentioned here, but know HP comes up. Might be of interest to fans. I thought about getting it, was a fan and it's been since they first came out since I read them.

Very interesting. Might give that one a try next time I go through them. Jim Dale's version is gonna be tough to beat.

After we talked about HP the other day, I downlaoded the series. This is with new cast I believe but I downloaded the first one just to see how it is, going to start it today when chores start

Tai-pan. I thought it was pretty badass but unfortunately it just kinda ends. Though it seems as though it may be just the beginning for this overall Saga.

I'd read Shogun before many years ago. Do the other books in the saga compare well to these two? I'm down for more…

Finished Raymond Chandler's 'The Long Goodbye.' Took a while to get going, but it's classic detective fiction.

Starting 'The Wager' by David Grann next.

Stone of Farewell(Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Book 2) by Tad Williams. Incredible novel, some of the best fantasy I've ever read. Book 2 was vastly better than Book 1, which was very good itself, mind you. I can't wait to finish the trilogy.

Need a book series rec. I like sci-fi and *some* fantasy. Some of my favorites:

Sci fi - Red Rising Series, Hyperion

Fantasy - First Law Trilogy, Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman

Don't think I'm a fan of typical adventure fantasy like Wheel of Time or Sanderson stuff. I'm more of a dark fantasy/sci-fi guy.

I know I'm all over the place but any good recs?

Fantasy - will of the many , or rise of ranger

Dark fantasy, hmm. Night Angel by Brent weeks? Lightbringer?

Would add old man's war and unrated to sci-fi. I like an independent guy on Amazon - David Welsh. And his Chaos Quarter series.

Honestly though, scroll through this thread and try stuff. Tons and tons of great recs on here.

I'll second both the Ender universe books and The Expanse series.

Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl series.
John Scalzi's Old Man's War series,
Scalzi's Unlocked, Lock In, and Head On books.
Scalzi's Collapsing Empire trilogy.
Hugh Howies Wool, Shift, and Dust trilogy, and the Sand/Across The Sand books.
The Ancillary Universe by Ann Leckie (5 books)
Martha Wells' Murderbot series
Craig Alanson's Expeditionary Force series.

They may not be dark enough for you, but they are worth checking out.
