Agreed. Phil whacked in front of his wife and grandkids, and Tony gets whacked in front of his family after the FBI agent goes to the can, and the hitmen roll in. Also, Tony was about to be indicted and the "family" worried he would flip.

Is the guy who went to the bathroom FBI or the hit man? I agree that Tony is dead in front of his family. The two time that guy came in the scene, first he was followed by AJ so that might have drawn some attention away and second, if he came out of the bathroom (ala The Godfather) to whack Tony, his attention was drawn by Meadow coming in the door.

I thought it was great...50's style diner, boy scouts, loving couple, family headed in the right direction, and Tony gets clipped.

The only question is who and why? Was it New York due to how Phil was taken out (not the fact that he was shot but got run over since he was the boss)? Was it other paries that were worried Tony might flip or was it Paulie due to his resentment of Tony so he could go on with life?(that might be far-fetched but appeared in the last two episodes he wanted to get away)

holy crap. I can't beleive that. I seriously thought my DVR stopped recording. I was getting ready to call my cable people.

Interesting theory that the sudden blackness means Tony is dead. That's a good one. I know there are a lot of people who want to see a movie, but I don't think I do. I think I prefer to leave things as they are within the confines of the TV show. I just feel like movies *******ize things too much.

That diner scene was totally stressful. I just knew Tony was gonna get taken out by someone in that restaurant.

All in all, great last episode. Good ending.

And using Don't Stop Believing...SUCK ON THAT OZ!!!! Chase didn't use a Timberlake song!!! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Some will win, some will lose, some are born to sing the blues...the movie never ends it just goes on and on and on and on...

Utterly perfect. That's Tony's life, right there, in 27 words.

Awesome.

With the open-ended question of "Is Tony dead or not?" makes me wonder about all the people that actually bet on if he would survive the finale.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Great ending - Chase is a greatness - will NOT have a movie here is why

1 - Tony gets killed by the Members Only jacket wearing guy - who wants to see a 120 minute drama without Tony about the family?

2- Tony does not get killed and there is a 120 minute court drama about his Rico case

either way a movie would just be geared to about 1/10 (or less) of the population who would need closure - it could not stand alone and be well recieved by the masses....Six Feet Under will go down as the greatest finale ever - but this was a great ending to a great show

If that was the second to last episode, I'd be lovin' it - it set up a lot to be wrapped up. Instead it's over.
What I liked -
The FBI agent screaming "we're gonna win" - I think it played up the part how many agents end up sympathizing and rooting for the people they are out to get. And if he did have to choose sides, it wouldn't be with Phil.
AJ who thinks he has it all figured out, showing he's still a complete buffoon - first a army officer, then a helicopter pilot, then a CIA guy, then his face lights up at the prospect of being in the movies.
Meadow and Tony's coversation at dinner/coffee.
The whole family back together again with "Don't Stop Believin'" - in the Music of the Sopranos special on HBO, Chase said he didn't stick with a lot of traditional mafia music, he used music Tony and Carm would have listened to - Loverboy, Bon Jovi - and Journey was perfect.
What I hated -
The ending - is Tony dead (makes sense based on the flashback they showed with Bobby and Tony on the boat) is he alive? Don't stop believin' could be saying life goes on and Tony's most important family is all back together and having happy times. That is way too big a swing of outcomes to leave up in the air.
Which way did Paulie go?
What happened to the terrorists?
Will Janice get Junior's money?

If there's a movie - outstanding, but if that's all there is, it'll be hard to watch season 6 again knowing you don't end up with any resolution.

If there's a movie it won't be continuing from that point, it'll be a prequel to the show. That way, all the dead people can return. This will happen if a few years down the road everyone realizes they're stuck in the Sopranos typecast forever and can't get any other work.

Where was that? I went back and watched the opening flashbacks because I figured that would confirm Tony's dead but they didn't mention that scene.

Last weeks episode - after Bobby was shot, they flashed back to Bobby and Tony's conversation on the boat - which was from the episode where Bobby and Tony got in a fight.

It is what it is.

He died.

He lived on.

It's up to the individual.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's really this simple, in my eyes:

There's never been a series finale of a great show everyone could agree was phenomenal. To me, this was just that.

I was biting my nails, sitting on the edge of my couch the final few minutes wondering if this guy would whack Tony, or maybe that guy. Or maybe that guy was coming in to arrest Tony, or maybe Meadow was gonna get it while trying to park her car.

Those are the exact feelings Tony feels on any given moment of any given day. He's constantly watching his back and he knows the thing with Carlo will soon end his life as he knows it, literally or figuratively.

Again, I thought it was phenomenal. I'm going to go home and watch it again, although I suppose it won't be the same without the suspense.
The Dog

Big Al 1992, thanks, I forgot about that. I think that pretty much seals the deal on what happened to Tony. It would be hard for somebody to claim otherwise.

Not really. No one knows.

Yeah, because nothing's ever been foreshadowed on this show and not actually happened. He's definitely dead.

Rudyjax, go ahead and post a theory that relies more on what's been done in the show than "David Chase just ****ed us in the ass".

I'm not going to say that he's not dead, but I'm also not going to say without a doubt that he's dead.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
He wants you to take it for what it is.

It's like any writer, he writes a great novel. A great charcter, like Holden Caufield.

Everyone for the rest of his life wants to know what happens. Many writers say, I don't know. What do you think happens?

He left it that way on purpose.

He could've gotten wacked. It may just go on and on...

He probably did get wacked, but to say nothing else can happen is stretching.
The Dog
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Rudyjax, I'm saying that him being dead is the only thing that makes sense based on the foreshadowing and the abrupt ending. Anything else has to ignore what's already happened.

If you have a suggestion of any other ending that makes sense I'm all ears. It just going on and on doesn't explain the black silence at all.

JC... we don't know what happened and you want me to say what happened?

You know he was whacked and i think he was whacked.

But I don't know he was whacked.
The Dog
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No, try to stay with the conversation. I said "it would be hard to claim otherwise" to which you replied "Not really".

Go ahead and claim otherwise if it's not hard to do. Nothing else makes sense. If you have something that does, I'm all ears.

This ending was pure David Chase. After last week, it seemed David Chase painted himself in corner where he would have to do a traditional ending (dead or flipped) but he comes through and shocks everybody.

The ending was tense. The family all together (just like every other season finale excluding Season 4) but with Meadow running late. The camera focuses on several people walking into the restaurant (the black guys, the guy wearing the members only jacket). Anyone of these guys could be hired to put on a hit (Maybe Butchy double-crossed Tony). Every single viewers mind is running a million miles a minute on whats going to happen. Will the guy come out of the bathroom and pop Tony? Will Meadow join her family and have a simple family dinner? Where the Feds about to burst in on Tony in one of the few good moments of his life in the past year?

By cutting it off, David Chase allowed for all these endings to occur. People will transpose whatever ending they hoped for. I personally think the guy in the bathroom points a gun at Tony as Meadow walks in.

Lots of people are going to hate this ending (I imagine the reviews tomorrow will be scathing by many newspapers). But it fit The Sopranos perfectly. Every week, we look at the teaser for next week and try to predict what will happen. Most of the time we are always far off-base because Chase takes it in his own direction. Everyone was trying to predict the ending and Chase yet again wanted his own original spin on it.

A few side notes:

- It was reported Chase filmed 3-4 different endings. I personally believe all the endings filmed took place directly after the point where the series actually ended. There was probably an ending with Tony getting killed, one with getting arrested, and one with the "happy family" together. NOBODY SAW THIS COMING.

- AJ can never figure out what he actually wants. Organizer, Club owner, Mob guy, Army, now the film industry. He will always be the aimless, little boy of Tony/Carm.

- I think there will be zero chance for a movie. For one, there is no one left (besides Tony/Paulie) for a movie. For another, Gandolfini has stated he wants to put Tony Soprano behind him. He is tired of the character (he acutally said he hated Tony). This ending is like the Russian and the rapist-- there will be no tidy resolution.

- I have always loved the parallels drawn between the Mafia and the FBI. These agents do not have perfect, virtuous lives anymore then the mob guys do. They have their girls on the side and will break rules if needed. Agent Harris has a rocky family life at home from the sound of the phone call at home.

Someone just came up with a few scenarios, what I was trying to say but not nearly as eloquent...

Tony wins- a guy in a member's only jacket may get a date with AJ, but he ain't getting the drop on Tony Soprano-

Rudyjax, but which one of those endings would make sense other than him getting whacked?

Sure it could have been left open but that's depending more on David Chase screwing with the audience than the show itself.

tony may or may not have gotten whacked. one thought i had was that the ending could have been when phil got whacked and the rest of the show was just sort of business as usual, tony conversing with paulie, the family seeing a psychiatrist, aj's continuing problems, tony and meadow having dinner, then the family getting together at the end. chase wants people to believe that someone was in the diner to whack tony, possibly the member's only guy, but that might not have really been the case. we'll never know.
