Nah. He'd disappear off the face of the earth. They wouldn't even waste a body bag on him. But, it's not a good sign for Putin that Russian vets are willing to push back publicly at the risk of being disappeared.

Pertinent to this thread because, were this to go down, it would absolutely impact Putin's urgency and ultimate strategy in continuing to pursue a full Ukrainian takeover and the push to gain a foothold in and beyond Odesa. Moldova was next on his wish list. If it successfully joins Romania, that takes it off the table completely.

This guy could very well be a POW who did this for Ukraine to gain some favor or just another Ukrainian spy type, doing spook things!

Ukraine has used balloons for various purposes for quite a while and has now adapted them for strike missions.

"The strike side of the story broke into view in May when video circulated online of an American-made attack drone falling from a Ukrainian balloon over the front. The clip, which spread across Ukrainian military channels, was the first public glimpse of Kyiv pairing a balloon with a precision weapon.

The drone was a Hornet, a roughly seven-foot, AI-guided strike drone built by the American firm Perennial Autonomy, and already in wide Ukrainian use against Russian supply lines. Ukrainian troops launched it from a balloon that carried it dozens of miles and released it at over 26,000 feet altitude, with the drone just using a tiny percentage of its battery along the way."

I've begun to wonder if an anti-drone firearm that accommodates something akin to an EXACTO .50 round would be the next step in combating drones of this nature. Naturally, you'd have to identify the approach from a bit farther out, and this would be far less cost effective than a shotgun. Just thinking out loud.

Ukraine launches one of its biggest drone attacks since the war started.

"Russia's Tass state news agency said Ukraine fired more drones in the attack than it had during any previous assault in the last year. The Russian Defense Ministry said 660 drones were intercepted. The previous largest Ukrainian attack this year involved 556 drones on May 17.

In 2024, when Ukraine first ramped up its strikes against Russia, it launched 110 long-range drones into the neighboring nation. This year, that number has already surpassed 3,000, according to data published in May.

In recent weeks, Ukrainian strikes have heavily targeted Crimea. Ukraine's Defense Minister Mikhailo Fedorov said he hoped to turn the region "into an island," isolating the long-occupied territory from Russia."

Of course, Putin is now openly summoning Lukashenko to his residence and bluntly demanding that he mobilize as much of the Belarusian army and security forces as possible and throw them into an offensive against Ukraine, toward Kyiv or northwestern Ukraine to cut off supply routes from the EU.

The problem is that Lukashenko is a massive ******* but not an idiot, and he is well aware that his very small, poorly equipped, and completely inexperienced army would, with probability approaching 100%, be wiped out in the forests of northern Ukraine just as elite Russian battalion tactical groups got evaporated there in 2022.

I'm sure Lukashenko probably once believed the BS about the superior Russian military and thought they would easily defeat Ukraine and he'd gain in the spoils of war and be rewarded with loyalty in the new Russian bloc. With Ukraine now winning, Orban lost, and the strengthening of the EU he sees the writing on the wall. He can go down with Putin or remain "neutral" and possibly align with the west later.
