I thought this was a pretty good breakdown. It lays out the financial timeline, what Alex was doing financially, and how the murders sort of helped him.

I still think the murders only gave him a month or so of breathing room but didn't really do anything significant to help him. The financial motive still doesn't make sense here. Those walls were going to crash in eventually and the murders just added complications to it.
