It seems that Phelan and company have all the Dems + a few Rs lined up to elect his buddy Dustin Burrows as speaker.

Patrick discusses it here:

Quote:

The party has repeatedly threatened to censure lawmakers who violate caucus rules by voting for Burrows, which would make them ineligible to run for re-election within the party for two years.

Not in this case.

Burrows and his fellow cabal of Republicans went into to caucus agreeing that they would support the candidate picked by the Republican caucus.

It was only after it became apparent that Cook has the majority support among Republicans, Burrows and is crew walked out on the session and is now cutting deals with Democrats in order to have this same group retain the gavel.

If that backstabbing is not worthy of censure, what is?

I interpretted his comment as censuring is too light of a retalitation tactic against what the RINO's are doing.

The rule is this: Majority party picks the speaker. If an individual wants to be speaker, he gets the majority to support him.

When the majority votes, everyone votes for that candidate.

if you don't, you should get kicked out of your party.

It's time to start throwing fake republicans out of office. They're governing at their own pleasure and not at the pleasure of those who put them into office. This has to stop. Phelan et al are absurd and anti-American.

I disagree. Morgan Meyer, for example, is doing exactly what his constituents want.

Dade's brother was a founding investor in Third Coast Bank. The Phelans are also among the largest landowners in SE Texas. When they started the bank, they owned a property that the bank leased for their branch. It's not some crazy conspiracy.

The bank (which no phelan is on the board of anymore) purchased the bank where Dennis Bonnen was an executive/founder. Again...no conspiracy.

It's very simple. Republicans should vote for the person that had a majority of the Republican caucus support for Speaker. That is David Cook and those are the rules that they all agreed to.

But the Burrows camp knows he cannot win that way, so they have courted and sided with the Democrats to get enough votes. This would be an unforgivable betrayal to the voters that put them in office.

If they go through with this and Burrows manages to get elected Speaker, every one of them should be kicked out of the Party and the Party should go out and find strong, qualified candidates to run in the Republican spot in two years. I doubt if any of the turncoats has the guts to even run again under those circumstances.

This is where Abbott needs to step in as well and get loud. It needs to be clear that anyone that is a Republican that colludes with Democrats to vote for someone other than the Caucus Rep will be kicked out of the Party. He should get some monster donors lined up to say they will back challengers for them. Republicans have a solid Majority in the State House but we haven't been able to get conservative legislation of any consequence done in the Phelan era. That needs to change, this is not what the people have voted for. Forget about Phelan and his cabal as their votes don't matter, go after the 15 other Republicans that are wavering and scare the crap out of them letting them know they are committing political suicide if they don't get on board.

We need leadership.

Correct. Trump needs to lean on this with a couple of tweets and tag Abbott in them. If he lays into it with pressure the others will follow. Drunk Dade and the boys are counting on this flying under the radar, just as it's always done. They want people to keep thinking that as long as the legislature is (R) on paper they will be good to go.

The Texas House GOP is feckless and spineless.

If Democrats were in the majority there is no way they would share power and no way they would not coalesce around a hard core leftist.

Really? So the Dallas consituents wanted Meyer to SAY that he would stand with the caucus decision, vote in the caucus for the first two votes, and only when it became apparent before the third vote that Cook had the votes to carry the caucus.... only THEN to walk out and start courting Dems? THAT's what you voted for?????

Why even call yourself a Republican at that point?

Totally agree. I'm already in conversation with friends in San Angelo. Drew Darby needs to decide where he's going to stand, and publicly defends his decision if he chooses to continue down the Burrows path.

Most I've talked to don't even know anything about the details of what's going on in Austin. Darby seems to be more than happy to keep this under the radar.

The conspiracy is Drunk Dade and Co. (by the way, has Dade ever explained why he was drunk off his ass on the floor of the House?) conspiring with democrats to effectively prevent republicans from governing Texas despite the huge republican majority.

I wasn't aware of the BlackRock and Vanguard influence in Third Coast Bank.

You can bet that there's a ton of money being leveraged behind the scenes to keep the Third Coast Cabal in charge.

This always stunk to high heaven. Now I know why.

Hence "leadership". Abbott is the one who can make or save Phelan because he has the most crossover power.

Trump is also unlikely to get involved in any of this unless he sees his immigration plans threatened but Phelan is smart enough not to mess around with that.

I don't disagree. But IMO, when they start reaching for stupid crap like the Bank they lose the focus. Stick to what matters.

Uh, no. Parties elect their leaders in caucus and then support the winner. That's how things work. Otherwise join another Party or go Dem. Or face the consequences. It's not like the US House where it's a narrow GOP Majority, it's a solid GOP Majority and a conservative mandate. That's what people voted for.

Nope - you follow the rules you voted to adopt and agreed to follow. You don't get to court Democrats when you don't like the results or to prevent the expected results. Now, if you wish to not have to follow a set of caucas rules, you can always choose not to caucus with Republicans. Either way, direct violation of rules has consequences - not removal from office, but it can have consequences for being in a party. All major parties do these types of things around the world. Taking the title, money and support from a party means agreeing to follow their rules. Not a Patrick thing or an Abbott thing...it is a simple thing. I bet you would think differently if this happened in DC...and a small number of Republicans took the gavel by making deals with the Democrats (or vice versa if that is your viewing lens).

I find the strategy Dade and other GOP members are employing to be refreshing. It's a FAFO moment for the cartel GOP who went and primaried the ones who stood by their constituents against the voucher scam. Some of those that lost, supported Abbot and the party 99.9% of the time, but because they didn't align with school choice, they were primaried. Furthermore, their opponents didn't even run on school choice in the primary. Instead, they used outside money and influence to paint the picture that their opponents were pro-trans, soft on the border, democrats. It was all lies. Now Abbot and Patrick are acting like they have some school choice mandate. When you are dishonest and dirty, expect to be repaid with similar tactics.
