As others have said, the benefit here is that no one will be trafficked or exploited to produce content.
My fear is that it will actually amplify the negative effects of porn on the consumers because it will result in a lot more extreme content and further perpetuate the illusion that women aren't real. And it gives addicts even more of a justification to consume more or to not abstain because "it's not hurting anyone." I think this ultimately leads to more destroyed relationships and potentially violence against women and children.
AI is already rotting our brains. This will not help.
Wall-E was supposed to be entertainment, not a road map.
A clever friend was of the opinion that the reality behind the "Star Trek" universe you would probably find was so, was that most of the citizenry basically lived out their lives in holodeck homes something like the Wall-E scenario. Only the truly unusual and adventurous wanted the `actual' of going out into space and serving in Star Fleet. It made alot of sense. A society like that would not necessarily have a high overhead.
Thats exactly where we are headed. Its the solution to automation putting people out of work and being able to live on "minimum wage" or a UBI. It's already happening with at home streaming, video games, social media, etc.
It WILL create a class based society - those that can be happy with living a mostly virtual life, and those that can't (or won't).
Excellent tie-in. Very much inclined to agree. In fact, it will also play into age a bit too. Have noticed these days that one of the things that make the growing "deprovement" more endurable or at least a trade-off, is the quality of what can be done remotely. Its even more noticeable with olds --- you can't move around much anyway, but more than ever some considerable interaction and even creating content like writing or commentary on matters is possible.
You mention UBI. The other place this impacts is the dollars ceiling. It doesn't cut off access to things as much as it used to, but the problem is it is still second hand. Yes, you can now truly tour a place accurately without ever going there, but its still not real with the intangibles that would have. Now for anlaysis, its great because the sounds, scents, etc, don't matter as much.
So when he came up with this interpretation, thought, you know that rings pretty true. If you think of how many just become "lost and feeling useless" in retirement because they didn't have any individual pursuit/interest it makes sense a large number of Federation citizenry just live that way. The whole idea of having some unique call or task is actually not that common.
Certainly are not in the ranks of those who rule out UBI on feasibility grounds. We are approaching a future where no one will even know if something is working or not so there won't be much difference in whether it is practical or not.
