"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

It had to have been airborne. It looks like it crossed a highway, RR tracks and a canal before contacting the buildings.

Even in the new video in who?'s post above it doesn't look airborne at all.

It was:

Probably already at the commit point and couldn't do anything. Engine probably went right as they rotated, and there's no GOOD way to stop.

Hard to tell. The nose was up. Maybe a couple of feet airborne

Seems like it was briefly airborne, dragged part of its structure through that UPS building, and then crashed just beyond the building…

N259UP was originally built in 1991 for Thai Airways. UPS acquired it in 2006.

A couple of early reports are that the aircraft was coming out of a 2 hour maintenance delay on the Lft engine and that part of the engine appears to have separated from the wing as there is a large piece of engine debris on and adjacent to the RWY during the takeoff roll

Looks like it went down right into the GFL environmental yard ("Petroleum Recycling" plant).

I just heard a first responder on a scanner say they were containing an oil spill on a street, trying to keep it away from the fire.

Not an aviation expert by any means, but hard to argue that's anything other than a mechanical issue (not say an "air traffic control" issue)…

We have a refusal speed. VRef. If you are past it you take it airborne and take your chances in the air or run off the runway and die there.

***** REQUEST *****

Please remember that there are folks on this board who will be very close to this (As in - most likely know the pilots close)

Let's try to keep the comments and speculation a little more on the rails than we did with the Air India 787 crash thread.

Thanks and Gig 'Em!

I think you mean V1. Vref is approach

Seeing this making the rounds. No reason to think its fake, but never know these days.

Mayor/Governor press conference coming up any minute.

Hopefully their (D) governor doesn't make it political.

Must have been a super violent engine explosion that destroyed the flight surfaces. The remaining 2 engines normally would have no doubt allowed the plane to climb out.

The airplane sat at SDF for 3 days (back in the air yesterday) and for a month and a half in SAT. Hopefully not a bad maintenance issue.

No politics in the press conference, but the idiots keep saying "250,000 gallons of fuel" on the aircraft.

The MD-11 carries a maximum of 38,615 gallons or 258,721 lbs.

Edit: Someone finally corrected the fuel numbers.

Damn. That driver had the right reaction on two counts though. What looked like unplanned hard right *away* from heading toward it, and then call to call the Fire department. Smart.

It is refusal in the military. Did my flying in the Air Force. 20 years. I'm old but I ain't that old yet. i know what we called it for 20 years.

Refusal speed, often denoted as V_ref, is a critical parameter in aviation that indicates the highest speed at which a pilot can safely abort a takeoff and still bring the aircraft to a complete stop on the remaining runway. This speed is essential for ensuring safety during takeoff,

Ah, I'm an idiot. I was thinking some sort of aeronautical maintenance codes…

Absolutely amazing it had enough thrust to push through impacting 2/3rds of that building clearing the last 1/3 before final crash. Yeah I would say it didn't need that engine, but that engine failure caused other significant damage.
