I'm bullish. The reason being is that I just earned myself a pay raise of a little over 20k.

Let the good time roll.

You're excited about a ~1% pay raise?
Or is that your biweekly pay increase?

Hourly of course.

Just got out of a call where exec said if we don't adopt AI quickly and correctly we'll potentially have to double the current employee count.

Clearly for executives, employees are a bad thing. This is going to get very ugly.

Because LinkedIn is the barometer for the job market.

It's pretty clear the MSM and Dem talking points messaging is out there and it's "everyone I know has been laid off!!" and "It's really bad out there"...because it's picked up noticeably in the last month, or about the time the Gov shut down which the Dems/MSN are desperate to blame on Trump.

This is what is infuriating. So many benefits going to deadbeats, illegals and non-citizens. Yet there will be no real relief for those who find themselves out of work or forced into early retirement...people who have always done things the right way and paid into the system their whole lives. It's truly infuriating.

I hate that about this country. How loose we are with entitlements to absolute cretins and deadbeats. How we always give the middle finger to the middle and working class.

Its because the ruling political and press class are basically unaccountable because they run interference for each other and their very destructive self-serving agendas.

Why would you not want more manufacturing brought back here?

BECAUSE TRUMP!!!!

This is the underlying issue. Its too expensive to hire in America. Not just the salary, but the benefits that go along with it. It is far cheaper to outsource/offshore. And guess what execs are going to do?

I don't know anyone out of work, but it is an absolute bloodbath in Tech.
If you get fired/laid off, you are screwed.

It's been this way for about 4 years now, but really bad with a lot of H1s in the market. The Biden administration faked data, but the chickens are gonna come home to roost during this admin if nothing changes.

Just got a notification from buddy at one of my former vendors. He got laid off today.

Seems like many companies are trying to WalMart their way to profitability. Squeeze every penny out of the process. That is tough for employees of companies where the main expense is people.

Oil has always been boom and bust. My Mom had some friends in Midland. That husband was in the junkyard business. He had a crap ton of pipe, drilling pipe. Market came back and he was a millionaire almost overnight.

Need to get rid of certain mandatories. Workers need to be able to waive certain expectations in return for work if they want to. This making employers pay for everything not related to the job is not the most constructive of trends. If its just incentive, fine, but there seem to be various legal barriers and impositions. Like some of the issues with part-time work.

He's probably right at 40 but not 20 years. The company is relatively new - <10 years old, but I think he's been there since the start.

What industries are they in? Are they in their 20s? How long have they been working? Details matter.

I can speak to my circle of folks right now..

Every industry (outside of aviation)
40's and 50's all white collar jobs
Tons of quality work experience, performance and all bachelor's and / or master's education levels.

There's no downplaying this. Things are really, really bad.

Well, thanks for your input. I was really hoping the OP would answer. I have a feeling most of his friends are younger at the very beginning of their careers.

I personally don't know anyone out of a job all the way from their late twenties to 70s. But I guess it just depends on where and what you're doing.

Okay that sucks. Cannot ever get pensions from a company much anymore. My Granddad worked for Humble, Esso, Exxon for 40+ years. He pulled that pension until he was 88 when he retried at 65 because he was forced to. He ran a farm for another 20 years, doing more physical work.

I work in Tech, and we are under constant rolling layoffs at this point. LinkedIn is littered with 'Open to Work' in all sectors of tech. My company specifically is targeting people 45-50+... many with 20-30 years experience with the company. They've decided that layoffs are cheaper than early retirement packages. These jobs aren't going away, but they are getting moved to Taiwan and India.

Or maybe he's in an industry that is doing just fine,

And lives in a neighborhood where people are just fine,

and the people he is around are similarly just fine.

It's a biased sample either way.

I, likewise, don't know a single person out of work.

To assume it is because people have a very small circle of friends/family/co-workers seems more like a projection of your irritation that someone is offering entirely different anecdotal evidence.

Let me guess…..prior service … and/or 20-40 years old?

I think, and this is probably going to ruffle feathers, people don't want to work. I've hired dozens of young guys over the years that have potential to make 200-900k a year if they just do the work….and they quit. Because it's hard. They have to get out early. They have to work past dark. They have to be UNCOMFORTABLE for a while and pay their dues to learn the job.

If you are currently seeing people out of work, it's because they aren't willing to do what it takes to work. Simple as that.

You don't have to be MF Barnes, you just need to try a little.
