Typically that's because long guns are used in mass shootings and those are the weapons they want confiscated (first) because those are the most useful at resisting an oppressive government and they're scarier to many Americans who only have a handgun or shotgun so they're the perfect entry vector for their confiscation tactics

Has anyone seen anything on a timeline of the police response? So far all I've seen is that the first 911 call was 4:05 pm, and that the university sent out the first alert at 4:22 pm. Nothing about how long it took for the first police officer(s) to get to the shooting location.

Brown apparently has its own police department (officers are 'special police officers', with police power only on campus and immediately adjacent streets), so there should have been officers on campus, and the campus is tiny, so the response time SHOULD have been relatively fast, at least from the time of the call going out over the radio.

But there's still the mechanics of call to 911 -> police dispatch -> officers, which does take at least some time.

IF what that dude is saying is actually true, that's unacceptable. If I'm a parent/customer of that University, I stop payment on any tuition/room/board payments I've made plans to pay for 2026. I can't go to HEB without at least 40 to 50 cameras capturing me spending on inflated groceries. "No video"?! I call bull**** .

Yeah that seems very very strange, if there really is 8000 cams then their should be video somewhere- sounds fishy

800 or so, not 8000. Although that is in a fairly small area - Google says 146 acres, of which 76 are sports fields. My rough swag says that's about 1/4-1/3 of the area at A&M bounded by Bush-Wellborn-University-Bizell.

But placement and direction matter a lot. If there weren't any inside the classroom or building where it the shooting took place, it could be difficult to find anything useful. All the shooter has to do is run out with all the other people running away. Plus it's December in Rhode Island, so having a jacket or hoodie with the hood up isn't out of place.

If there are no guns visible, how do you tell the shooter from anyone else?

Also, how good are those cameras? From personal experience an awful lot of the security/surveillance cameras have truly pitiful image quality. The cameras are no great shakes to begin with, and then lenses or lens covers get scratched, fogged, dirty, etc and don't get cleaned/maintained.
