Their leader was indicted under the Biden administration for one.

Like the old Saddam days when polls closed and the result with Saddam winning 97% of the vote being reported within 90 minutes after.
Chavez generally had enough support to get him by because he was much better at being a socialist than Maduro. Their country was declining but tons more citizens were getting govt money and aid. He also knew how to speak to the hearts of the people.
Maduro possesses none of those skills. Don't get me wrong, Chavez was bad and started the downward trajectory but **** hit the fan truly after Maduro took over.
I don't know if people in the west truly understand how bad the crisis in Venezuela was and is. We cannot comprehend 120+M people closing up and leaving here forever, taking what they can and saying goodbye to what and who they couldn't. This would include your family members, friends, colleagues, everyone.
And then those of us who stay basically deal with limited electricity, food, commerce, and just get by day to day while the elite on the govt's teat parties in the capital. But hey, you get cheap beer every once in a while to keep you happy.
That's the reality over there.

seems like we are on the same path. Wife's father had a profitable coffee 'finca' that the govt basically seized and just left to rot. The worst part is her family has sold 2 farms and a ranch, which they had owned in their family for generations, over the last 10 years to keep consolidating money. Her mom still has a nice (by VZ standards) home and spot in the city but everything else their family has had been sold off. And they are agrarian folks, nowhere near Caracas. Maduro has crippled the country.
