Yeah, it sounds like they've been playing around with Gulfstream certifications, which was stupid for them to do. I am not sure about 'decertifications' but their aviation industry depends a lot on US sales, ours in return not so much.
This is also in response to the Grippen thing. Canada says we won't buy your F-35s. Okay, well now your leading aircraft manufacturer is bankrupt. I have a friend that works on trade things (not related to Canada) but it's openly talked about how condescending and delusional the Canadian delegations have been. Carney is playing Eurocrat games in a country that has 75-80% of it's exports going to the US.
In addition the Albertans know, and I'm sure the Trump administration has made clear, that if they vote for independence and the Canadians don't negotiate in good faith, they can just declare independence, the US recognizes it and says oh hey we'll sign this trade agreement, and guarantee your sovreignty. No statehood needed.
Canada at that point is absolutely f'd.
They can't take Alberta back by force. They will have to recognize it or their entire economy stops. Not just US goods but anything being shipped from west to east stops. And then if they get feisty you stop and inspect ships at the canal. Now they're wholy dependent on goods shipped from Europe. There are no rail lines OR highways north of Alberta that connect. So now BC is completely isolated. An attempt to throw out their independence might lead to referendums (and/or crackdowns) in SK, MB and the Yukon. At that point Canada is completely fractured and unable to function.
The sad fact is that Carney and Ottowa are acting as a hostile nation. It's not particularly subtle. I'm sure Smith knows that the smart play is to slow roll this and support from the side. If Alberta votes to go, which I'd say is a 60/40 against, Canada as it has been known is gone.
