The hatred for Canada and Carney by Trump and the Trump base is odd.

Mark Carney has proven numerous times to be one of the wisest, smartest, most sensible, capable fiscal managers and leaders on the planet.

He is the main reason Canada suffered very little economic harm compared to other G20 nations during the worldwide Great Recession.

Canada has an enormous amount of natural resources. It has historically under-utilized its opportunities to build out its worldwide trade relationships and diversify its export markets beyond the North America region because the USA was adjacent and reliable.

The USA had been a stable ally, friend, and reliable trade partner to Canada since the 1950s.

Trump has changed that relationship.

Carney is a big fan of the USA, but his job is to protect Canada and guide it forward.

So Carney responded to Trump's tariffs and Trump's bizarre delusional threats by charting a new course that will expand Canada's trade into many new international markets.

If the Canadian provinces stick together and stay on the path Carney has put their nation on, they'll go through some economic bumps but will be okay. In ten years, they'll be far better off than now.

Of course, most Canadians are hoping the USA eventually returns to stable leadership and being a reliable trade partner.

But they clearly see the USA is a nation which is no longer stable nor reliable until it gets past its current malaise.

They have experienced some of that same ideological sickness and malaise in their own country, but the majority of Canadians have wisely rejected it thus far.

Good lord. You are going to choke on him if you aren't careful.

Have you delved into the shenanigans they've done to us on the trade front? There was a report / hearing back to Congress on the crap they've pulled that was posted on here a few weeks ago. There is a reason we are ending the trade deal with them.

The animosity and hatred many far-right Trumpers have for the USA's longtime ally Canada -- and for the UK and Europe too -- is bizarre and irrational.

I think it is heavily linked to the animosity displayed when those entities have been asked to pay their share, expect equal treatment in trade or address the real concerns the US has. Europe and Canada have for nearly a century been able to establish an enviable record for their citizens, but mostly on the back of American largest. Especially after the 60s once Europe's economies had recovered.

There is no denying that the EU and Canada are aghast at the thought of having to afford their own defense or to deal equally on trade. Largely because their economic, social and political systems can't afford it. And after the end of the Cold War Europe largely indulged in vanity projects instead of growth. Now they're stuck. And they haven't been shy about hating on Teump, his supporters, Americans in general and are largely ungrateful or antagonistic to American contributions to their way of life.

So I would say that the MAGA response to countries that impede our defense prerogative, threaten or cheat us, or are hostile to a large portion. Of our country is iminately reasonable.

Carney continues to lose for Canada, ultimately. Long post:

Ambassador Greer's comments deserve consideration;

The concerns were discarded by the Canadians.

You should watch the video. Greer said he has very friendly, mutually respectful trade discussions with Canada. The things Tenney listed are a very tiny part of our annual trade with Canads.

And the wine thing was caused by the dumbass Trump tariffs and the threats and numerous stupid childish insults made by Trump, Miller, Rubio, and Vance. Our President did that one to us.

Don't confuse animosity and hatred with frustration.

Canada and the Euros have (rightfully so) been beneficiaries of lopsided agreements with the US, put in place during the cold war. It's long past time for that to end. It's time for them to step up and be good allies. Instead they are both digging in their heels and engaging in civilization destroying policies. Ball's in their court.

I'm mostly indifferent to Canada. They are irrelevant which makes it all the more laughable to read your comments about Carney....as if he's the greatest leader on Earth. Just so completely delusional that you aren't a serious person by posting that.

The UK deserves some hate. Are you not paying attention to their descent into totalitarianism??? My god, man, they are putting people in jail for posting stuff online while letting a third world Muslim demographic systemically rape minors and women in plain sight. Are you seriously so biased that you can't call out your own side?

This is why those of us that are sane and objective have such disdain for your side. You absolutely refuse to acknowledge your sides fault even when they are flat out evil and against everything you are supposedly for.

You do know Canada is in a recession, right? And that the Canadian dollar has lost ten percent of its value against the American dollar in the last year?

If Trump had been as wise, smart, sensible and capable a fiscal manager and leader as Carney, he'd be impeached and there'd be a worldwide recession right now.

Peter Z, a Trump hater, posted the history of Canadian tariffs on US products along with the ask/give date of the associated political event.

From memory things like the US asking Canada to support Gulf War 1 and Canada saying "yes if" they could have an increase in several tariffs.

Canada has never been much of an ally. They only support us in a pay for play way. Contrast their behavior with Japan or Australia and get back to me.

Regarding military policy, methinks that the Japanese and Australians feel more immediately threatened. None of our allies should be expected to do more for us than is in their own interests.

I think that it is also important to remember, specifically with respect to trade policy, that the world has a different shape if your next-door neighbor has a per capita GDP that is 50% larger than your own AND you have lost emigrants to that neighbor in every decade of the last two centuries.

The population of Canada is about 40 million. There are probably 10 million Americans who are "ancestrally" Canadian, including roughly 1/4 of the population of New England.

To quote the immortal wisdom of Robert Earl Keen, "leaving' never hurts as much as bein' left behind."

And then there's the emotional baggage attached to the fact that the majority of the people in government in Canada were born before the Act of Patriation.

The "51st state" bull**** is offensive, precisely because most Canadian adults can remember when Westminster could amend their Constitution.

Why do the libs always show up in these threads with the "staunch ally" BS and they just ignore what these leech countries do? I guess they like Americans getting screwed in trade deals. I'm pretty sure if it was the democrats playing hardball with Canada, they wouldn't care. The TDS is strong in these people.

The difference between alliance and vassalage is material. The former respects that our allies have democratically elected governments to work out their own values.

Japan and in particular Australia have stood by our side for decades, even before the current rise in security needs. But in the short term, I'm sure China will push them further into our arms.
