They appear to be essentially out of both friends, and money alike.

CNN, but they had POTUS on the phone and I don't think they doctored the audio.

Welp, that does it for the regime in Cuba. Marco will make quick work of this one, and I think he is going to do it without a single bomb.

Shouldn't take much at all to topple Cuba. It's already toppled; just have to nudge the leader out.

I think the biggest thing holding it back is a viable plan for what happens after the current leaders are ousted. I've yet to hear anyone in the U.S. discuss what happens next…

Great to hear. It will, as always, come down to cash flow though. Cuba's ruling elite have long used their doctors as indentured servants abroad for cash. Another good indicator of pressure:

Seems close at hand but might take a bit longer, imho.

Bump. Trump mentioned Cuba in QA this afternoon
He basically said "Cuba will make a deal, or we will do what we did with Venezuela, just as easily."

being literal- they indeed are watching and waiting for USA helicopters to fly over and take over. They are praying for it!

They'd need some sort of assistance to really do it, imho.

Cuba is going to be interesting. This one could absolutely be another US Territory situation, ultimately. Not sure how I feel about that.

Yes, they absolutely would need assistance. Their "protests" consist of banging on pots and pans in the street...and for them, that is a major rebellion. They can't really mount any sort of offense to overthrow a government because they have no weapons. Honestly, when you think about it, no one remaining in Cuba has ever lived in a non-Castro world. They don't know how to lead a movement or govern a country. Anyone with any sort of following or ability to lead a movement has been eliminated. They will definitely need help ousting the current government and installing a viable, functioning government.

It's a huge mess that can only get messier...and it can't happen soon enough.

I hope we insist their leaders step down.

A transitional process with prisoners released in waives, oil provided for electricity, and a commitment toward real elections and allowing opposing candidates finally might be the key.

Of course, reinstatement of property rights would be required for a real economic/embargo agreement, and in truth it would also let the current (elderly, though Diaz-Canel himself is only 65) leadership's families make a ton of cash as well, vs. trying to continue/risk getting deposed etc.

would it even be safe to visit Havana once the commies are defeated?

between just normal poor criminals and ideological enemies of the USA.

will it ever return to the way it was in 1965?

we can NOT let the current commies stay in power.

no way.

they should be forced to step down just like we had a new leader in Caracas

These are the men that were in the room during the announcement. The man in blue is Raul Castro's grandson. They call him "The Crab" and it seems he may have a big role in this. I'm not clear on whether his intentions are to protect his grandfather and maintain power or if he is just trying to make sure Raul can quietly live out his final years.

1965? Don't you mean 1959? (Although Batista was dictator when Castro overthrew him.)

Thx. He was tied to that 'mysterious' Learjet crash that some speculated was CIA-like sabotage in December.

My hunch from what little I know about him is he seems to like having and spending money. While his family has plenty, of course, if he wants to get richer a transition to a participatory Cuba vs. an isolated one might appeal. Note he's been talking to Rubio directly for around a month at least now, and likely that started just after the Maduro arrest, imho.

I kinda chuckle at the prospect of them having negotiations in Spanish together.

There sure are a lot of fat guys in that picture for the amount of food insecurity there is in Cuba right now. But I guess most communist states the government eats like pigs while the rest starve like lil Kim in N Korea.

While I agree…..there is still much work to be done e in Venezuela before we do a victory lap. Chavismo is still in place as well as their communist constitution.

Delcy Rodriguez is playing the wait and see game. So is China.

Mao, Stalin, Chavez/Maduro all of them had pot bellies. Well fed and under-exercised evil men.

Should be night 8 coming up. Cubans have taken to burning the trash the regime can't or won't collect for lack of fuel.

I bet there is a ton of money in Florida that would be invested under the right conditions. There are generations of Cuban-Americans who would like to reclaim their homeland.

I would favor it being a free country in it's own right, though I recognize that politically it would make for a fine US territory/state as well probably, which is why Democrats will be apoplectic if that is ever proposed. Cubans have a strong national identity and I would expect a fiery independent spirit to be maintained looking ahead.

They really do have a strong national identity…thank you for acknowledging that! Cubans have never viewed themselves as refugees. Rather, they see themselves as exiles. My father last left Havana DAYS before Castro overtook Havana and was never able to go home again. He died a few years ago at the age of 96, still vowing that he would return home again. I made that happen in 2023 when I took his ashes back to Cuba. Not exactly the homecoming he dreamed of, but home nonetheless.

Many people inside Cuba are actually fearful of becoming part of the United States. They just want to be free. I hope it is finally going to happen.

That sounds very similar to Celia Cruz who performed at Guantanamo in the 90s so she could briefly be back in Cuba. She brought a bit of dirt back from Cuba to be buried with in New York.

I don't think my FIL would ever go back. He left probably 50 years ago and refuses to celebrate his birthday. He instead celebrates the day he left Cuba.

Having said that, I think his mind could MAYBE be changed if there's a new government in power. My wife's parents left a long time ago. But, like most that left, they still have siblings, cousins, etc that are still there.
