I think you mean 1959, and it is actually safe to visit now. You might be uncomfortable with no electricity and you might not get your first choice of food at a restaurant, but Cuba is very safe. Cubans aren't allowed to own guns, and the consequences for harming tourists are dire. The Cuban people do not see the U.S. as an enemy…only the Cuban government does.

A lot of protests on the eastern side of the island, and Havana are tending toward violence it sounds like.
Economic reforms expected to be announced this coming week apparently.

Seeing a lot of chatter that Cuba is announcing their version of the Soviet perestroika. Reforms, free markets, outside investment, release of prisoners, etc.

Will the public care? Will they even know? No one has power.

When you read the transcript, the announcement was absolutely ridiculous. No one in their right mind would put their money in a Cuban bank or trust the Cuban government to follow through on anything they announced today. No one. They are just trying to appease the U.S. and are hoping something sticks. Anything less than all of their leaders leaving the island is unacceptable.
