#RightNow. Costa Rica's President Rodrigo Chaves is sweeping the floor with the Cuban regime.

"Take your diplomats out of here... enough already, it's time to clean the hemisphere of communists."

Announcement of the closure of the Embassy in Havana.

X translates it, sorry. Havana is dealing with diplomatic setbacks in the hemisphere for the first time in a while (not involving the US directly but I suspect Rubio etc. are pressuring countries to do this).
Quote:

The Cuban regime responds after the announcement of the closure of the Costa Rican Embassy in Havana... they claim it is a decision taken "under pressure" from the U.S.

It is the second diplomatic setback for the regime in just a few days after seeing its officials expelled from Ecuador.

I read last night that the Russians are sending oil/gas (Sea Horse and Kolodon specifically) to Havana, unfortunately. They might get there in 5-10 days or so I guess.

Agreed. They are also 'shadow fleet' ships I think so maybe we interdict them, though I am not sure that is real likely at this point. We don't want even the hospitals in Cuba to go dark (and are seeking Russian cooperation in global oil/gas markets of course).

Have you ever seen footage of the hospitals inside Cuba? Electricity is only one of their worries. With the exception of the hospital in the Miramar neighborhood of Havana (it serves govt officials, diplomats, and some foreigners) they don't even have medical supplies for basic procedures. They operate on a BYOS (Bring Your Own Supplies) policy. Cuban-Americans send supplies to family members so they can receive even minimal care. There are medication shortages and some procedures are even done without pain medications, etc. One night we walked by one of the hospitals close to the Malecon, and the building looked like something out of a horror show. It was probably one of the most disturbing things we saw in Havana.

Are you saying that government healthcare in a communist country is not up to par? I'm surprised by this.

It is a complex situation with a lot of contributing factors, but the "Revolution" definitely triggered most of them.

Unpossible: I was reliably informed by Michael Moore in "Sicko" that the Cuban healthcare system "best in the world". Get with el programme.

I read this today in an otherwise garbage piece/article:
Quote:

Cuba, which is already beleaguered with an obsolete and fragile power system, saw its grid collapse under the weight of the weekslong oil blockade. The Caribbean island nation's energy system uses about 100,000 barrels of oil a day to power aging and 'decrepit' thermal power plants that the country received from the former Soviet Union.

Communists are so utterly pathetic at running anything at all.

The Economist of course can't help but flash their TDS credentials here but the airline cancellations I'd like to see quantified at this point. Why would anyone want to go vacation there right now, when it's less than 50/50 you'd even have electricity?

I'm not going to go into great detail today but the Code Pink et al. Propaganda tour in/around Havana this weekend is likely related to National Network on Cuba, an NGO we of course have paid for, for many years.

Obama, patron saint of subversive communists globally, started cultural mission trips with Cuba in April 2016 after his own pilgrimage to honor the Castro regime. More at the thread.

Another nationwide blackout in Cuba overnight:

But don't worry everyone, the state hotel with the Code Pink sympathizers is still powered by a generator. Nothing around it though.

There is nothing complex about it. The commies could not manage a lemonade stand, much less a nationwide healthcare system.

The net positive over getting this Cuba thing straightened out and opened up will be the availability of 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air bodies and full running cars that will enter the market.

I saw this posted last night;
Quote:

#Now. Daz-Canel confirms that Ral Castro and his inner circle are directing the negotiations with the U.S.

He states that he is unaware of what the demands of the Trump administration are, but that he would be willing to discuss investments on the island.

I am curious who is really handling the negotiations on the Cuban side. I suspect it is not Canel-Diaz, but rather Ral Guillermo Rodrguez Castro (nicknamed "El Cangrejo" (The Crab)). He's the youngish party guy who likes to spend money etc. This might be creating some of the discord with the Canel-Diaz faction we've seen over the past week.

Quote:

Oscar Prez-Oliva Fraga Ral Castro's 55-year-old great nephew has shot to power since emerging from obscurity several years ago. He became minister of Cuba's influential Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment in May 2024 and was appointed the island's deputy prime minister in October.

By contrast, Ral Guillermo Rodrguez Castro Ral Castro's grandson has never occupied a government post, having served as his grandfather's bodyguard and later as head of Cuba's equivalent of the U.S. Secret Service. He has long been known as "Raulito," or "Little Ral" and is new to the spotlight cast on high-ranking government officials.

But he made news last month when he secretly met on the sidelines of a Caribbean Community summit in St. Kitts with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. At the time, Rubio refused to say who he was speaking to in the Cuban government.

"The role Raulito is playing right now is the connection between Ral Castro and whoever is on the U.S. side," said Sebastin Arcos, interim director of the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University. "He enjoys the absolute trust of Ral Castro."

But, Arcos and other experts argue, even should someone with the Castro pedigree take the presidency, little is likely to change.

"Party leadership doesn't mean anything in Cuba," Arcos said. "The party is just a hollow faade. The real power resides in the military, under Ral Castro."

The 94-year-old remains at the helm as general, appears at key events and is considered the most powerful person in Cuba, a country subject to more than six decades of absolute rule, first by revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, and then for the past decade, his younger brother Ral.

I think things could in fact change fairly rapidly, but would love to see anything confirming my hunches.

Conservatives should use Cuba as an example more than we do. It's the perfect case study of what life is like under communism/Marxism. Conservative professors should teach this in the university.

the more important question from much of the Trump Administration should be:

"how long until wealthy American males can safely enter Havana and date beautiful Cuban women?"

I don't think I've ever done a 180 on a politician like I have Rubio in a positive direction. There is a LONG list of politicians who I initially liked who turned out to be compete losers (eye patch most recent example).

He went from this nervous dork with no real backbone in his policy positions:

To a complete bad ass in like 10 years.

He's leared a lot. He's doing a good job of first assessing the veracity of the media's question before responding. Perfect approach to handle the media in 2026

Cuban counter-intelligence has long been very effective vs. what they spend on it, imho. It's a quite real target, imho.

Mexico's Sheinbaum presidente has indicated she is going to ship more fuel oil to Cuba, apparently in defiance of Trump (presumably her drug cartel bosses gave the order). Will just have to see when that crosses Trump's radar screen what his reaction will be.
