I bet all the Czech folks are really appreciative of the sense of home with the authentic jalapeño sausage cheese kolaches at Buc-ee's

except they're probably annoyed that we call them Koaches and not Klobasneks

No, they're just confused since they've never heard of or seen a klobasnek.

Also, being overly impressed by Longhorn Steakhouse is just sad.

Saw one yesterday about how Brits thought Golden Corral was great. I didn't even think there were any Golden Corrals still open anywhere.

Count me in as preferring Praseks over Buccees. Never have a problem finding a pump at Praseks compared to Buccees, plus they are nicer, have better food, jerky, baked goods, etc.

I've been to Europe a few times but never really had a problem with their food. But now that i think about it, if asked for my favorite European meal, i don't really have an answer. I'm guessing they are not big on seasoning over there and have a lot of bland dishes and that's why they're blown away by our strong flavors. It's been fun to watch their reactions. They're not going to want to leave!

Brits in particular have a phobia about food contamination. As in, any steak with a shade of light pink in the middle is the same as raw meat. Have no knowledge of probes for internal food temperatures needed.

Saw a video about Queen Elizabeth II had that phobia. Wouldn't eat Beef Wellington for that reason. Then again, as Queen, she had a ton of food rules as she never ever wanted to be less than completely proper when eating. Nothing with sauces that might drip. Pasta dishes had to be barely sauced, no noodles ever, penne or other fork efficient types she could eat individually. No soups, nor stews. Even her salads had no dressing. Roasted potatoes bite sized pieces only.

My boys love it. We go a few times a year. None of us order steak because why would we do that when I can grill much better at home.

Longhorn has a good chop steak, good okra, and the chicken strip plate is at least two meals for a normal person (and its good). Nothing wrong with Longhorn.

Flew back to Austin from London on Monday. Tons of folks heading over for World Cup. Had some fun conversations. One thing they love the most about the US, and for good reason, is we have ice everywhere. And it's free and it's expected with your meal/drinks.

Spent a good amount of time in Europe the last few years. I am not a fan of the food in general except in Italy. I think what gets them the most whether eating out or shopping is simply the sheer amount of choices available for consumers. That is definitely not common in Europe.

Honeymooned in Italy and thought the food in Rome was forgettable. Venice was bad. I didn't appreciate anything I ate until arriving in Florence and getting a steak and Osso Buco.

Not so sure about that. They keep choosing to walk in the heat for long distances. Can be eating a crap ton of calories but losing a lot of water weight...until they find a place with beer, that is. We drink Gatorade to rehydrate. They drinks pints.

Nandos was my favorite meal in the UK. Well, that and some lasagna from an Italian restaurant in Harrods.

It could technically happen…but I believe the odds are low…

It can? Have watched two streams that are basically FIFA World Cup for dummies today and still don't understand how the seeding works until the knock out rounds, as they are called? I mean I'm trying to understand but there are so many rules and options. Losing a game is not bad, until the time comes when losing a game means the team is finished at this World Cup.

Please bear with me for asking dumb questions.

It can't happen, at least not now that the US has won its group (I'm not going to look at what could have happened). The US's path is set as the group winner. If England wins their group, they will be on the opposite side of bracket and could not meet the US until the final. If England finishes second in their group, they could face the US in the quarterfinals in LA on July 10. If they finished 3rd, they would be on the other side of the bracket.

I'm gathering that Europe sucks. I am not big on sight seeing and not a history buff, so no reason for me to ever visit Europe.

The food in Europe is amazing. They just don't have choice, like we are used to. If you're in France and specifically the area of France, pretty much 80-90% of restaurants will serve the same menu. That's pretty much true everywhere except the major major metros which will be more like we are used to.

In DFW (or any major city in the US), you can get amazing variety. You can go to small town USA and there is typically a lot more variety of cuisines.

The quality of food in Europe is, as you say, quite good, but I would agree that choice is less varied, particularly in France and Italy where they are understandably proud of their own cuisine. Their dining habits are traditionally different from ours. Even though fast food has made huge inroads in Europe, there are still lots of things we take for granted that they find surprising when they come over here, like free refills for drinks.

ETA: a couple of 1970's soccer references you might not get, "Nobby Hegel" is a reference to Manchester United player Nobby Stiles, and Franz Beckenbauer was the captain of the West German team at that time.

It was more entertaining when it was videos of European influencers pretending to be shocked by American hospitality/establishments and not a contest to see who can take a bigger dump on various american chains.

One thing I'm surprised they haven't mentioned. Service. Here, your server comes back frequently without request. You don't have to wave them down for another drink or to get a check. That drove me crazy in Europe.

I lived in Germany for a year as a high school exchange student back in the mid 90s and then went back for about 4 days in 2014. Not a lot had changed in that time. There was one grocery store at the outside edge of town. It was about the size of a mom and pop grocery store in small town Texas.
Most people biked into the town center, made stops at the butcher, farmers stand, bakery, etc.

I thought the food there was wonderful but as others have said everyone has the same menu. They drink a ton of warm sparkling water and dont seem to care that much if the beer isnt cold. No ice in your drinks, you had to pay for every ketchup pack at McDonald's, and if there is an empty seat at your table someone will ask if anyone is sitting there and then just sit right down and ignore you.

You could drink alcohol at 16 but not drive until 18. Festivals were lots of fun and if you still had a half Stein of beer and it was timecto go you just walked out with it and got on the train. All over the city you run into little kiosks selling brots in rolls which are delicious.

My family had people come by and deliver milk, beer, and bread every week. Vending machines had beer you could buy. If a movie was over 2hr you got an intermission so you could go to the bathroom and get another beer or snack.

Then they found the grocery stores.

Five of them within one mile.
Each one the size of an aircraft hangar.
Burgers. Steaks. Brisket. Ribs. Pulled pork. Lamb. Veal. Every cut of every animal ever domesticated by human civilization available in one refrigerated aisle at ten in the morning on a Tuesday.

The Germans stood in the meat section for forty five minutes.
In silence.
Processing.

They finally understand why we do not have trains.

We have roads wide enough for the cars we actually drive.
Parking lots the size of small European countries.
Airports in every city worth visiting.

A few things are pretty dumb/fake here.

The grocery store I shopped at in Germany was about the same as the grocery stores I shop at in Texas. The idea that Germans would be awed by a meat counter is dumb.

The idea that they'd be impressed with our roads/highways is dumb, as Germany has very nice highways, largely nicer/better than ours. Same goes for airports for the most part.

Really, I was in Germany a month ago. Stopped at several different grocery stores. The stores are a fraction of the size that we're used to in Texas, I guess Aldi stores in Texas would be a good comparison. Even with the reduced space, the shelves were short, I could see over them into the next aisle. The options in the produce section were really limited, I didn't spend any time in the meat department, but options in the rest of the store was also very limited.

Yeah I don't doubt you found some small grocery stores. Where I was outside Stuttgart, there was a small store walking distance from my apartment. This is it, check it out on Google Maps. It is indeed smaller than a typical US "supermarket".

https://www.netto-online.de/filialen/stuttgart/filderhauptstr-47/7931

Generally though I would make the 5 minute drive to the larger grocery store nearby, which in my opinion is very similar to most US stores. Here it is.

https://capurso.de/maerkte/marktkauf-capurso-filderstadt

Check it out on maps. The main difference is an escalator leads to an upstairs department store. Not big enough? There's a wholesale/costco style store literally next door.

Most of these "World Cup visitors wowed" social media is engagement farming nonsense. Turns out telling people what they want to hear get a lot of attention.
