No, you can pickup and move objects while not in build mode. Just look at it and hold the button you would normally use to add it to your inventory and then just free look around to place it somewhere. You dont have to be in build mode near a settlement.

I've been putting a ton of time into the castle, I just about completely ranked up from a 35 to a 36 just by building on it. I might take some pictures but it would be crappy cellphone shots of the tv since I'm on the Xbox.

Can't believe I haven't been on this thread. I'm up to level 36 right now. Literally cannot put this amazing game down. The view from the front gate, which is the only way into the castle. Note: lots of turrents for protection (146 I think right now).

Scrap everything in sanctuary and link it to the castle using the local leader perk under charisma. The primary materials for the structures and the second floor are just wood and steel. The electric stuff is a pain because you need a ton of ceramic to make slot of the conduits and such. Also scrapped just about everything at the red rocket truck stop and the drive in settlement and then use myself and dogmeat to carry the materials to the castle (multiple trips of fast traveling, didn't get over encumbered).
