Given the advent of Twitter and other online content, sports radio is more entertainment than hard hitting facts or analysis. Too many other sources to get "Breaking News" now than radio.
Brutal. I was in the sports radio industry for about 7 years. It's truly a brutal, brutal industry. I don't miss it.New World Ag said:
Charlie Pallilo writes about losing his showQuote:
It's not quite an elephant in the room, but one paragraph on why you are reading me on SportsMap Houston but not hearing me on ESPN Houston 97.5 FM. Essentially, an outside consultant was given license to make some changes. Replacing me was one of his changes. I wasn't pleased with how it went down, but life happens.
hence, why his show was a failure....Stat Monitor Repairman said:
CP got that one old guy that calls in at least once a week to talk about some obscure Astros topic nobody cares about.
It could be superbowl week and this mf'er calling in to talk baseball.
Charlie not only takes the call, but he'll spend a whole segment with the dude.

FWIW 610 is crap these days and 790 isn't too far behind them. I do enjoy listening to the Matt Thomas show. I also enjoy Michael Conner during baseball season, but that is where it stops.
610's constant Texans talk about the practice team 3rd string punter during baseball season is brutal, and 790 in the afternoon with the A team is terrible.

No love for Joel Bushbaum?
I'd rather poke my eardrums out with a pencil than listen to Vandermeer. He's terrible as a play-by-play guy and I can only imagine how bad he would be as a show host- there's no way to scream forced catch phrases into an actual show and that's that pony's one trick.Chewy said:

10:00 - 12:00 - Mark Vandemeer (just filler)
12:00 - 3:00 - Jim Rome (Sean Pendergast was just riding around HTown selling cellular equipment dialing it up)
3:00 - 7:00 - Rich and Charlie

I like Vandermeer as a play-by-play guy. But yeah he wasn't a good talk show host.Booma94 said:I'd rather poke my eardrums out with a pencil than listen to Vandermeer. Fred and I worked together for almost 12 years. I spent more time with him than I can count. Fred was a great guy. He had his flaws, and he knew them. But he always meant well and ALWAYS went out of his way to help out his friends.

Fred was always so very nice to me every time our paths crossed. We had fallen out of touch over the past several years for no other reason other than that can happen in this biz. I regret that. Sending love to his family during this difficult time… #RIPFalcon pic.twitter.com/pbCfiTol8e

Didnt get a chance to listen to Coach Slocum on a Mobile back in its hayday but have heard a few of the clips. My favorite was a line about how Tech's sparkly helmets reminded him of a bass boat.
yeah I wonder too very concerning for meTone2002 said:
I wonder how much longer John Granato is going to hold on.
the problem is every time John and Lance have split up they inevitably end up together again. they just work best together. my bet is Lance is going to try and move up the nfl.com chain.Milwaukees Best Light said:
His wife took a high paying job in LA, so he is living half the time there and doing the show remotely. Not sure how long that is doable. His kids are done with college, so he might hang it up soon. Lance has like 13 kids, so he is not hanging anything up soon.

I think that was right before divorce because the next week he went on a classic 'i hate my wife' rant about that long car ride... it was so uncomfortable even Granato was trying to get him to ease up... man that was a long time agomaroon barchetta said:Milwaukees Best Light said:

I remember when Lance was married to his first wife and they were going to College Station for a game or something. They tried to take some back way and ended up in Dayton.
Lance was referred to as Rand-McNally for a long time after that.
