Given the advent of Twitter and other online content, sports radio is more entertainment than hard hitting facts or analysis. Too many other sources to get "Breaking News" now than radio.

Charlie Pallilo writes about losing his show

It's not quite an elephant in the room, but one paragraph on why you are reading me on SportsMap Houston but not hearing me on ESPN Houston 97.5 FM. Essentially, an outside consultant was given license to make some changes. Replacing me was one of his changes. I wasn't pleased with how it went down, but life happens.

Brutal. I was in the sports radio industry for about 7 years. It's truly a brutal, brutal industry. I don't miss it.

Pallilo is one of the good ones.

CP got that one old guy that calls in at least once a week to talk about some obscure Astros topic nobody cares about.

It could be superbowl week and this mf'er calling in to talk baseball.

Charlie not only takes the call, but he'll spend a whole segment with the dude.
hence, why his show was a failure....

FWIW 610 is crap these days and 790 isn't too far behind them. I do enjoy listening to the Matt Thomas show. I also enjoy Michael Conner during baseball season, but that is where it stops.

610's constant Texans talk about the practice team 3rd string punter during baseball season is brutal, and 790 in the afternoon with the A team is terrible.

I can't remember the last time I actually listened to sports radio. I found it just way too depressing to hear all the utterly stupid people call in and it made me sad for humanity.

I will say I'll listen to 610 for the 5-10 mins I'm in my truck going to lunch. Just to avoid day time FM radio and hear what they're talking about.

Any longer than that and it's unbearable.

With that said has anyone noticed a decline in the signal for 610? Seems recently for me it gets pretty scrambled.

I will say, from my experience, the people making the decisions with programming are very out of touch with sports. The product as a whole has gone downhill immensely.

It was an industry I couldn't get out of fast enough.

Failure? CP was on air with mostly his own show for like 30 years.

6:00 - 10:00 - John and Lance
10:00 - 12:00 - Mark Vandemeer (just filler)
12:00 - 3:00 - Jim Rome (Sean Pendergast was just riding around HTown selling cellular equipment dialing it up)
3:00 - 7:00 - Rich and Charlie

Thursday was the best when Coach Slocum on a Mobile would call in for his weekly report. I'd spend the next 48 hours so pumped about how much fury the Gulf Coast Offense was gonna unleash on that week's Aggie opponent.

It was a simpler time back then.

Rack him!

I'd rather poke my eardrums out with a pencil than listen to Vandermeer. He's terrible as a play-by-play guy and I can only imagine how bad he would be as a show host- there's no way to scream forced catch phrases into an actual show and that's that pony's one trick.

He wasn't really bad when he first got here. He had a more broad perspective. He was fine filler for a terrible time spot. I usually cranked out work or went to lunch so never really listened to him a lot.

No decent person is sitting in the 10-12 slot for very long so it's never gonna be a strong time.

I like Vandermeer as a play-by-play guy. But yeah he wasn't a good talk show host.

John and Lance are still good I think. I had them on this morning. They still make me laugh.

I prefer Josh Anus over Joel Blank. In a country of 300 million, there have got to be a few better options that will work cheap.

Didnt get a chance to listen to Coach Slocum on a Mobile back in its hayday but have heard a few of the clips. My favorite was a line about how Tech's sparkly helmets reminded him of a bass boat.

My favorite was him saying he loved Tech's new coach, Vince Gill, and his lovely wife Amy Grant.

His wife took a high paying job in LA, so he is living half the time there and doing the show remotely. Not sure how long that is doable. His kids are done with college, so he might hang it up soon. Lance has like 13 kids, so he is not hanging anything up soon.

the problem is every time John and Lance have split up they inevitably end up together again. they just work best together. my bet is Lance is going to try and move up the nfl.com chain.

I remember when Lance was married to his first wife and they were going to College Station for a game or something. They tried to take some back way and ended up in Dayton.

Lance was referred to as Rand-McNally for a long time after that.

I think that was right before divorce because the next week he went on a classic 'i hate my wife' rant about that long car ride... it was so uncomfortable even Granato was trying to get him to ease up... man that was a long time ago
