So just heard on 790 today was Brian la Lima last day. Co host with Sean in the mornings. Anyone know if he quit? Fired?
From my experience in radio.. they ask you to do more and more and refuse to pay you more. Eventually it takes a toll on you.

I grinded it out for about 7 years before I couldn't take it anymore. Wasn't fun anymore. It's just an absolutely brutal industry.

Yeah I heard him yesterday morning say he was taking a job in another industry that pays more.

For reference for those curious about life in sports radio.

I was in my 7th year in radio. I was hosting a morning show for a Fox Sports affiliate from 6am-9am M-F, did various producing throughout the day on top of sales, and at night I did play by play for local colleges and high schools depending on the season.

On the weekends, I was either calling games or producing the weekend content. Typically Sundays were my only chance a day off but that was only if there wasn't random things that needed to be done to prep for the week ahead.

I was bringing in around $35K. I kept thinking my big break was coming but it never did.

It all worked out. I'm in a new industry and doing really well.

Edit to add: my work days typically begun around 4am for show prep and ended around 9pm some days after games in the evening. If I didn't a have a game to call, I was still working 12-13 hour days.

Thats the same story I heard from a guy i know through work whose son had a radio job. Its a grind with not that great pay and you basically have to be the one lucky one to survive all the other recent college comms grads fighting for the top job just to get a chance to hosting your own show. You're expected to do appearances outside of your show hours so now youre looking at multiple 12+ hour days. Then when you do get the show your workload doubles but your pay definitely doesn't. You basically have to be syndicated in multiple markets to come close to cracking six figs. All of this was true before any yahoo with a webcam and mic could become their own podcast host. Then again, you could be lucky enough to become the next Stephen A Smith or Cowherd, but your odds are pretty much slim to none.

Some of the worst people I know were in the industry as well. It's just so bad all around.

And yeah, the days are insanely long. I remember during the fall I would get to the station around 4am-4:30am for show prep and by the time high school football was over and the postgame shows ended I was leaving about 1:30-2am. And then getting right back up for college football content the next morning.

I was off most of last week so I didn't listen to the morning show on 790 like usual, but found out this morning that Sean S is no longer with 790 and got laid off last week. The new show this morning sucked. I cant stand 610 so I guess I am out of luck now.

ESPN 97.5 cancelled Paul Gallant's afternoon show recently. They replaced him with a syndicated Rich Eisen show.

The revenue pie for Sports Radio must be shrinking pretty rapidly with all of the options out there. It's a shame.

LZ and Granato

That's all that's left that is any good.

Feel like Gallant had really evolved into a good host.

I worry about John and Lance. I just can't imagine that Houston Powder Coater and Chastang Ford ads are enough to pay the bills.

That was the switch I made. It sucks cause I really enjoyed SS in the mornings before switching over to TexAgs radio.

Edit: Found my answer in his twitter mentions. He isn't done yet. Sounds like something is in the works.

97.5 is honestly pretty great form 7-noon. John and Lance are great and offer some foolishness. Dell and Sean from 10-noon are my favorite. They are witty and sarcastic. Listen to all daily in the background

Let's be honest - radio in Houston killed itself - you stated alienating 90% of the sports population with everyone talking about the same thing all the time plus you stopped taking phone calls

When sports radio first hit the scene here you had live updates constantly - they covered more than just Texans, etc and a lineup where hosts were more diverse on what's going on around town

I listen to the Junkies on 106.5 out of Washington DC. They're great. Streamed in the Audacy app. I listened to them when I lived in Virginia many years ago. I just like the guys on the show - they're all buddies from when they were kids and somehow ended up with a radio show that has now spanned a couple of decades.
