Today marks 4 months, I think about 34 classes. There's a competition on August 2nd and I told my coach I'm interested in signing up. He's in support.
What can I expect? There's 4 stripe white belts in class that can absolutely destroy me, but theres also guys who've started before me who I've been able to submit and get in good positions on. So I imagine the talent spectrum may be large if its between guys like that and newer guys like me. Focusing on using the experience as a gauge of where I'm at and what I need to work on, would like to still be competitive though.
What did you wish you knew before your first comp?
Nice! Glad you're enjoying and testing the comp waters!
As far as competition, as OG says it'll be fast and intense. Even in a 5 minute match, the outcome is often decided in the first couple scores/minutes, so it's really important to do some very short training rounds (as in first-point-wins format). Scoring first is huge in competition format.
Other thing...have a game plan that accents what you already execute well. No point in adding new stuff, most white belt tournaments are won/lost on fairly basic stuff where execution/planning is the determining factor.
And most important, have fun and enjoy it!
Consistency: It's only a virtue if you're not a screw-up.
