Heat won't do too much at this point but can't really hurt. I think working with a therapist who is going to push the range of motion a bit more will be good for you so you won't stiffen up too much. Keep me updated to your progress.

I've been having pain in my leg on the front where it joins with the hip. It starts to hurt after 10 minutes of walking. Sometimes hurts when I'm sleeping and radiates down my leg. Sometimes it's so bad I can't out wait on it when I go from sitting.

Any thoughts and should I skip the GP and go straight to Ortho?

How far down does it radiate? Any previous trauma to the area? Any back issues?

At night it's the entire leg. Most of the time it's localized to just the area where the leg and hip connect.

No major back issues. Just lower back pain occasionally. No trauma to the area. It would hurt at times when I was in great shape.

Sounds like the low back needs to be ruled out. Have you seen a PT in your area?

I haven't seen anyone. Trying to figure out who to see.

I strained my right adductor muscle while running last December as I was increasing my mileage on a hilly course. My lower abs and lower left back muscles were also strained. After 2 rounds of P.T. (because I would not stop running the first time), I am finally over the adductor strain, but the abs never got better. They only hurt when I run---from start to finish and a little when I get out of bed in the morning. What can I do to repair the strained muscles besides stop running for 2-3 weeks?

You doing any strengthening for the affected areas?

I have been doing 300 crunches 5-6 days a week for over 40 years. That is all I do for the abs and I do not know if that helps my back muscles. I am 69 and never strained my abs and rarely ever strained any back muscles. I started taking Ibuprofen 3 days ago and there seems to be some improvement. I might be on the right track, but any advice is appreciated.

So doing ab exercises hurts your back now?

Nothing seems to hurt my back except the tension from the strained ab muscles. It appears to be collateral damage and it has nearly gone away, while the ab strain lingers. Fortunately, the abs have progressively improved over the past week. They would probably be gone if I had stopped running for 3-4 weeks. This could have all been over in late January.

I know this thread got quiet lately, but I'm curious on OP's thoughts on my recent shoulder MRI report. I do have an appointment to go follow up with the physician that ordered the image, but I'm anxious to hear an opinion.

I'm 45. Very fit and very active prior to this. Reduced to walking only lately with this.

You tried PT? You have history of dislocations?
bam02

I've only done home PT for this one.

I have always had a history of shoulder issues and I think dislocations.

Literally about 12 months ago I had the same issue on my left shoulder and I tried to be proactive about exercises in PT but I was still doing jiu-jitsu and I did wind up dislocating it and greatly aggravating it. I then did a couple of months of going to a physical therapist with minimal relief. It did finally heal though it still gives me some problems.

This one is my right shoulder and it came on about two months ago kind of on its own. I did continue to do jiu-jitsu and lift weights, but I tried to be very careful about it. I have not gone to PT yet for this one but I'm guessing I'm going to need to. I definitely do not want to have surgery if at all possible.

Thanks for responding!

Give PT a shot for a few months and if not any better surgery might your best option at that point.

Thanks. So can a labral tear actually heal with enough time or is goal of PT mostly to stabilize joint with surrounding muscles?
aggiederelict
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Time plus rehab gives you a shot. If it wasnt for the labral tear this wouldnt be a big issue. Surgery might be in your future but why no try to rehab it?

Oh, I believe in PT but just felt like it wasn't helpful for what seemed like a similar issue last year on my other shoulder. I spent almost $2000 out-of-pocket. I feel like I got nowhere.

Saw the doctor this afternoon. He gave me a steroid shot in the area of the posterior tear. Hopefully that settles everything down for now. I need to call the PT suggested to schedule my first appointment.

He said he rarely recommends surgery for shoulder labrum tears. He thinks it will respond well to PT and allow me to resume most of my previous activities.

Thanks LAX. I'm gonna try to get a PT session or two in next week but then I'll have a ton of travel for the next month so I'll try to do whatever they Rx at home and on the road.

I'll hit you up depending on how I'm progressing later this summer.

Do you have any recommendations on PT for rehabbing inferior shoulder labrum? Doctor said PRP and PT didn't have a good chance to heal it but trying to avoid surgery if at all possible. Had some steroid shots and did PT for 2 months, did not see much improvements.

Bam, if it helps any, I dealt with some significant shoulder issues in my left shoulder last fall. Really started in August, got to the point I couldn't really do any chest or shoulder lifting without significant pain. Saw an Ortho and he sent me to PT. First PT I tried, I didn't like, second one was great though. Saw him September - early December. Took a lot of time but I went from not even being able to lower a 45 lb bar to my chest without a lot of pain to back to pretty much normal now (since probably January). I had an MRI done at one point, and I had, among other things

Partial rotator cuff tear
AC joint arthrosis
Tearing of the posterosuperior labrum
Partial tearing of the subscapularis

As I progressed last fall, I just did what I could in the gym and slowly added things back in at light weights. I also added in specific work for the upper back and posterior deltoid and rotator cuff. My PT also did a lot of dry needling and stim as I had a lot of resulting pain and tightness in my upper back, throughout my shoulder, and into my chest. Also, deep tissue massages were very helpful as well.

Long story short, things can definitely heal and get better, depending on the issue/s. I'm back to where I was before, benching without any issue and getting my strength back after several months of not being able to do much. When I had my annual physical in March with my GP, we talked about it as well, and he mentioned that shoulder injuries can sometimes take up to a year to heal completely.

Thank you. That feedback is helpful and reassuring. Can I ask you what you liked/didn't like about the different PT's you tried?

The first PT I went to was an older guy who I felt like had some outdated ideas. For example, he told me to just stop doing anything that was bothering my shoulder. He also felt that benching in general would eventually destroy your shoulders no matter what you did. And going a step further, as we discussed weightlifting in general, he also felt the same about squats, that they would eventually destroy your knees and not to do them (I'm 48 and have been squatting below parallel since I was 13 and my knees are in great shape)

So I found someone else. New guy was younger and had a background in weightlifting. He had me doing a lot of moments early on to address various weaknesses that he thought probably contributed (and it very much helped). Some of these I then incorporated into my workouts with weight. Also, he was a firm believer in not just completely stopping what you're doing. So if it hurt to lower a bar to my chest, go as far as I can without pain. Increase the range of motion as you can within tolerances. Start adding weight back slowly within your tolerances. Basically, don't stop completely unless something is broken or torn to the point doing a motion would make it worse. Also, he didn't just have me do a fixed set of exercises for a period of time. I was going once a week and he would switch things up depending on how I was feeling, and what specifically I felt helped the week before and what I thought didn't. He was always listening to me and wanting my feedback and adjusting things accordingly.

Thanks for the great explanation. Yeah I would've definitely dropped the first guy as well! And I will make sure that whoever I wind up with as a positive attitude towards weightlifting and hopefully jiu-jitsu.

My shoulder feels at least 90% better today after the injection so that is nice. I know I still need to be careful with it and won't do much until I get into the PT.

Do you do piezoelectric shockwave therapy? Or have thoughts on it?

I'm at an international "mini Olympics" and there's a taiwanese PT that talked me into trying it. Let him try it on my anterior shoulder, where I have some tightness and pain. And wow! That lit it up. It was way more intense than my first time getting dry needled. I actually almost fell after standing because I vagaled. But the dull ache I had in there is gone. At least for now.

Going to need stretching recommendations, and possibly some stability/strengthening exercises.

MRI showed Slap tear (was originally torn in 2021), partial supraspinatus tear (2021 just showed tedinosis), and pretty significant frozen shoulder. Can't really get my arm elbow shoulder to make an "L" or do anything in an overhead press or position.

Have a 2nd opinion in 2 weeks (1st Dr didn't even let me explain anything before he left to get the cortisone shot was a sports medicine Dr) with an orthopedic surgeon doctor. Would like to avoid surgery unless the Dr believes it would be the best option.

Do want to be able to return to bowling by January if possible. If I have to be away from bowling long term, I can switch hands as an option.

I don't personally use it but I have seen more and more PT's use in their practice. I have not seen the literature on it. I remember in school years it ago being discussed as an effective tool against chronic plantar fascitis.

Did the doctor not send you for physical therapy? Where are you located? This seems like this would be the next logical step if you are trying to avoid surgery.
