Last I heard, it was a formality. MLS granted an Austin franchise to Precourt though.

could be wrong ; i haven't read up much, but from what someone tried to explain to me:

the MLS owns all of the teams. the "owners" of the franchises are actually investment partners with MLS. If the City of Columbus wanted to file suit vs the Crew for violation of an Ohio rule that says they must offer the City a chance to buy them before moving them to another city, they'd be suing the MLS, not the former (still current?) owner Anthony Precourt (the dude that wanted to move them Austin before the Browns ownership stepped in).

anywho, they are avoiding a big lawsuit between the city of Columbus and the MLS. Austin TX approved space for a pro soccer team-- might have to be home-grown or moved from somewhere else besides Columbus.

The Ohio rule is what got them. Haslan (Browns owner) and an investment group has agreed to buy them.

So the MLS awarded Precourt an Austin franchise, assuming the sale goes through.

This is a really bad look for US Soccer if it doesn't pan out.

We waited a year, hired a GM, and then hired the COO's brother, who has basically no managerial skins on the wall. This was a very non-transparent process with many of the supposed top candidates saying they were either never contacted or never formally interviewed.

Not that there would be any blowback if it fails since US Soccer has basically no accountability.

Your point? He manages a team in a league that strives for equality amongst its teams.

Are you saying he isn't a good manager?

I don't know. Those certainly aren't skins.

Not sure how he'll do as USMNT coach but he's done a pretty darn good job at Columbus given the lack of star players he's had on his roster.

That is good to know. I don't follow MLS.

So you're saying he's done a good job. And you're right. But that's not what I said.

You don't get trophies for doing a good job. So yes, he has basically no skins. He has an MLS Cup appearance. So one conference championship.

For the record, im not opposed to him as much as I am the hiring process. He doesn't get me excited but at least we can move forward with an identity now. I'm willing to give him a shot. He can't be much worse than the last 4-5 years.

So what was Columbus' style of play?

Man I'm just so underwhelmed with this. Don't know much about him, he hasn't won anything, former international, and his brother is high up in US Soccer.

That doesn't sound like the resume of someone we can all believe in from day one.

Considering the success that Tab Ramos has had with the U-20's, I'd consider him over Berhalter all day everyday. He damn well u derstands this player pool better than any of the other candidates.

Berhalter was a pretty good player and I was a fan of his as a player. The nepotism and lack of unquestioned success is what gets me.

Hopefully he does a good job and we can all laugh at this thread down the road.

This article on Berhalter is pretty interesting...

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/03/21/system-star-how-berhalter-built-crew-sc-pass-and-move-maestros%3famp

-Pressing
-Possession oriented
-Fullbacks involved in attack
-Uses solely a 4-2-3-1 formation in Columbus.

He actually preaches system above individuals so it isn't just based on personnel. He's said that it takes buy-in from the players to play this way or it won't work.

I like the core of the system but what if we don't have the players?

Another con about Berhalter is that Will Trapp will probably be a mainstay on his squad since that's his current coach...damn typing that might make me puke.

Pulisic better start figuring out how to manage his freaking niggling injuries because he is starting to lose vast amounts of minutes. Jadon Sancho is far better than he is and Larsen performs much more consistently.

I don't think he will doing anything dumb like just play MLS players, but like Oregon said...I think there is a place for Will Trapp but it's not a starter in real competition.

I really hope his first list of invitees include Wondo. I have my my fingers crossed that Berhalter will do this just to set the correct tone with the fans. I know he would have been the first on my list if for no other reason than to mess with people.

I would seriously laugh my ass off if he did.

Reading that makes it seem foolish of any of us not to have seen this coming when Trapp was making so many recent appearances and starts for the NT. I think this thing was decided long ago and for some reason took this long to announce.

You're probably right about that. Like PatAg has said a few times though, Trapp has no business being on the field unless it's a friendly or really low tier Concacaf game. I really don't want to see him but having him in camp would probably pay dividends. A guy like Zardes too since he's familiar with the system.

One thing I do like is that it doesn't focus on one player and is a high work ethic system...but that also pisses me off because they could've been working on it a year ago. I think we have the unselfish players here that will thrive in a system like this up front and in midfield...not sure about the outside backs though. Yedlin, even though he had his limitations, is definitely comfortable moving forward and attacking so that's a plus. Gotta find a left back for this system.
