A Suarez defender... I've now seen it all!

Ghana got a penalty and Uruguay got a red card. Its not like Uruguay wasn't punished harshly for the red card. Was it maybe a bit unsporting? Possibly. But in terms of preventing a good and being punished for it, it's not too much different from taking down a guy from behind after he's beaten the keeper and about to tap it in.

Either way, I didnt walk away from that game commending the sportsmanship and integrity of the Uruguay team.

And not arguing the tactical advantage and great thinking by Suarez, or that he should have watched it go in. And Ghana got exactly what they should have and wet the bed at the PK and the shootout. But just like I said earlier, it seems that Uruguay is always the team that looks to bend the rules in hopes that they get away with it (all teams do it, but Uruguay just always comes to mind).

Back on thread track - what a save by France!

Being a defender on the goaline sucks in situations where you're behind the goalie and there's a scramble. You almost instinctively use your hands to stop anything above your chest. Thats why you teach kids to shot high and hard right at the defenders head in those situations.

Well a tackle can be made legally, it's within the rules to attempt that.

But playing with your hands is never allowed.

How was the first 20 minutes? I missed it and it seemed pretty balanced the last 25+ minutes of the 1st half. I'm amazed Lloris stopped that header and Godin missed from 1 hard off the line.

An intentional PI when the cb knows the receiver is about to burn them
A smart foul to prevent a fast break in basketball
Etc
Etc

I agree that they are a bit different, but at it's worst, a tackle made by going in from behind on a guy about to score on an open net with no hope at actually playing the ball could also be labeled "cheating"

I defend the play, not the player, and have defended it since it happened. I have zero issues with that play

Sure it does! Like I said, it certainly is a tactic. But it doesnt matter what sport it is, I still think it's cheap and I wouldnt coach or encourage it. But is it necessary to stop big plays? - yes. If you want to keep yourself out of having to make that decision: be quicker, beat the opposing team to the ball, etc.

Pretty certain that in that situation it was instinct and reaction more than something that is coached

You're probably right, he just didnt have a great reputation beforehand (no pun intended) to make me think it was "instinct" as much as "intentional".

Is the field in that bad a shape? Seems like the ball is bouncing all over the place.
