Getting announced tonight supposedly. Apparently these *******s are just determined to **** up stuff that doesn't need changes.

Clubs named are:
Man City
Man United
Chelsea
Liverpool
Arsenal
Tottenham
Real Madrid
Barcelona
Atletico Madrid
Inter Milan
AC Milan
Juventus

Really need the entire world to boycott this ***** I don't know anyone who likes this idea besides the owners of the clubs

My thoughts on this have changed now that Spurs aren't at the top of the table

Guaranteed European competition!

Yeah, my first thought was what is Tottenham doing on that list?

Every team would get 350m to rebuild squad and another 233m as well

Yep. League is an extortion attempt. And probably a successful one.

Sounds like local leagues are threatening to kick participants out of domestic competitions. Probably just a bluff

Probably another opportunity for the rich to get richer off Covid.

No German or French teams in the "founding" group (yet). I wonder if they would participate as invited clubs or if they'll dig their heels and keep this from getting off the ground.

There will eventually be two major "domestic" soccer leagues. A European one and a North American one.

French or German teams?!?!

THEY ALREADY HAVE TOTTENHAM! What more do you need out of a Euro Super League!?!?

...TOTTENHAM! Haha

I'd be 100% on board with this if there was a fair promotion/relegation system back to the domestic leagues.

But there's not. So I'm not.

  • Arsenal are believed to be one of 12 founding clubs in the competition that will hold a permanent place in the Super League. The other rumoured clubs are as follows:
    • ENG: Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham
    • ESP: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid
    • ITA: Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan
    • Bayern Munich and PSG have both reportedly declined invitations to the competition.
  • The competition is expected to be expanded to 20 clubs total, with 15 permanent members and 5 qualifying members. The qualification criteria are not yet clear.
  • The competition format is expected to be two groups of 10 which play each other twice each, once home and once away. Upon the completion of the groups the top four in each table go into a standard knockout format to determine the winner. The format is expected to be classic 1st v 8th; 2nd v 7th etc to reward strong group performances. How the groups are seeded is not yet known.
  • Joining the ESL is expected to be worth 310 million, compared to 100 million for qualifying for the UCL.
  • ESL participants will have an additional 3.5 billion pool to share among them, possibly meaning a further 233m for founder clubs.
  • Matches would take place in midweek, with the exception of the final. Clubs would still intend to play in their domestic leagues. Despite this, there are threats of bans from other competitions for ESL Participants.

One thing I don't get is if they do get this through how they want, is these teams already play nearly 50 matches a year. Your subtracting the bare minimum of 6 group stage UCL matches and adding 18 minimum for the super league. How are the players with limited squads gonna be able to handle the work load. Not to mention the usual FIFA international windows. You're looking at massive burnout and injury potential

So is this supposed to be concurrent with domestic leagues like champions league or an international league "superior" to domestic leagues?

They're saying its gonna replace Champions League and clubs will still compete on the domestic level. Domestic leagues are saying they're gonna kick teams out that participate

What's the endgame here? Surely UEFA has the leverage with being able to control Olympic/domestic league participation. Does UEFA just redesign CL to automatically include these top dollar teams?

I wasn't a participant in the first thread about this, so I'm a bit behind.

Almost seems like they're adopting a version of the USA/CAN pro systems.

Based on the promised money being thrown around, i get why the teams that accepted did so. That said, i dont perticularly like it or understand the purpose of this league vs what you already have (EL & CL).

I've already cut out Champions League since I'm not shelling out for Paramount+. I will not watch this either, I'll keep watching more MLS and whatever euro leagues still exist and refuse to participate.

this is my thought. Creating local monopolies for a fixed number of spots in the league so extorting concessions like billion plus dollar stadiums out of local governments under threat of relocation is now possible.

I agree with the posts above, it seems like they're trying to create a psuedo NFL-type league with a set number of permanent teams and the playoffs.

Hope they do. Only hope of getting this called off is to play hardball. Watch England melt down when 90% of their best players aren't at the Euros this summer. If that doesn't spur action, nothing will.

One flinch and it's over. The owners of these clubs clearly don't believe that FIFA, UEFA, and the domestic FAs are serious.

IMO, the only bargaining chip the establishment really have is banning players from international competition. But even thats a bad one, I think. It will ultimately lead to associations like Spain, Italy, and England which are heavily represented in these clubs and associations which have tenuous relationships to FIFA at best anyway (like the USA) to start the machinations of a mew worldwide body to replace FIFA.

Banning these clubs from domestic competition will backfire hugely, that will just accelerate a pan-European franchise domestic league model. Because they will simply replace the lost domestic games with a 40 game european table model too, which will be hugely successful.

Apparently the La Liga president just announced they will ban clubs that participate. Would be crazy to see if they actually ban Real, Barca, and Atletico. Amazing

As a former student of a school in the College Football Super League I am for this.

All the punishments they're meting actually hurt the domestic leagues, UEFA and FIFA

Isn't it common knowledge that most of the players don't really want to play for the national teams? That gets rid of the Barcelona players playing for Spain thing.

If you ban the top teams the money for the tv contracts are much less. Who wants to watch Atalanta Burnley or Valladolid?

The super league will be able to play on the weekend if they get banned.

Super League is in a position of power on this
