Top 3 footballers all-time. Messi, Pele, ???........ Not in any order but I have to rate Messi in top 3 all time, maybe even without a WC title. If he's holding a WC title then the argument turns to all-time GOAT.

Had to get up for one tournament every 4 years. That's 18 total matches played. That's what makes the best ever?

It was a much smaller soccer world then. And he played with overwhelming talent that won without him. In 62 he only played 2 matches (non of the knockouts). And they still romped to the title.

Club soccer has to factor in at least a little. I have no idea what to make of the Santos career.

Messi is better than Pele and it isn't particularly close. Pele dominated a couple world cups against much weaker competition than modern times and didn't come close to having the club career Messi had. Messi's 2012 was easily the best calendar year for a footballer in history.

I think some of these stats really are mindblowing. He's not a true striker yet (excluding PKs) has scored more goals than Ronaldo for example in a lot fewer games played. Throw in the assists and the more nuanced stats like key passes and successful dribbles which he has dominated the sport at for the past decade+

How about this from his prime. He was such an outlier even elite players looked pedestrian compared to him. We may never see a player so dominant in every phase of the game again. Well except he was never dominant as an aerial threat.

Gordo: Did you know that the Brazilian government named Pele a "National Treasure" and would not let him play in other countries in his prime? Only at the end of his career was Pele able to sign with Cosmos.
