Paraphrasing some thoughts from 4 different DFW youth coaches DOC & ECNL & RL level (3 diff clubs)
-G didn't run away the transfers, it was the assistant talking about defense first

Thanks for the insight and interesting tidbits of info. Not sure I follow the comment on "the assistant" talking defense first being the reason for the transfers. Does that refer to Phil? The vast majority of the transfers happened before Strader was hired and I don't think Taylor or Mautz have been at all involved with the defense.

Most of this is in line with what I have experienced and my thoughts on the DFW market and recruiting.

A couple of items....
I think the money amount for transfers is focused on the top of the top. Most transfers are still getting little to no money for the transfer. Some are getting what you stated but not many of the ones who were in the portal this year.

The girls who transferred had their reasons and I think the information you got is oversimplification of the situation. I would agree that what G and his staff valued in a player and style was not in line with what those girls brought to the table. I don't want to say too much because I don't want to speak for them. Let's just say their skill sets were valued much more at the schools they left for.

He will need a budget. He is no longer at what is now considered a blue blood in 2025. Without being at UNC, Stanford, Duke, ND, UVA, FSU you are going to have to fight for every recruit. Most of these 12/13/14/15 year olds have never seen A&M as a top team like they were in the early part of this century.

DFW is a very transactional place - especially in girls soccer. Jumping (or threatening to jump) from one club to another in order to get what you want becomes a habit. Most top players don't think twice about having to leave the state to get what they want. Using the "we are a Texas school" doesn't necessarily carry as much weight as other sports.

It took FSU 15 years to build to a blue blood. It can be done but it's not easy. Remember - three Texas teams have ever made the College Cup (SMU 1995, TAMU 2014, TCU 2025) and none have every made the finals. It's not easy and this program is in need or a near total rebuild and rebrand.

On what his style would be…

"could be that I may want to play a certain way, but if it doesn't make sense with the current players that we have, then it shouldn't be that way"

"Ultimately want to get to a way that's high energy, pressing, dynamic, to put us in position to score goals, and defend in high spaces"

He met with the team earlier today and he said he was going to have individual meetings with every single player in the coming days. Then start assessing strengths and weaknesses to see where we need help in or as he said "which positions need more love" lol

At the end of the day, if you have a couple of big donors that want to win big in soccer and put up $500K, A&M is one of the top teams in the country next year. It doesn't take long to build a brand if you are paying top dollar for talent (see FSU). Obviously the issue is we really don't have the willpower for that kind of investment in this sport. When choosing where to invest NIL dollars, the big donors will have soccer way down the list of priority. Bobby will have to do a good job of building relationships and evaluations to find the hidden gems in the portal. And of course be a good tactician of the game.

The player that was mentioned to me was at a top school and into the transfer portal. I have no idea how she played or minutes played this season.

I do know of a male player that IS NOT in the transfer portal yet but it getting offered between $25k and $40k by other schools through an intermediary. This player is supposedly happy at his current school but the team did not do well this season. Schools currently still in the tournament (Elite 8 right now) are reaching out and recruiting him, so there is a market.

Seth and Tim are out. As it should be. The Aggies are staying on (Alyssa & Curt).

We have to get back in with the talent pipeline in the DFW market. The best way to do that is hire an Assistant who has deep relationships and works in the market currently. Bobby should hire someone from Solar or FCD.

The top coaches from Solar (and maybe FCD) are making more money now than they could as an assistant/associate (and probably most head coaches) at college.

He'd be better off trying to hire one of the U15/16/17 USYNT coaches. They don't make much money and could help get ties to those players.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

I am very glad that Alyssa and Curt are being kept. Both are Aggies and Alyssa has many years of pro player experience and now several years of coaching experience. Curt has been with the program a long time AND he runs the camps, which is a good indicator the camps will not 'go away'. Would be great to see a lot of the money from the camps go to the players (not just the ones who participate in the camps).

Sooo, the coach is already making some good decisions - groovy!

Note: I still wonder if Tim came on board because there was some understanding during his recruiting and hiring process that he might replace G. Will never know.

Makes me wonder if Tim is still going to get paid for a second year he won't even coach. In other words he got a 2 year deal to make the move here.

Assistant will be another former mls player, Marc Burch. I don't see any previous coaching experience when I do a search, but maybe I'm just not seeing it. Looks like he was mls next recruiting director for a Colorado club team on the boys side. A former asu and ksu goalkeeper coach is also joining the staff: Ali Hanif.

Marc Burch is a College Placement Director for a U.S. Youth Soccer organization called Albion Colorado.
Quote:

A College Placement Director in United States Youth Soccer (USYS) is a staff member within a youth soccer club, dedicated to helping high school-age players and their families navigate the complex process of playing college soccer and attending college.1

This role is not a single position mandated by USYS nationwide, but rather a common and crucial position created by individual youth clubs to provide a specialized service to their players who aspire to play at the collegiate level.

Key Responsibilities of a College Placement Director
The director acts as a mentor, educator, and liaison to maximize a player's opportunities for recruitment and acceptance into a suitable college program. Their core duties typically include:
  • Guidance and Education:
    • Conducting seminars and workshops for players and parents on the college recruiting timeline, rules, and expectations.
    • Providing information on the different levels of college soccer (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and Junior College).
    • Educating families on the NCAA Eligibility Center requirements and academic standards.
    • Assisting with SAT/ACT test preparation resources.
  • Recruiting and Promotion:
    • Helping players create a personalized recruiting plan and identifying "best fit" schools based on athletic, academic, social, and financial criteria.
    • Teaching players how to effectively market and promote themselves to college coaches, including writing introductory emails and follow-up communications.
    • Working with players to compile digital recruiting tools like video highlight reels and player profiles/resumes.
  • Liaison and Networking:
    • Leveraging the club's extensive network to communicate directly with college coaches on behalf of the players.
    • Traveling with competitive teams to showcase tournaments and actively promoting players to attending college coaches.
    • Hosting college coach "ID Camps" or informational sessions at the club's facility.
  • Individual Support:
    • Holding one-on-one and team meetings to monitor academic progress and recruiting activities.
    • Providing feedback and realistic assessments regarding a player's potential level of play.
    • Offering support and guidance on official/unofficial college visits and managing scholarship offers and commitments.
In essence, the College Placement Director helps bridge the gap between competitive youth soccer and college athletics, ensuring the player is prepared both on the field and in the classroom for the next step

Head coach Bobby Shuttleworth announced a revamped Texas A&M soccer staff Thursday with the addition of two new coaches along with two returnees. Marc Burch and Ali Hanif are headed to Aggieland to serve as assistant coaches. Alyssa (Mautz) Bower returns for her fifth year as assistant coach while Curt Magnuson remains in his role as director of operations for the 24th year.

I'm ignorant when it comes to soccer, but are any of these coaches offensive minded? Head coach was a goalkeeper and it looks like one of the new assistants is also goalkeeper coach. The other new guy played in the MLS but the release doesn't say what position and it doesn't look like he has much experience coaching college soccer. Not saying this is a bad staff. Just genuinely curious. I think I saw posts earlier in the week or last week talking about club teams in the Dallas area and we need to market a more dynamic offensive philosophy than we have shown to get those top players interested in us. Maybe I'm remembering that wrong.

Keepers can make the best overall coaches because they stand there and watch the entire game.

Not saying he's going to great offensively, but just because he's a keeper doesn't mean he won't be.

I am not worried about it.

Does soccer have separate coaches for offense and defense?Or is it by position groups only? Or coaches that coach both? Obviously the head coach oversees all of it but how is it broken down for the assistants' responsibilities?

The Associate Head Coach typically runs practices, game plans, and style of play. Phil did this during his tenure.

When Phil was forced out, G made Seth/Alyssa in charge of the offense; Tim ran the defense. That was a very uncommon structure.
