So can KJ fight for rotation minutes? If he plays like tonight we should be trading Marco for nothing ASAP.

We should be trading Marco anyways. He can still shoot and provide offense and he's on a cheap expiring deal. Should be worth a second round pick at minimum.

Keldon showed a lot of really good things tonight, most importantly he was 2/3 on a catch and shoot 3s with a quick release (also drilled a half court buzzer beater). He got out on the break and picked up some easy buckets, rebounded well on both ends, continues to get to the free throw line, and his defense is fantastic so far. Still needs a lot of work with his handles and finishing, but shows some flashes of having a little bit of play making ability. IF he were to work his way into regular minutes, he'd get to park himself along he 3 point line on offense and wouldn't be asked to do too much like he has the freedom to do tonight. Still, super impressive tonight: 29 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, 1 block.

Luka had a really good second quarter and then was very eh. He's got a lot of tools, but he's still adjusting to the size and athleticism. Gets into the paint, but has trouble finishing. He did adjust and was able to get to the free throw line, so that was promising, but he's got to learn to lean into the defender and initiate the contact. His jumper is super smooth, but he finished just 1-5 from 3. He has some decent vision and made some nice passes, but also had 4 turnovers. He also lacks some conditioning right now that gets real obvious when he gets winded out there. All very fixable things, especially for a 19 year old.

Keldon definitely came to play tonight. What I have seen from Luka the last couple of nights is that he is very raw. He has alot of skills and he does alot of good things but he just needs alot of playing time and coaching. The Spurs usually draft players that have a good work ethic that want to get better and if he has that we could have a star in the making but he is at least a year or two away. But he doesn't turn 19 until Sept.

Keldon has a good looking shot
Hopefully Luka develops but he has the tools

Luka has the raw talent and skill that makes you drool. The Spurs havent had a guy like this since forever.

And Keldon showed today that his shot is very nice. His catch and shoot numbers in college were actually really strong. If he keeps this up I could see him playing a role very soon. If he could play the 3 then it's a virtual lock.

Yeah I definitely agree that Keldon will be the one to make an impact the quickest. He might even get some meaningful minutes this year if he continues to play at this high level.

Agreed on both comments.

So many banging the pot that the draft picks should have been swapped - Luka at 29, Keldon at 19. And while Keldon will likely impact the team sooner, there are guys like Keldon that can be available where the Spurs pick in most years of the draft. Not too many guys with the skills and size Luka has that are available where the Spurs pick.

Way too early overreaction - both guys are going to be very important contributors to the Spurs. Luka isn't showing as much as the other two rookies, but what he does show is quick feet offensively, fantastic offensive skills, a good looking shot, and an unteachable 6'11" solid frame that just needs some more strength to hold up.

I'm entirely too excited about the young guys on this roster right now. Guys we currently have that seem like they will play a big role going forward:

Dejounte (22)
Lonnie (20)
Jakob (23)
Luka (19)
Keldon (19)
Derrick (24)
Bryn - probably not a core guy but he made a solid leap last year (25)

Of that group, every single guy with the exception of Bryn and maybe Poeltl seem to have high ceilings and are still getting better.

Throw in the unknowns of Quinn (22) and Metu (22) and what they could be, this is a fun time to be a Spurs fan. We haven't been this young in a while, and every single one of these young guys have some really intriguing skills.

There's a whole lot to like about our young core and it's exciting that we were able to build for the future without having to go into full on tank mode. However, one of Dejounte and Derrick has to emerge as a true PG and one of Dejounte, Derrick, and Lonnie has to emerge as an all star caliber player so that we can start building around them. Also a very good chance that one of those guys eventually gets traded due to a log jam for us and having a high value (maybe moving up in a future draft like we did with George Hill).

So Boogie is having a really hard time finding a team right now and won't be getting a very big contract. I was very much against him when I thought he was gonna take up all or most of the MLE, but I would be all for offering the remaining ~$3 mill we have left of the MLE and seeing if he'll bite. Low cost with potential high reward. We'd have to either waive (Metu) or trade someone (Marco) to clear up a roster spot, but imo it'd be worth it.

I would be a little worried about his locker room presence. He behaved fairly well last year as he had to fall in line with GSW and their vets. But I'm not sure how he'd do with a team full of young guys. If he could be behave I would be all for it.

It would be worth a shot. Apparently he a Demar are pretty good friends, plus there's LA, Rudy, and Patty that are all vets that could help him. Plus if he does end up being a problem, you cut him and move on because he's on such a cheap deal.

It's funny you say that. Chams has just reported that DeMar (among several other stars) has been in communication with him. Interesting.

We have 15 players on guaranteed contracts right now plus Eubanks on two-way, but DeQuinndary isn't included in that count. So if DeQuinn makes DeSpurs, we already have to cut Metu and eat his salary.

We have 7mm in space on the luxury tax right now. Keeping that space is probably ideal so we can more easily move DeRozan if something comes up.

Team under contract with last guaranteed year

Post:
LMA - 2020 (2021 is a team option for 24mm)
Metu - 2020 (2021 is a team option for 1.6mm)
Poeltl - 2020, RFA in 2021

Stretch:
Luka Samanic - 2021 (22 and 23 are team options)
Bertans - 2020
Gay - 2021

Wing:
DeRozan - 2021, but can opt out next summer
DeMarre - 2021
DeKeldon - 2021, team options for 2022 and 2023
DeLonnie - 2020, team options for 2021 and 2022
DeBelli - 2020

Combo/Point:
Forbes - 2020
White - 2020, team option for 2021
Mills - 2021
Murray - 2020, RFA in 2021

Unsigned: Quinndary Weatherspoon

Luxury Tax Space: 7mm
Dead Money: 5mm (thanks, Pau)

Plus the Kentucky connection with Keldon. This thing is basically wrapped up.

If Demarcus Cousins wants to play on your team for the minimum, you give it a go. As I stated on the other thread, he's a great deal at that price.

He provides floor spacing the Spurs badly need and a big body that can protect the paint against bigger lineups. I thought he played pretty well in the finals given his injury.

He needs someone who can manage his minutes well to avoid more quad damage. It will be the irony of all irony if he goes to the Spurs and Kawhi goes to the Lakers. I think my head might explode from the shock.

Plus we can then roll with the Delineup with Dejounte, Derrick, DeMar, Demarre, Demarcus

Yeah, I should have clarified in my post..

"Big role" could be in a Spurs uniform or as a trade piece to another team.

I think all of these guys have skills that could be something in the NBA. Whether they all fit together in SA I don't know. And who becomes an All Star if any of them do is still up in the air. But I think all of these guys seem to have "something" that could make them stick long term in this league or here in SA.

Metu is out. Not sure what's injured but he hasn't played yet. I think there's a really good chance Weatherspoon gets a two way. We already did away with Ben Moore's two way from last year to open up that spot.
