I will laugh my ass off if the Spurs trade into the first round for one of these last picks to draft someone.

Atlanta traded Reddish and the 20 to move up to 16. The Spurs could have taken that and gotten a rotation player in Reddish and still drafted this kid if they moved him that much.

Just terrible.

DJ's reaction to Primo. Dude is about to get traded or he is a terrible teammate.

Yes. This is likely what happened. It's a ballsy pick. Wright better pray to god he works out. Here is is track record:

-Selecting Luka
-Bertans/Morris fiasco
-Vassell over Halliburton
-Keeping LMA and DDR on the same team for 3 years with nothing to show for it
-Drafting a second rounder at 12th

Murray, White and Johnson all look like good picks. I think Vassell will turn out to be good as well. Walker is the wild card. I also think Trey Jones is a solid NBA PG.

Wright didn't join the Spurs until after the DJ draft in 2016. He should have taken Keldon with our first 1st rounder in 2019. He's very lucky he was still available.

You can make "should have taken" reel for every GM in the league. Its lazy.

I was shocked with this pick. But thats really only because no mocks predicted it and nobody was projecting Primo to be a lottery pick. The reality is none of that matters. It looks like Wright likes 6'5" guards with high character and defensive potential. At least Primo can shoot.

I guess the Primo pick was Wright's call.
Quote:

Primo said his pre-draft workout for the Spurs went well, but he thought it was his off-the-court connection that cement him as San Antonio's first-round pick on Thursday night.

"It was a great workout," Primo said, "but I don't really think it was really about the workout per se. It was more about just being able to interact with the coaching staff, interact with the all the support staff, everything like that. The workout went great, but it was more about the fit. I got to meet just about everybody but Pop."

Here's the link to Wright's post draft conference. He basically highlights Primo's character and ceiling as the reason for selecting him. He also made it a point to say that Primo was basically a high school senior playing in the SEC. He also touches on the need for more shooting, versatility and front court help during FA.

I feel a little bit better about the pick today than I did yesterday. I guess the truth is, we don't know what other teams had their eyes on Primo or when he would have gone. Although Primo was shocked where he was selected so I'm not sure I can fully sell myself on that. Lol

A high school senior playing in the average SEC

What was Tony Parker doing at 15?

High character should never be the first thing mentioned about a player

If this was their guy and there was no great trade to move down, or there was but it might have been too low and were risking not getting him, then fine. I agree 12 is too high, but him being so young, already 6'5"-6'6", with a pretty solid shot, I can see why they take the swing. Add in the character and hopefully work ethic, then I understand even more.

I like the second round pick.

I do seriously question how we're going to make this all work with our current guard/undersized wing situation.

I really think we are going to move one of DJ and White at some point. I kind of think it will be DJ given his social media outbursts as of late. I'm okay with that, assuming White can stay healthy.

In any event, Primo will likely spend the year in Austin so the guard trade might not happen this year. But hey, summer camp starts in a few days, and both of our picks will be there. Let's see what they got.

Both of the picks are likely headed for a year in G-League, so they won't impact the roster this season. Need to get a big in free agency or a sign and trade with DeRozan, assuming there is a market for him.

The Primo pick just feels like Wright trying to prove he is the smartest guy in the room, ranking the guy higher than any other team. Here's hoping the pick doesn't prove the opposite.

Wright's shouldn't even be an intern in an NBA front office, and Pop and R.C. have given him the keys because of his skin color.

The league's getting bigger at every position and this dip**** keeps grabbing 6'5" and under guards.

And even if this pick works out, the reality is they could have traded down. We know Atlanta gave up Reddish and the 20 to move to 16.

Could have gotten a rotational SF and still grabbed Primo at 20 if they had their heart set on this kid.

Just abysmal management. Add it to everything else Wright has overseen and this clown is doing everything he can to destroy this team's future.

I like DJ but I feel like we have seen what he is going to be. Good defender, has improved his shooting, gets careless with his ballhandling. I would be OK with moving him if we can get good value in return. I think Keldon is going to prove to be the leader of this team and I hope he grows up fast.

I don't agree with a lot of what Wright has done. But come on man. This is just a ridiculous statement. Take your ideological insecurities to the politics board.

He's 6'5" with a 6'9" wingspan with high defensive potential, and will likely continue to grow.

Where tf to people keep getting this from? This just didn't happen. Atlanta kept their pick and Reddish.

Look, just stop. You don't know that's why he got the job, and saying so because it feeds your anger doesn't make it any more true.

Brian Wright also made the Keldon pick which has worked out. NONE of us know what other teams are thinking. They very well could have known that Luka would be gone but Keldon had a higher chance of being available at 29. And I'm fairly certain RC was the main one who loved Luka. Same thing could have happened with Primo. There likely were deals to move down, but if they could only get to 20, and Primo was being looked at hard in the late teens, they got their guy. And atlanta didn't give up ***** Stop lying.

Brian Wright has likely shown enough people he deserved a shot at this job. You may not think so because you don't like his approach, but that doesn't make him an incompetent diversity hire. Every single GM makes questionable decisions. And we've seen some that looked questionable that turned out to not be. So give the kid and the off-season a chance, and take your racism/woke schtick elsewhere.

I'm not so sure about Wieskamp spending the year in the G-League. He's a junior so has some maturity and he's an elite shooter who can work well off ball off screens. We have no one who can do this on our team. And from what I read, while he may lack the athletic tools, he plays hard on defense. Honestly, if he can show he can knock down open threes and is halfway competent on team defense, I could see him taking Walker's minutes.

Biggest surprises

1. Josh Primo, Spurs: Primo went ahead of the following guards in the SEC: Moses Moody, who won the league's freshman of the year award; Cam Thomas, who finished fourth nationally in scoring; Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson, who had better seasons and have had better careers at every step of their careers to this point; Tre Mann, who won all-conference honors. Look, college performance isn't everything, but tell that to anyone who watched college basketball last season and it would completely blow their mind. I think the Spurs out-thought themselves here a bit. I was really interested in Primo as an interesting late first-round, early second-round pick due to his youth and shooting ability. But I think that what's missing from his game is the kind of athletic pop that typically comes from these high-upside swings on guards. I don't think Primo separates all that well with his handle. He's good at contorting his body after he picks the ball up, but he needs to get better at changing paces and direction with the ball, and generally getting stronger on the ball. If he's a secondary playmaker, he's one that had a distinctly negative assist-to-turnover ratio. He doesn't have awesome contact balance yet. Really, the only thing I feel comfortable with Primo doing right now is shooting. He has some upside, but I think it's going to take a while to reach it, and even if he does, I think the upside is more fourth or fifth starter as opposed to star. If you're taking this big of a project, I think there need to be some star pathways for me to get enthused.

Primo was definitely a reach by all accounts. Wright sees something in the kid that no blogger sees. This whole industry can be frustrating. So many guys do a lot of work either evaluating the talent themselves or talking to scouts they know to get evaluations. Then they "predict" where each guy will go. If you take a guy earlier than predicted its considered a reach but that evaluation being done in the first place is a such a recursive prediction. I kinda like seeing GMs go their own path. It's got to be incredibly hard to do knowing you'll get roasted now and possibly in the future if the kid doesn't perform.

Honestly, at this point, I'd rather the Spurs take on salaries for future draft capital. Maybe get some overpaid vets to be mentors to our young guys, take our medicine this next season, draft in the top 10 next draft and buy out the vets to make a run at '22 FA.

If they could find someone that is a leader on the floor, that would go a long way. Demar was never a leader. Patty could be but it is hard to lead from the bench. I'm not sure who that could be at this point but it would help this team tremendously. As much as I don't like the guy, Chris Paul is a leader. If the Spurs could find someone of that caliber, I think they are a playoff team.

Lowry is probably the only realistic option if we want to pay him. Although Kyle might not be up to it.

I think it's possible that KJ will be the leader of this team. He's just not there yet.

That's what I was trying to do with that brilliant GSW trade idea that would have netted us the #4 pick to get Jalen Suggs, and get Wiggins with enough room left for a max offer to Collins.

Harrison Barnes with his 2y20mm left would fit in. Hits 3s, mostly plays stretch 4.

John Wall still has the worst contract at 2y/98mm or so.

Tobias has a terrible max contract and would be a solid fit for us, but Philly isn't unloading.

Kevin Love still has that awful contract and still sucks at D. But stretch 4. 2y60mm.

Kemba Walker has 2y75mm left. He would fit well and OKC already has SGA. OKC's problem is the salary floor, not the salary cap, though. Kemba is their only player making over 6mm/year. They don't have much use for Kemba, especially since they drafted two guys that are play creators in the first round yesterday.

Worse contract on teams with Lux Tax problems.

Brooklyn (70mm lux tax bill with just 7 players signed)
Joe Harris (3y/58mm)
DeAndre Jordan 2y/20mm

Utah: No space under lux tax with Mike Conley as FA.
Joe Ingles, 10mm.
Bojan, 2y38mm
Gobert: 5y205mm left

Wizards: Freed up some money with Westbrook trade.
Bertans: 4y54mm (last year only 5mm guaranteed)

Minnesota, freed up 4mm by trading Rubio. Has Edwards, Russell, Cunningham all at G.
Russell: 2y62mm left.

76ers, right at lux tax
Bad contracts to Tobias Harris and Ben Simmons. Free agent Danny Green

Lakers: Have 122.6mm tied up in Gasol, Bron, Brodie, and Davis. No idea what they are doing. Still paying Luol Deng 5mm.

Nuggets: 25mm under lux tax, but JMGreen, Will Barton, Paul Millsap are FAs.

Milwaukee: 11mm over Lux tax with free agents Portis, Tucker, Forbes, Teague
No terrible contracts. Maybe Brook Lopez at 2y27mm

Portland: 21mm under lux tax, but with FAs: Powell, Collins, Kanter, Melo,
Covington 13mm

Not a lot out there on bad contracts unless you want to take John Wall or Kevin Love.
