I will laugh my ass off if the Spurs trade into the first round for one of these last picks to draft someone.
Primo on what he thinks of when he hears Spurs: โI think family, I think winning is big. Competing at the highest level. I think the mid-range, I love that.โ

Yes. This is likely what happened. It's a ballsy pick. Wright better pray to god he works out. Here is is track record:
-Selecting Luka
-Bertans/Morris fiasco
-Vassell over Halliburton
-Keeping LMA and DDR on the same team for 3 years with nothing to show for it
-Drafting a second rounder at 12th
Sources: Spurs, No. 41: Joe Wieskamp.

Wright didn't join the Spurs until after the DJ draft in 2016. He should have taken Keldon with our first 1st rounder in 2019. He's very lucky he was still available.

I do love this pick. Sniper from 3.

Primo said his pre-draft workout for the Spurs went well, but he thought it was his off-the-court connection that cement him as San Antonio's first-round pick on Thursday night.
"It was a great workout," Primo said, "but I don't really think it was really about the workout per se. It was more about just being able to interact with the coaching staff, interact with the all the support staff, everything like that. The workout went great, but it was more about the fit. I got to meet just about everybody but Pop."
Both of the picks are likely headed for a year in G-League, so they won't impact the roster this season. Need to get a big in free agency or a sign and trade with DeRozan, assuming there is a market for him.Pendragon12 said:
If this was their guy and there was no great trade to move down, or there was but it might have been too low and were risking not getting him, then fine. I agree 12 is too high, but him being so young, already 6'5"-6'6", with a pretty solid shot, I can see why they take the swing. Add in the character and hopefully work ethic, then I understand even more.
I like the second round pick.
I do seriously question how we're going to make this all work with our current guard/undersized wing situation.

Wright's shouldn't even be an intern in an NBA front office, and Pop and R.C. have given him the keys because of his skin color.
The league's getting bigger at every position and this dip**** keeps grabbing 6'5" and under guards.
And even if this pick works out, the reality is they could have traded down. We know Atlanta gave up Reddish and the 20 to move to 16.
Could have gotten a rotational SF and still grabbed Primo at 20 if they had their heart set on this kid.
Just abysmal management. Add it to everything else Wright has overseen and this clown is doing everything he can to destroy this team's future.

I don't agree with a lot of what Wright has done. But come on man. This is just a ridiculous statement. Take your ideological insecurities to the politics board.Quote:

Where tf to people keep getting this from? This just didn't happen. Atlanta kept their pick and Reddish.Quote:

I'm not so sure about Wieskamp spending the year in the G-League. He's a junior so has some maturity and he's an elite shooter who can work well off ball off screens. We have no one who can do this on our team. And from what I read, while he may lack the athletic tools, he plays hard on defense. Honestly, if he can show he can knock down open threes and is halfway competent on team defense, I could see him taking Walker's minutes.Quote:

Teams interested in Atlanta restricted free agent John Collins have grown increasingly pessimistic that Collins can be signed away from the Hawks, league sources say.

Biggest surprises
1. Josh Primo, Spurs: Primo went ahead of the following guards in the SEC: Moses Moody, who won the league's freshman of the year award; Cam Thomas, who finished fourth nationally in scoring; Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson, who had better seasons and have had better careers at every step of their careers to this point; Tre Mann, who won all-conference honors. Look, college performance isn't everything, but tell that to anyone who watched college basketball last season and it would completely blow their mind. I think the Spurs out-thought themselves here a bit. I was really interested in Primo as an interesting late first-round, early second-round pick due to his youth and shooting ability. But I think that what's missing from his game is the kind of athletic pop that typically comes from these high-upside swings on guards. I don't think Primo separates all that well with his handle. He's good at contorting his body after he picks the ball up, but he needs to get better at changing paces and direction with the ball, and generally getting stronger on the ball. If he's a secondary playmaker, he's one that had a distinctly negative assist-to-turnover ratio. He doesn't have awesome contact balance yet. Really, the only thing I feel comfortable with Primo doing right now is shooting. He has some upside, but I think it's going to take a while to reach it, and even if he does, I think the upside is more fourth or fifth starter as opposed to star. If you're taking this big of a project, I think there need to be some star pathways for me to get enthused.
Primo was definitely a reach by all accounts. Wright sees something in the kid that no blogger sees. This whole industry can be frustrating. So many guys do a lot of work either evaluating the talent themselves or talking to scouts they know to get evaluations. Then they "predict" where each guy will go. If you take a guy earlier than predicted its considered a reach but that evaluation being done in the first place is a such a recursive prediction. I kinda like seeing GMs go their own path. It's got to be incredibly hard to do knowing you'll get roasted now and possibly in the future if the kid doesn't perform.LawHall88 said:https://theathletic.com/2741125/2021/07/30/nba-draft-winners-losers-and-superlatives-30-thoughts-on-who-impressed-and-surprised/Quote:

I am curious why Primo graded ahead of Moody, but I'm just beating a dead horse at this point.
Honestly, at this point, I'd rather the Spurs take on salaries for future draft capital. Maybe get some overpaid vets to be mentors to our young guys, take our medicine this next season, draft in the top 10 next draft and buy out the vets to make a run at '22 FA.Guitarsoup said:

If they could find someone that is a leader on the floor, that would go a long way. Demar was never a leader. Patty could be but it is hard to lead from the bench. I'm not sure who that could be at this point but it would help this team tremendously. As much as I don't like the guy, Chris Paul is a leader. If the Spurs could find someone of that caliber, I think they are a playoff team.Enzo The Baker said:Honestly, at this point, I'd rather the Spurs take on salaries for future draft capital. That's what I was trying to do with that brilliant GSW trade idea that would have netted us the #4 pick to get Jalen Suggs, and get Wiggins with enough room left for a max offer to Collins.Enzo The Baker said:Honestly, at this point, I'd rather the Spurs take on salaries for future draft capital.
