**** the Lakers. I hate this got rescinded, because I think it was an awful trade for the Lakers.
But now their center rotation is Jaxson Hayes and Christian Wood.
Yeah, it was a weird trade given Mark Williams is constantly broken.

It wouldn't have made any sense from a roster construction standpoint. His defense is terrible.
Not getting as many picks and swaps as possible was the real issue.

Reaves is an awful defender, but he could be a really good 6th Man or secondary ball handler

Wouldn't the Mavs have had to put more salary in the trade if Reaves was also in it? That would mean either Klay, Gafford, or PJ also in the deal.
Knecht is way easier, but I think the math would have worked to do Luka, Morris, Powell, Exum, and Maxi for AD, Reaves, Christie. I can't check it with the simulators. But it would be close.

Mavs brought in 50.3m and sent out 54m in the initial trade. Would be 60m out and 62.9m in with that trade.
Prosper instead of Hardy gets you to 60.8m instead of 60m.

Nico talked a lot about defense after the trade. Hardy has played 0 minutes since the trade. The only guys playing are guys who the staff trusts defensively. Even the Grimes trade is something, because he could go rogue sometimes.

The only way this trade isn't a complete failure is if Nico is right about Luka. That he's about to essentially become Joel Embiid and the Mavs got ahead of a super max trap. Even if AD and the Mavs win a title or 2, this trade only counts as a victory if Luka is severely diminished the rest of his career.
It's a stupid bet and one that will almost assuredly backfire, but that's the bet.
I don't necessarily disagree with the sentiment, but I do think it's hilarious that he included Shaq on that list of maniacal hard workers. If anything, Shaq was the poster child for "let him do whatever he wants as long as he shows up for games because he's a generational talent."

Shaq and Kobe's big beef was that Shaq thought the off-season was his and he was paid for the season, so he used the regular season to get in shape for the playoffs. He never even put in the effort to learn to shoot FTs.
But hey, Shaq did put in the effort for the 2000 season.

Larry Bird was basically an alcoholic.
Shaq was routinely out of shape and when confronted he basically said out of shape I'm the best center in the league, I play myself into shape and when I get there I'm unstoppable.
What really aligns those guys is that they walked on the floor, knew they were the best guy out there, told people they were the best guy out there, and then proved it. That's Luka. Not sure there's another guy in the league right now that does that, and usually there's only one or two of them in the league at any one time.

Reality is that Luka will win multiple titles in the next decade while the Mavs won't win dick. They are going to spend the next 2 seasons struggling to keep all these old guys on the court, then will sink into lottery hell for an indefinite period of time. Nothing says "dedicated to being a champion" like trading a generational talent for a guy that has played 50-60 fewer games in the same career timeframe because he can't stay on the court.
