The hyperbole and histrionics are way over the top.

It was a legitimately terrible and stupid trade. It's broken people's brains and prevented any rational thought.

Nico will be gone very soon and will be laughing it up at his next stop. Why should he care. This is so bad it's closer to a franchise killing move like the Sonics being sold to an Oklahoma business man who promised not to move the team to Oklahoma then to just being the worst trade of all time

When AD inevitably gets hurt I'm going to fear for Nico's safety.

Is there any way this is somehow tied to the decline of Regional Sports Network money and the new owners not being willing to do the super max as it would take them into the red?

Like maybe the organization thought it was better to look stupid than broke? Either way F them just trying to find some type of rationale that isn't an NBA conspiracy.

Have zero real interest in the NBA other then just being a major sports fan. Have no 'local' or family influenced team to root for. Purely a sports watcher. Love watching Luka similarly to how I Love watching Giannis and Joker... As in not at all until the playoffs and they go off.

Mavs fans rightfully hate all of this. For this nothing fan...win the title Mavs. Take AD and turn that **** sandwich into lemonade.

I have watched a lot of professional sports over the years. I don't think I've ever been hurt over a trade or someone changing teams. This is a first. I know, HTFU and all that. But I really think I might be done. I'm not even all that mad. I'm just ambivalent towards this team in the same way I am the cowboys. And at this time last night, I would called myself a super fan. Wow.

I just don't see it. Max deals and supermaxes are just part of operating in this league. The vast majority of teams are in the $170-200mm payroll range. They are going to spend close to the same money regardless. It's not like they've saved meaningful $$$ given AD is highly paid

That't right. 20 of 30 teams are at 170M or more payroll this year. Of the 10 teams below that, only two are good, and that is because extensions kick in next year where they will be over 170.

Other than Wemby, name one player in the entire league that Dallas couldn't have gotten for Luka.
maybe SGA, Jokic, Giannis

SGA is a Mav in a heartbeat. So are Joker and Giannis.

Ant. No disrespect, but bwahaha. Brown, Tatum...in a heartbeat.

I know you've been gut punched and I feel bad for Mavs fans but if you think they'd get SGA "in a heartbeat" I have to strongly disagree. OKC has been built on defense and switchable wings. Luka is not that in the mold even a little bit. He's a top 5 player but to assume the Thunder would jump at the chance to lose SGA for him is speculative at best. And silly at worst.

Sure it's speculative. But it's also speculative that OKC can win in the playoffs. SGA is a perennial all-star, future hall-of-famer, and dominant force. He reminds me of Steve Nash when he goes where he wants, Chris Paul with his mid-range game (or old school Ro Blackman), and the shot-making of Kyrie, with some of the old Jason Kidd speed. But he's still a 26 YO PG.

Same. I'm 50. Lifetime hardcore Dallas sports fan. While I may have disagreed with some trades, I've always seen the logic. I just fail to see this one in any capacity. This is a gut punch to every Mavs fan. The new ownership let some closet homosexual GM who has been in the game for 3 years get carried away in his own ridiculous process and hubris

It wasn't ability to pay. Nico just really didn't want to pay Luka.

He better know what he is doing. He needs to be correct in two ways: Luka never takes conditioning seriously and can never get over the hump, and free agents better want to come here with all the money that will be available in a few years.

I've tried every mental gymnastic possible and I can't think of single rationalization for this 24 hours later. I've listened to a dozen pods, been down reddit theory threads, talked to fellow Dallas buddies, etc. I got nothing. And, if another big shoe is to drop like us getting jimmy or someone else, I still am adamantly against this trade.

Also, where does this leave Kyrie?

The new ownership are not basketball folks at all. And it's clear Nico consulted no one because he didn't want a rumor to get out. He's actually ****ed them over and I think they are realizing it today. I'm sure he got "approval", but he's a slick guy and I'm sure won enough of their trust not to kill the deal

Kyrie has all the juice in the world now to get his max contact. Dallas can't say no.

I do think a Ky/AD two man game will be super elite.

From the 1310 thread

Bob summed this up pretty well
Quote:
The Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a trade that is so lopsided and out of left field that you cannot even believe it is real. It feels like the NBA allowed the Lakers to write up a deal and submit it without the Mavericks having any say in the matter.

I wanna see our defense pissed off, not confused, maybe a little murder in their hearts Reload12, 11/4/11

This is what I've been leaning towards. LeBron basically runs the NBA. While LeBron doesn't get everything he wants he has more say so than any-one individual in the NBA.

Luka trade is so bizarre that I honestly would believe the NBA orchestrated this to MLGA (Make Lakers Great Again).

Consensus seems to be worst NBA trade ever. Maybe the Dallas GM got some substantial cash deposited in a numbered Swiss bank account. Should have his financial records subpoenaed.

Only first that is worth anything is Charlotte's pick this year. And it will likely be towards the middle of the lottery in a draft that falls off a cliff after the first few.

They also didn't get a top 10 player…

Yeah, but they traded away Fox, not Luka. Apples and steak.

The Charlotte pick is lottery protected and becomes two seconds after this season

I hate that this is the most likely reality. It's so bizarre that it simply has to be something bigger. And bigger in this case ****s on the fans in order to feed further greed.

This is how I feel. I'm not sure I'll even be that happy about a title if they somehow miraculously won one with AD. Definitely not as happy as I would be seeing Luka lift it.

Nico would have traded Jordan for Sam Bowie in 1989. 5+ years in the league and couldn't even figure out how to get to the Finals. Giving him a big contract would be stupid. Right?

Meh seems far fetched that a bunch of reps in Austin would care even if the team was good.

Threaten to move a terrible team and everyone would just shrug their shoulders.

I don't think it's a grand gambling conspiracy. I think it's an ownership group that doesn't know basketball, doesn't have winning championships as a priority, and therefore put the basketball side of franchise completely in the hands of a guy who has been in the league for all of 3 years. A guy who got lost in analytics, angry about Luka's weight, and gradually talked himself into doing an insane deal while consulting only his buttbuddy who was going to be primary beneficiary of said deal

It would have an impact on the Dallas economy.

It's hard not to think about theories like that when the trade was THAT bad and on top of that they didn't even try to get the best deal possible.

I know nothing about this kind of thing. You'd think the NBA would be against such blatant tanking (if true) but I guess if it benefits the Lakers…
