As for Teodo, I'm trying to think of who we're talking about that had the 1.98 ERA with 19 saves. I know it wasn't him since he was a starter all season, but who else would that be?

No one on Frisco's roster had more than 8 saves last year.

Teodo had a 1.98 ERA. Pitched in 20 games, starting 19.

believe it was probably a mis-read of the stats. 19 of 20 saves instead of the actual 19 starts in 20 appearances.

Anyone heard anything on when deGrom is supposed to take the mound?

I believe he's throwing his first live BP today and starts Friday. I also think Wyatt is scheduled to start early this week, he made his injury sound extremely minor but we will see here soon how minimal it really is.

99% sure I heard it reported that he has been throwing (back fields & bullpens) but that this week will be his first live game action. He hasn't been injured or held back that I've heard. I absolutely could be wrong.

Jamey Newberg pointed out that if everyone stays on their regular schedule, DeGrom's first game on Friday puts him in line to start Opening Day.

I think the Rangers are really going to treat deGrom, Seager and Jung almost with kid gloves this year. Not saying they won't play a lot of ball, but I think their goal is to keep the three of them as healthy as humanly possible, so more off days and lots of rotations.

I understand what you're saying but how more cautious could they be with a SP that is paid to be a #1, and Seager already has a ton of built in rest days...and still gets hurt.

Maybe they should try playing more, and they wouldn't get hurt so often.

I hear ya, and part of me wants them to say "f it, throw him till his arm falls off" but the fact of the matter is that the rangers HAVE to get innings out of him on that contract. They have to find a way to get 100 innings from him. They're paying him 40 freaking million dollars.

Kinda like that. I believe that'll help gradually ramp up. Get the feeling around the all star break he will be skipped for a few as well.

Looks like Doli is getting an mri due to oblique discomfort. Probably going to set him back a few weeks id imagine. This may open the door for Osuna or Harris. Also makes a Leody trade much more unlikely.

Put Josh Smith in RF, his defense is good enough and his bat is better than Duran/Osuna/Pillar, etc.
Flounder Dorfman

If he's not ready for opening day, I would assume it's Carter in RF.
Slided bread

Ya, the reasonable move is Carter to RF and Leody in CF but watching Leody take more ABs is just a beating.
Tksymm7

He's got to get back to playing plus defense and hitting for more power. I don't care if he bats .225 as long as he's playing a great CF and when he does hit the ball, he's doing something with it.

Seems this club may be looking at Teodo as a potential closer or late innings option. He's pitch 3.1 inning this spring (all 9th inning), striking out 5 and has 0 earned runs. May just be short term, till a spot opens in the rotation but he definitely has the stuff to be a dominant closer.

I've been singing Teodo for a long time. Only closer candidate with closer stuff

Did we talk about how Adolis was cleared of bad news on the oblique?

Less than a grade 1 strain and he's expected to be available for opening day.

Yep good news there and Wyatt should be making his spring debut tomorrow or Friday.

Rangers with a Split Squad game today.

Opening Day is 3 weeks from today. I think I'd expect the NRIs to be reduced after this weekend. Time to start making some tough decisions.

Had some good showings.

Another strong outing for Leiter today. 3 IP, 3K, 0 BB, 0 ER

Garcia taking the mound now

I saw a really interesting stat about Leiter the other day that has me believing he's going to find a niche in the pen. I can't tell you specific stats, but it was something along the lines of when Leiter's fastball dips below 98, the hitting stats all go up something like 3x and guys absolutely t off on him, but when his fastball is 98+, guys hit like .150 against him and his K/9 are astronomical.

Jeff Wilson reported (stated) before today even that Leiter had made the opening day roster. He's been good this ST.

Also read that Leiter has been using a new/different changeup, and that it's playing really well. Hope he figures it out and makes the team, some home grown pitching would be nice.

Festa taught him a pitch called the "kick change" last Fall. Leiter says it is the 1st offspeed that he has felt good command and moves the way he has wanted.

Could be a good sign.

Supposedly it is growing in popularity in the league.

So often, these college guys with ++ heaters never develop but one other pitch since - that's all they need. My son got all the way through high school with two pitches. He was left handed, though.

MLB hitters need to be kept off balance in order to succeed. A starting pitcher nowadays needs at least 3, preferably 4, really good pitches in order to get through the order three times. As Dizzy Dean said: "Hitting is all about timing and pitching is all about ****ing up their timing."

2024 Season Recap
  • Disappointing Finish: The Rangers went 78-84, finishing third in the AL West, a stark contrast from their 2023 World Series-winning campaign.
  • Struggled Against Good Teams: They performed poorly against teams over .500.
  • Injuries Played a Major Role: Key players like Evan Carter, Josh Jung, Corey Seager, and several pitchers missed significant time, affecting consistency.
  • Underwhelming Stats: Ranked 23rd in OPS, 21st in starting pitching ERA, and their bullpen was even worse.
Offseason Additions
  • Joc Pederson (DH/OF): Two-year, $37 million deal, known for crushing right-handed pitching.
  • Kyle Higashioka (C): Solid offensive catcher, signed for two years at $13.5 million.
  • Bullpen Reinforcements: Chris Martin, Hoby Milner, Luke Jackson, Sean Armstrong, and Jacob Webb all signed one-year deals.
  • Jake Burger (1B/3B): Acquired via trade; hit 29 home runs last season.
  • Nathan Eovaldi (SP): Re-signed, providing stability to the rotation.
  • Minor League Depth: Several veterans signed, including Kevin Pillar, Nick Ahmed, and Jesse Chavez.
Notable Departures
  • Bullpen Losses: Kirby Yates (had a great 2024) and Jos Leclerc (inconsistent but experienced).
  • Rotation Hits: Max Scherzer (only made 9 starts in 2024) and Andrew Heaney (160 innings) are gone.
  • Other Contributors Gone: Nathaniel Lowe, Grant Anderson, and Carson Kelly.
2025 Season Outlook
Strengths
  • Potentially Elite Lineup:
    • Marcus Semien (2B) and Corey Seager (SS) form one of the best middle infield duos.
    • Wyatt Langford, Adolis Garca, and Evan Carter provide power and versatility.
    • Jake Burger and Josh Jung add depth.
    • Joc Pederson strengthens the lineup against right-handers.
    • If healthy, this could be one of the best lineups in baseball.
  • Starting Rotation Potential:
    • Jacob deGrom: If healthy, could be a game-changer.
    • Nathan Eovaldi: Consistent and reliable.
    • John Gray, Tyler Mahle, Cody Bradford, and Dane Dunning: Solid depth options.
    • Top Prospects Waiting: Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter could make an impact.
Concerns
  • Rotation and Bullpen Uncertainty:
    • Heavy reliance on Jacob deGrom, who has struggled with injuries.
    • Jack Leiter has yet to live up to expectations.
    • Bullpen additions are mostly low-cost, solid veterans, but lack a clear dominant closer.
    • The team lost some key bullpen arms but didn't make major upgrades.
  • Health is the X-Factor:
    • Injuries derailed 2024, and a similar pattern in 2025 could be problematic.
Final Thoughts
  • Ceiling: If healthy, this team could be the best in the AL.
  • Floor: Injuries or underperformance could keep them stuck in the middle of the pack.
  • X-Factor: The lineup staying healthy and producing at a high level, while at least one or two bullpen arms emerge as reliable late-game options.
Overall, the Rangers have a high-upside roster with World Series potential, but they need their offense to lead the way while their pitching holds steady. Their ability to stay healthy and get solid bullpen contributions will likely determine how far they go.

Perhaps the 3rd best news of the days, behind the Miko trade and Wyatt extension, Jim Knox is back with the Rangers!
